Earlier this month, a Phoenix police officer fired a shot that took down a man with a gun who was holding a baby hostage. The incident began on the afternoon of January 9th in Phoenix. 911 callers reported a man fighting with a woman and running around a hotel with a gun. Video taken from a hotel’s surveillance system shows a male savagely beating a woman in a parking lot then grabbing a small toddler from her.
A second caller, apparently the mother, provided more information to a 911 dispatcher.
“Van Buren. Hurry up! Van Buren and 7th Avenue. My husband just took my baby. He has a gun. He’s loaded. He took the baby. He’s trying to kill him,” the woman shouted to the 911 call taker. Then you hear gunshots in the background. “He’s shooting!” she continued. “He fired!”
You can hear the fear in the woman’s voice.
The first Phoenix PD car rolled up on scene in about one minute, an impressively prompt response. The man who took the baby hostage was in the middle of the street, trying to carjack someone when police arrived and interrupted that attempted felony.
From about forty feet away, officers told the hostage-taker, who had already fired at least one shot, to drop the gun. He didn’t. Instead, he fired another shot. That, ladies and gentlemen, was felony stupid on his part. In the end, it would prove the last shot the hostage-taker fired.
Another unit rolled up and an officer dismounted with a police patrol rifle. When he saw an opportunity, he took the shot. Yes, it was a patrol rifle just like the one nearly twenty million other Americans own.
The offender fell, dropping the baby, but he remained armed. One of the officers ordered the others to “hold it!” However, the officer who took the shot rejected that command.
“No! F*** it. Get the kid! Get the kid!” he shouted as he sprinted towards potential danger to save the baby.

After taking the shot, the officer pick up the crying baby, telling his fellow officers, “I’ve got the kid! I’ve got the kid!” while he runs back to safety. The video continues with the officer trying to comfort the baby, making sure the boy wasn’t seriously injured.
The unnamed officer is a four-year veteran. He deserves both recognition and a commendation for his heroic actions to save the baby from death or great bodily injury.
Good work, officer. Good work.

Very few people are more critical of police conduct than me.
Based on the available information and video, I say that Phoenix police did a stellar job in this case and deserve honor and positive recognition for doing so. This was a great example of how police can be a significant asset to our communities. They showed restraint when they should have and used appropriate force when they should have. Job well done.
And when police do something that is a significant detriment to our communities, I will call them out on it, just as I would ANYONE whose actions damage our communities.

All governmental officials…elected, appointed or hired should be accountable for actions performed under the umbrella of their enumerated / defined duties or position.
The granting of any kind of “immunity” should be only in extreme cases and on a case-by-case basis, ie. a mobster or whistleblower who is a critical witness in a major criminal case.
Totally agree. Guy got there last, stopped the insane guy and ran to protect the kid. I’m betting from his response and his talking to the little guy is that he’s a dad.

Hope the officer is processing what happened appropriately and not blaming himself for putting down a feral bad guy.
Considering how he ran into harm’s way with a suspect still holding a pistol, to get the kid to safety, I’m pretty sure he’s gonna have no trouble sleeping at night.

Kudos to Phoenix PD for their quick response and for effectively ending the threat to the child and the surrounding community. That Officer earned his pay on 9 Jan 2021. Particularly touching was his concern for the child as he tried to comfort and ascertain if the child was injured.
Somewhat surprised that the Democrat thug army (AntiFa / BLM) haven’t tried their division / destroy tactics in response.

I’m curious what scope was he using? I’m looking to get a new one.
Several optics manufacturers make scopes designed for the AR-15 rifle platform for relatively close-range engagements such as this.
I personally like the 1-4x24mm scopes which allow for 1 times magnification (in other words no magnification — just the same size as you see with your naked eye) up to 4 times magnification. I would keep such a scope set to 1x magnification which provides the widest field of view and allows you to easily shoot with both eyes open. That makes it pretty easy to achieve “combat accuracy” out to 100 yards. And if you encountered a situation where you needed more precise shots (such as this hostage situation), then you could dial up to 2x or even 4x magnification if necessary.
I’ve had mine on the 2x setting and when target focused, you see the 2x image outlining the off eye image.
Not dogmatic about this. Just a thought.

7th and Van Buren is a really crappy part of town. It’s also downtown. Quick response from the PD is actually pretty reasonable, it’s a couple blocks from the courthouse, so PD presence should be expected.
