Canada Moving Toward Less Gun Regulation While the US…

3

Sure, it can be easy to poke some good-natured fun at our neighbors to the north occasionally. Yes, they have some unusual culinary traditions. Their football fields are funny looking. And they’re not always as nice as everyone would have you believe. But when looking at Canada and the US, what we have here are two countries moving in opposite directions. At least in terms of federal gun control policy…

Gear Preview: Insight WL1-AA Weapon Light

7

At SHOT this past January, Insight Technologies rolled out a new set of weapon lights – the WL1-AA weapon mounted tactical light. With a brightness of 150Lumens and an “on” time of 90 minutes, you might just walk right by. . .  There was no fanfare, no parade, just the humble presentation of a low profile weapon light and its sister variant which sports a laser for aim assistance. No big deal right? Been there, done that? Well, not exactly. . . This little guy’s different – and guess what? It’s for anyone.

TTAG at AAC: Wheels up in D.C.

8

Another wonderful morning in our nation’s capitol. It’s about 6:20, and I’m about to hop a plane to Atlanta to meet up with the guys and gals behind AAC. I kinda feel like Charlie outside the gates to the Wonka factory, a sort of excited anticipation. I just hope I don’t run into the same kind of snags that almost cancelled my trip to NDIA a few weeks back. If you guys thought of any questions for AAC now is the time to speak up.

What Could Possibly Go Wrong: Shopaholic Edition

14

Presented for your consideration…possibly the world’s most dangerous bag. In case you can’t read the fine print, the bag was a promotional piece at a bookstore in Belgium, given out to promote Belgium’s most famous crime writer. (And not, it’s not Hercule Poirot. He’s a crime-solving detective, and a fictional one at that. But thanks for playing.) I can just imagine the looks you’d get if they tried this in, oh, say NYC or California. (Of course, in Texas, everybody’d want one.) So – brilliant promotional item, or accident waiting for a place to happen: your thoughts?

Canton, OH Cop Daniel Harless Abuses CCW License Holder

59

A few weeks back, we highlighted the courteous and professional conduct of officer Matt Lyons. Well, for each yin there’s a yang. For every good there’s a bad. For every Jedi there’s…some guy wearing black on the dark side. Now, via snowflakesinhell.com, comes this surefire first ballot hall-of-famer from Canton, Ohio. Granted, the Lyons and Canton situations occurred under drastically different circumstances. This sorry display happened at night in an evidently questionable part of town. Still, it’s hard to decide what’s most disturbing about the dashcam video . . .

ATF Death Watch 42: Where Did They Get Those Wonderful Toys?

20

Okay, so we’ve established that, contrary to what the ATF, the Mexican and American governments and the mainstream media would have us believe, there is no “River of Guns” flowing from gun shows and legit gun dealers in the U.S. to Mexico. Furthermore, we’ve noted that most of the weapons the cartels do have came from “official” sources, such as government agencies, corrupt law enforcement officials and the like. This was confirmed, in a weird way, by the head of the Los Zetas drug cartel, who insists that he bought his weapons legally, in the United States . . .

Self-Defense Tip: Make Your 911 Calls Short and Sweet

9

“He’s mad; he’s got the gun,” she whispered. “I don’t want anybody here.” The mixed messages to a 911 operator hailed from the wife of Ohio state Sen. Kris Jordan [via dispatchpolitics.com]. She was having a bit or what the Brits call “argy-bargy” with her better half. Or his better half. In any case, a politician who can’t smooth over a domestic disturbance would never have become a politician in the first place. “I love my husband,” Mr. J said after a symbolic good night’s sleep. “We had a disagreement. We have talked through it, and we’re both committed to each other, and we’re working on strengthening our relationship even more.” Well good for them! And lucky for the Js the cops didn’t come in all guns blazing. Of course, it it had been you or me . . .

Plastic AR-15 Magazine Torture Test Preview

36

After purchasing your first AR-15 the very next thing on your shopping list is usually a bushel of magazines, and the hottest thing on that market are plastic magazines. On the face they seem solid enough for a day at the range, but what about competition shooting and duty use? Is a plastic magazine rugged enough to survive the abuse that those magazines see? And which magazine is the best? We had questions, and so we decided to get our hands on the top six plastic magazines (by informal survey) and put them to the test. Here’s the details…

Calling Foghorn: Deconstruct Cop Gun Death Stat STAT

12

Stats can kill. Rational analysis. Whenever you see a stat-based MSM story, you can bet that someone somewhere is trying to “sell” a particular point of view. For example, this from officer.com: “Police officer deaths, including those fatally shot in the line of duty, are on pace to rise for the second straight year, despite a sustained decline in violent crime across the country. Overall officer deaths are up 14% so far in 2011, while deadly shootings have increased by 33%, according to a midyear report by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF), which tracks law enforcement fatalities.” What’s wrong with/missing from this picture . . .

Question of the Day: Do You Skimp On Ammo?

35

The price of “proper” self-defense ammo (e.g. Hornady Critical Defense, Wilson Combat) galls me. But only because I’d like to practice with it. So I shoot (and shoot and shoot) whatever I can scrounge from manufacturers. Either that or I buy Blazer (I have way too much going on in my house to reload) or Winchester White Box or whatever else is relatively inexpensive. But not cheap. Check out the pic above. According to our friend at thefirearmblog.com, the busted Bushmaster ACR is down to the fact that . . .

UK: Accidental Handgun Thief Jailed for Five Years

10

“A thief from Moray who ‘unwittingly’ stole a gun from the house of a widow has been jailed for five years,” bbc.co.uk reports, brandishing air quotes with gay abandon. “Guy Whitelaw, 28, from Forres, told police he discovered the handgun in a cash box he took from the house. Whitelaw admitted having the gun and was given minimum jail term for illegal possession of a firearm. He told the court the victim, a 63-year-old woman who said the gun had belonged to her late husband, should be prosecuted for not having a permit.” And I bet she will be, too. “Judge Lord Woolman told him there were no exceptional circumstances to allow him to escape the minimum jail term of five years for illegal possession of a firearm.”
