Democratic candidate for Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe is proving that once government officials learn they can use a crisis to deny basic freedoms, they’ll find a crisis every time.

McAuliffe has decided that Virginia has a public health crisis when it comes to criminal violence. For him and the rest of Virginia’s gun control politicians, there’s never a problem with rising crime, lack of police resources or willingness to actually prosecute criminals. McAuliffe is proving that gun control politicians know only one cure. Take the blue pill of more gun control.

With less than a month to go before Old Dominion voters head into the voting booth, McAuliffe conflates crime with public health, co-opting the use of emergency health measures to enact radical gun control. That includes McAuliffe’s demand that modern sporting rifle (MSRs) and standard capacity magazines must be banned.

“It’s time to Ban the Sale of Assault Weapons, Close Loopholes, and Treat Gun Violence as a Public Health Epidemic,” reads McAuliffe’s campaign website.

Overseeing this, of course, would be McAuliffe’s “Virginia Office of Gun Violence Prevention,” a comfortable taxpayer-funded cushion for McAuliffe’s gun control backers to gin up new ways to deny Virginians their God-given rights protected not only by the U.S. Constitution, but the Commonwealth’s constitution.

Order it Twice

McAuliffe’s “plan” reads like an a la carte gun control menu. In addition to banning MSRs and magazines, he wants to “strengthen” Virginia’s background checks, without explaining what’s left to strengthen since the state already has a universal background check law.

He makes a similar demand of wanting a new law where one already exists by demanding local municipalities should be able to create their own gun control measures. Virginia already did that when it repealed the state pre-emption law.

He would also ban so-called “ghost guns,” or home-built firearms. Never mind that it has been legal in Virginia since it was a colony to make your own firearm.

What he’s really aiming to do is regulate the sale of precursor parts. That would mean nearly any part of a firearm could be labeled a “firearm,” itself requiring background checks and onerous restrictions and regulations on small business owners and gun owners just to repair or improve a firearm.  It doesn’t matter that an individual prohibited from legally purchasing a firearm is also prohibited from possessing one – even one that is self-assembled.

A Crisis Over Governing

McAuliffe’s gun control plan doesn’t sound like much of a plan. It’s an excuse to infringe on Virginians’ constitutionally protected gun rights of those who obey the law and ignores failing policies that defunded police and let criminals run rampant with no accountability.

McAuliffe continues to demonize the MSR, or AR-15 rifle, using the gun control invented trope “assault weapon” to describe these popular, commonly owned rifles. It doesn’t matter to him that the just released FBI Uniform Crime Report show murder skyrocketing 29 percent in the United States.

It also showed that knives were used 3.5 times as often in murders than rifles of all types. Virginia State Police reported that murder in the state reached the highest levels seen since the 1990s. Police reported 537 homicides in 2020, up from 455 in 2019, an 18 percent increase in just one year.

McAuliffe’s gun control crisis plan also masks the failing policies that are contributing to Virgina’s crime problem. Richmond’s progressive, Democratic-controlled city council slashed $3 million from the police budget, eliminated 12 positions at the same time murders in the capital city jumped 40 percent over a year ago.

McAuliffe’s answer isn’t to end the insanity of yanking police off the streets. He wants to double down. McAuliffe accepted the endorsement of a group that support police defunding. He dressed down a room full of law enforcement for questing his position and willingness to accept endorsements from groups that demand police be defunded and prisons be abolished. “I don’t care what you believe,” McAuliffe said.

When candidates for office put on blinders and declare God-given rights are secondary to self-declared “crises,” voters have to scratch their heads and wonder why the proposed cure doesn’t even address the symptoms. McAuliffe’s blue pill of gun control only serves his radical gun control agenda.

    • “Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be “cured” against one’s will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.”

      ― C.S. Lewis,

  1. Were he truly concerned, he’d ban fists and feet, and cutting devices as both kill more people by far. Sticks and hammers too!

    • He’d LOVE to – like the rest of the Democrats. But they realize banning those would expose the entire agenda. Most people with half a brain would think, “what’s next? Baseball bats? Shovels?

They’d love to ban them all, but the optics are just too obvious.

  2. And ya know, there are STILL people who believe he’s trying to do it for the “Common good”!! We have a crisis alright….massive terminal stupidity!

  3. “Declare a Public Health Emergency to Ban ‘Assault Weapons’”

that’s a Biden tactic. He wanted to do that federally until he found out he couldn’t.

  4. heck, that wouldnt pass muster with the *state* supreme court….

not that he has much chance of winning, barring massive fraud.

    • Actually, although the Republican candidate is surging (and leading), the race is still pretty tight. Now the Democrats are trying to change the voting laws so that they can get away with stuffing the ballot boxes.

    • Jimmy Beam,

I have been telling people for well over a decade that a spree killer could easily murder a dozen or more people in one location with a modern compound bow and arrows with broadheads.

There are two keys which guarantee the success of such an attack:

      — Each arrow would probably deliver fatal wounds to three people if the bow had a draw weight of at least 60 pounds. At such a draw weight, an arrow with a broadhead will zip right through one person, barely slowing down at all, if it doesn’t hit any bones. And it should have enough retained velocity to go through a second person and embed in a third person (imparting a fatal wound).

      — The compound bow is effectively silent, far quieter than any firearm with a silencer, and no one would have any idea that an attack was happening until it was too late. No one would react at all to the first arrow (which likely kills three people) since they cannot possibly hear it. Three people would simply fall over and anyone around them might not even be puzzled initially. Then, about five seconds later, the second arrow takes three more people down. Again, no one can hear it and anyone who now sees six people laying down will be wondering why so many people are laying down. And, about five seconds later, arrow number three flies in taking out three more people. At that point, the crowd would probably realize that something bad was happening and start to scatter/run. Finally, that fourth arrow would likely take out another three people as they start to move.

There are countless ways for spree-killers to kill several people at one event–and be able to conduct multiple events–before capture. Attempts to eliminate the availability of the items/tools that a spree killer would use are a fools errand.

      • “Gun violence” must be controlled. We should try a law…..How about God’s “Thou Shalt Not Kill.” Ooops, tried that, didn’t work.
How about man’s Murder 1; Murder 2; Manslaughter. There that will do it. Ooops, those didn’t work.
Let’s try 22,000+ laws against the “….shall not be infringed.” of The Second Amendment, and punish good citizens that have done nothing wrong. There, that will surely do it. Ooops, didn’t.
Well, maybe just one more law from “take them all if I could” FineStain, “Never worked a day in my life” Bolshevik Bernie, Ole Creepy, Sleepy, Senile, Crazy, Fire Two Blasts In The Air Joey, et el, et el..
Ooops, that ain’t gonna do it either…..because that is not the agenda.
A politician with a law never stops a bad guy with a gun.
He only controls the good guys….which is his true agenda. Making good people helpless does not make bad people…..or politicians……harmless.

“Killing is a matter of will, not weapons.
You cannot control the act itself
by passing laws about the means employed.”
The late Col Jeff Cooper, 1958
Handgun expert and founder of Gunsite Academy

The bodies in a local WalMart or grocery store or school or church……the bad guy with a gun…..or the gang member with a gun…. the mentally deficient guy with a gun……or the terribly distraught family member of a gun shooting victim…… or a gun violence survivor……or the Feelz-Gooder Social Do-Gooder….. or the the “hair-on-fire, we’re-all-gonna-die” contingent……or the skin color only voter…..are the politician’s easily manipulated Useful Idiot Tools to achieve his power and control agenda.
The new agenda for humanity requires that no one will have the capacity to fight back. It has been said: “Our Task of creating a Socialist America can only succeed when those who would resist us have been totally disarmed.” No other explanation is possible.
History has repeatedly demonstrated that disarming good people in the name of making bad people harmless only eventually facilitates politicians shooting their own countrymen. History…learn from it or be doomed to relive it….or die from it.
And there it is, boys and girls, the McAuliffe/BlackFace/Xiden/KamelHo/Pigloosi/Slummer/FineStain “Common Sense” Gun Violence Prevention Plan in a nut shell. It’s all about protecting Libtard/Socialist anti-America tyrannical politicians’ asses, for what they have and intend to do to America, from American Patriots with AR-15s and “high capacity” magazines, saying “ENOUGH!!! NO MORE!!!

      • not if your a Ruskian, it just gets stuck in your back. I seen that happen on Red Dawn1 movie.
And then theres the people who wear silk.

    • Impossible! Haven’t you heard? For it to kill anyone it needed to have a 30 round magazine.

  5. “McAuliffe’s answer isn’t to end the insanity of yanking police off the streets. He wants to double down.”

Remember these three rules when dealing with Leftists:
    (1) Leftists always lie;
    (2) Leftists always project;
    (3) Leftists always, always double-down.

  6. This is just the latest in a very long and storied pattern of various government entities attempting to infringe on our inalienable right to keep and bear arms.

And yet the National Shooting Sports Foundation keeps trying to cozy up to various government entities–even supporting government efforts to “strengthen” background check laws and the like–in spite of seeing how frequently government entities act against us.

It almost sounds like battered-wife syndrome.

  7. Well if he thinks its going to be that simple he is in for one rude awakening. First he will see multiple lawsuits and second anyone going to people’s homes to collect guns can expect to be shot. That’s why there should be a law that makes it mandatory for the people who make these rules or laws to accompany law enforcement to the residences where they are going to pick up someones firearms and then they have to be the ones to knock on the door and announce why they are there. There won’t be many of them left to make the rules any longer.

  8. The smartest people in the room say don’t vote. They say republicans and democrats are all the same. So having Andrew Gillum as Florida governor would be just like having Ron DeSantis as governor. They are both the same. Just like the fake Hispanic and the current Texas Governor. They are both the same correct??

Why It’s OK Not To Vote – Katherine Mangu-Ward video 1 hr long

      • There are atheist gun owners on TTAG who are praying to Jesus, that I don’t repost their comments supporting not voting in the 2020 election.

    • I’m gonna pass on your stupid video and will vote even though it is statistically insignificant because it is my freedom to do so. Further, I will challenge idiots who voted for Biden and support those who voted for Trump and other conservatives (and I opposed Trump when he supported gun control). I will oppose mail in ballots which are a prime venue for fraud, and will donate to the FPC and other gun rights groups even though my hundreds and thousands of dollars are statistically insignificant.

Why? Because I am a gun rights advocate and pursuing freedom brings me joy. Also, I’m not a fan of lazy asses who complain and do nothing.

  9. “The government you elect is the government you deserve.”

    ― Thomas Jefferson

And if the people of Virginia elect McAuliffe again, they will get what they deserve, good and hard. BOHICA, Virginians.

    • Bloomberg has ensured that Virginians haven’t been permitted to elect their own officials in over a decade. Their officials are selected for them by Bloomberg, et al, and the “election” is handled by leftist transplants who escaped NY, NJ, MD, and DC because they didn’t like the high taxes and crime, yet are openly hostile to the culture and laws of Virginia…

If the D is gifted another term running the Commonwealth, it will be a result of a hostile, occupying population inflicting themselves, yet again, on Virginia, not because Virginians can’t figure out who to vote for.

    • Ralph, you are correct that Virginians will get what they vote for. Sadly, the Virginia Patriots will be along for the ride merely because the Government Plantation Dwelling Useful Idiots outnumber Patriots today. Votes bought and paid for with Productive Citizen We The Little Peeps’ money. Politicians see We The Little Peeps money as theirs to skim, scam, squander, and with which to enslave the Useful Idiots on the Government Plantation, buying their votes with free shit bought with We The Little Peeps money. And, they will continue to do it because they do not fear We The Little Peeps. No longer matters who votes, only who counts the votes.

Our Founding Fathers would already have been finished shooting a second time.

  10. I would be making sure the sheriffs who say they will deputize, you so you can keep your 2A rights get reelected.

    • What they say and what they do are two different things.
I couldn’t lie to get elected, hence I’ll never be an elected official.
A well informed voter,,, would any politician volunteer for a Vulcan mind meld? Oh Hell No.

  11. “How many voters hate gunms?”
    Uh, not that many anymore.
” I’m all for the right to bear arms.”
    ,,,,,,,,,,,
    “How many voters hate gunms?”
    A bunch.
” I’m going to ban firearmsnms.”
    Sir you just flipped.
“I dont care, whatever it takes, I wanna be elected. “

  12. “Virginia Office of Gun Violence Prevention”

This sounds like the social worker approach. They’re saying the government should step in and do the job of the parents and family. Why aren’t they looking into the root cause, which is the breakdown of the family, instead of a band-aid approach? It’s almost like they aren’t interested in solving the problem. It isn’t that difficult. The first step to solving any problem is properly identifying it first.

  13. He actually does have a Public Health Emergency but it’s not firearms but the kinder gentler method of dealing with criminals championed by Democrats. A pat on the head and telling them”It’s OK sweetheart, we know your mother made you do it” does not encourage a criminal to stop the criminal activity! It’s the Democrat agenda that’s fueling the crime wave!

  14. Murder is already illegal. Assault with a deadly weapon is already illegal. As are other violent crimes. Why do the anti gun crowd seem to think those who would commit such crimes would pay any more attention to some ban on whatever hardware? One would think even the Democrats would catch on that it’s not the tool, but the person behind it. And, honestly, when has any prohibition of anything ever worked in the US. How’s that prohibition on narcotics like Meth or Cocaine or Heroine working out? Considering those are the greatest contributors to crime since alcohol was allowed back on the market.
Perhaps if the idiots would look at the very numbers they claim favors their agenda, instead of lying about them, the fools would realize violent crime was on a downward trend until the very same Democrat Party stopped prosecuting criminals and allowing violent thugs out of jail/prison. Go after those who commit the crimes and leave those who actually obey the law alone.

  15. If you are a gun owner who wore the mask or took the shot when you were told, congratulations.

YOU are the problem. YOUR compliance is why people like McAuliffe are convinced this will work.

  16. McCauliffe was a Clinton thug, his hit man for all Bill’s enemies. He made his money trading on an illegal inside trading tip.

  17. All I can say is that if Virginians vote him in, they get what they voted for. If he and the democrats cheat, which I’m sure they will try, then they need to arrest him and not let the farce continue.

  18. The corrupt McAuliffe wants another turn at the feeding trough and may well get it being VA has a large DC government bureaucrat population. His call for a ban on assault weapons (i.e. any semiautomatic rifle) is a sure winner with that crowd regardless the facts that knives and other edged weapons take three times more lives than rifles of all types combined. The same for hands and feet though the difference is less dramatic per FBI statistics.

  19. As I’m not a resident of VA, there’s not a whole awful lot I can do about it. Every Gun Advocacy Group has their hand out again. As a retiree on a fixed budget, I don’t have deep pockets, and inflation has already eaten up the little I could donate.
“Write or Call your Senator” is a joke in my state, as Bennett and Lickshispooper (Hickenlooper) are very Anti-Gun. Write them and your reply is a form letter Lying and extolling what a grand idea this anti-gun Law is.
    Rural Coloradoans have no voice.

  20. Terry McAuliffe is certainly having a mental crises when he cannot think through the crime and weapons problem in his State. He certainly has a problem determining the cause/ causes of a problem and arriving at a solution. Because the baby cries when ever it is given a bath his solution to stop the crying would be to thrrow the baby away with the bath water and soap.

  21. Their goal is to ban all firearms. Once they ban the so called “assault rifles”, they will see that it had no effect on crime. At that point they will proclaim “It’s handguns! We must ban handguns!” Then their agenda will be accomplished, i.e., the banning of all firearms.
