Scott Peterson, the school resource officer who stayed outside Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School as Nikolas Cruz murdered 17 people inside, has been found not guilty of felony child neglect and other related charges.

Former Broward County Deputy Scot Peterson wept as the verdicts were read. The jury had deliberated for 19 hours over four days.
After court adjourned, Peterson, his family and friends rushed into a group hug as they whooped, hollered and cried. One of his supporters chased after lead prosecutor Chris Killoran and said something. Killoran turned and snapped at him, “Way to be a good winner” and slapped him on the shoulder. Members of the prosecution team then nudged Killoran out of the courtroom.
Peterson took cover and stayed outside the building for more than 40 minutes, long after the shooting had stopped and other officers had entered the building.
His defense apparently relied on misdirection, claiming he couldn’t tell where the sound of gunfire was coming from.
Peterson’s attorney, Mark Eiglarsh, during his two-day presentation, called several deputies who arrived during the shooting and students and teachers who testified they did not think the shots were coming from the 1200 building. Peterson, who did not testify, has said that because of echoes, he could not pinpoint the shooter’s location.
Eiglarsh also emphasized the failure of the sheriff’s radio system during the attack, which limited what Peterson heard from arriving deputies.
The prosecutor had this to say . . .
“As parents, we have an expectation that armed school resource officers – who are under contract to be caregivers to our children – will do their jobs when we entrust our children to them and the schools they guard,” Broward State Attorney Harold F. Pryor and the prosecutor’s office said in a statement after the verdict. “They have a special role and responsibilities that exceed the role and responsibilities of a police officer. To those who have tried to make this political, I say: It is not political to expect someone to do their job.”

Most counties in Florida are revolted by “defund the police”, so they’re going to be predisposed to NOT punish a police officer of anything but the most egregious of crimes.

I had no such illusion. For a lot of good reasons our civil criminal codes do not mirror the UCMJ, and there is no such crime as “cowardice before the enemy”. Of course, we all know it when we see it, and Peterson displayed it in spades. The verdict doesn’t mean he isn’t a coward, it merely means that he didn’t break any Florida laws. you have to fall back on your training, I spent 33 yrs as an officer and 27 of those as a Detective. Believe it or not we get a ton of training and a helluva lot of it in Active Shooter training. In some cases the instructors would stack the odds against us where you would be up against shooters who had semi auto rifles and subguns, most of the times we only had our sidearms, in some cases if they could access some 12 Ga simunitions we would have a 12 ga. So a handgun vs a long gun it can work !!!!
Exactly. This is not a charge across an open field. This is exploiting cover, waiting for the shooter to be distracted and taking him out. Not to mention that the typical mass murderer is not tactically trained etc. I know of one mass killing where the mass shooter fumbled with a reload for many seconds, but no one was brave enough to charge.

That’s why neither society in general, nor any commenter here, expects or wants to hold the masses of sheeple to that standard. Instead, we want a free open labor market where people choose their own jobs; where 99.99% of jobs never put people in a situation where the lives of innocent children depend on their courage, and where only the .01% who went out of their way to pursue that unique career path (knowing exactly what it required, and having countless other options) could be held to that standard.
What is incredibly naive is the belief that “school security” means anything in a society where the only standard for a $104K pension (higher than any non-flag / general officer retirement in the military) is processing O2 into CO2 in an SRO uniform, even if you fail to do the one and only task for which you were hired in the exceptionally rare instance it is required.

In both police AND SRO training, both the danger of the job AND the specifics of such things as facing armed criminals are not just discussed and practiced, the are a HUGE part of that training.
Point the first: EVERY cop and SRO is INTIMATELY acquainted with the dangers inherent in the job. ONE of the reasons police and police unions cite for their (frankly, absurd) pensions and benefits is that they are earned by “putting their lives on the line, every day”.
Point the second: Whether a cop, a SRO, or even a non-sworn school guard, are given at least basic training and orientation about “active shooter” being a KNOWN RISK. Peterson got police training, training for his SRO role, and ONE OF THE PIECES OF EVIDENCE in the trial was materials from an ACTIVE SHOOTER TRAINING COURSE Peterson had (supposedly) recently taken. ALL of which you would know, if you weren’t an ignoranus.

Let the lawsuits begin. Preponderance of evidence is a lower standard than beyond a reasonable doubt. If the jury deliberated that long, it was probably well beyond preponderance even if it didn’t quite make the higher threshold.

A lone police officer at a mall in Texas recently did that very thing. Its has happend many times, by armed teachers, other ordinary armed citizens, SRO, and police .. facing and defeating a mentally ill shooter with an AR-15 with the defender only armed with a pistol.

This is disturbing. Being an S.R.O. can be a difficult job. I’ve done it. I didn’t have a golf cart. I wasn’t there, so I won’t pass judgement. However, I will say this. in my time in law enforcement I’ve seen the profession attract those that believe that pinning on a badge and strapping on a duty belt will cure a character flaw. Cowardice. It will not. I’ve seen it a couple of times. It made me ill. There are lots of citizens out there with the same mentality. I’ve got a gun. I’m brave. You should read up on the New Life Church shooting in Colorado Springs. Carl Chinn had only his silly, Keltec P32 and was 100yds from the Bushmaster rifle enthusiast. He moved from support pillar to pillar to try and get into mousegun range. Fortunately, Jeanne Assam had her more credible 9mm and a good angle to wound the shooter enough that he collapsed on the floor and then offed himself. Ideally the security people would have had rifles for themselves, but that tends to scare church people who come to feel peace, love, and fellowship and want to forget the outside world for a little while. My own team is all concealed carry handgun for that same reason. Tactically, that situation really sucks (rifle vs handgun), but you cannot just stand around outside. Every shot is the sound of one of your friends dying.

I agree that 100yds is too long for any handgun, so Chinn did the right thing by working his way forward from cover to cover rather than just leaving.
My own team trains to the the FBI qual standard which includes eight of the sixty shots to be made from 25yds. I practice at least twice a month, but 9mm or higher. Chinn gave his .32 to his wife and has since upgraded. 9mm is the smallest we’re allowed to carry and I opt for the smaller framed versions of this. Our church doesn’t have 100yd hallways though.

Long ago I would, for fun, live fire train with my friend. One went safely behind a Boulder and popped up a “hostage “ vs “felon” cardboard cut out. After some many sessions and hours at this, we stopped ever shooting the hostage. Lag to fire shrank and shrank until say 20 yard shots from muzzle down at long or short random intervals was maybe two seconds. This is only one aspect of situational training but my point was we both vastly improved with training. After a bit, despite trying to pull down the target the moment it was hit, after a bit we could often double tap it. We were using old 1911 or Hi-power.
I realize it’s pointless to reason with “Nick” the mooney, but anyone who has played laser tag or paintball understands how to use cover and opportunity to conquer an opponent. A school shooter isn’t dug in on a hilltop. Even now, I personally feel I would have a good chance to take out an opponent by getting a sight picture before he can react. Indoors offers a lot of robust corners. Not to mention a .223 with plain FMJ has modest penetration – not going to go through a cinderblock wall corner.

During that response, law enforcement used the traditional barricade protocols. The terrible end result was the killers were allowed to continue to kill people while police waited outside.

The decades old “hostage rescue” protocols were developed in the 1970’s to deal with the emerging terrorism threat after the failed 1972 Munich Olympics rescue of Israeli athletes. The goal is the same: stop the killing and save lives.

I’m a retired cop and this man sickens me as apparently he went into the job for pay and benefits and no other reason. We’ve seen a rise in that since the pay started getting better in the 90’s. That said this is not surprising as has been said there is no law obliging a person to protect anyone. That has to come from inside the Officer or he needs to be weeded off the force.
To me, he didn’t his job in the first place. he is going to have a target on his back for the rest of his life. He hope that he can grow a mustache and beard. There are probably a lot if people wishing that he goes to hell.
I’m thinking if it would have been my children in that school I would expedite his journey along with burning the school to the ground.
What I have observed is that devastated people, such as parents in this case, become broken, passive, and never violent. It’s just what I have observed. Violent people become wildly violent when offended / attacked, ordinary people, attacked at this depth, become broken. It’s up to others to fix society.

Richard, what you say is 100% true. People who are broken/devastated by an unthinkably horrible loss such as the MSD shooting will become passive. Some will draw into themselves. Others will turn to religion. And still others will turn to “forgiveness”, partly because that give them a little bit of peace and partly because they don’t know how else to process their loss.
And who can blame them? They have been through something so traumatic that we can’t even imagine it. We humans are NOT made to survive our children. We humans are NOT built to deal with an unjust taking of innocent life such as what happened that horrible day in 2018.
But this is important. The first, second, and third level victims SHOULD be allowed to process their pain in peace. But at the same time, the rest of society needs to have the balls to step up and do the right thing. The murderer SHOULD have gotten the Death Penalty for what he did. The BC Sheriff SHOULD have lost his job within a week. This RSO SHOULD have lost his job too, and probably should never be allowed to hold any official LEO role for the remainder of his life. Sending him to prison is something that no jury is going to just do in a snap decision. He didn’t pull the trigger on those kids.js

A car nearby accelerated just a bit and he took the safety off, body shoved me aside a bit, muzzle stayed low. Took him maybe 2 seconds to evaluate, and stand down, he said nothing, kept scanning. I left him to his work but I realized that here was a guy, a veteran of probably 2 or 3 wars, with full on hyper vigilance. I have no doubt he was effective and would instantly of sacrificed himself for those kids. He probably got $300 a month pension.

Captured Egyptian made. It looked new. He said he got it by asking for it at the armoury, because the AK he took off a dead Syrian had gotten worn out. Back then you could spot Israeli soldiers with a toothbrush on a string and they would brush the star teeth on their AR bolts regularly even just carrying it around due to fear of grit jams. Personally I believe the AR is blown clean in locking area by gas, but I’ve never investigated.
BTW the Valmet has always been my favorite AK. Best finished, best materials, in my opinion.

You are correct. As example, I was In a civilian tourist bus by Masada, my tour group was in two school buses. I switched buses for no reason I can recall, and before I got on I did a walk around to check for devices, then went inside and looked beneath the seats (could see all the way back), then checked the long overhead bins which were made of stainless steel. As people got on I asked them if that was their bag and did it look ok. None of this was my job it’s just that I was then and now vigilant and attacks on tourists were common, and at that time was a UN soldier. After about 4 dirty looks I gave up and sat far back. The first bus left (the one I was supposed to be on) and then we followed maybe 20 minutes later.
Half an hour later or so on the way back was Israeli military swarming and they waved us to go past and there was the first bus with say a 7’ elongated hole blown outward and up with the stainless luggage rack flattened down and bloody tourists on the ground.
The driver was on the gas following orders to get away so when I shouted “stop the bus everybody out!” The driver looked at me puzzled. I shouted again “there might be a bomb in our bus!!”, then he stopped on a dime, no body tried to take their belongings maybe because I shouted “don’t touch anything , get out now”.
After a bit the driver asked everyone exactly what their bags were and then Israeli military got everything off the bus (no EOD gear), and sent us off. When I got back to where I was staying a I talked about what happened (I am fuzzy on what the news said but I think it was five Danes injured, the long rack had deflected the energy up and all the windows being open also helped release pressure), a Palestinian boy interrupted by shouting “VICTORY FOR PALESTINE”, so you get a sense of the situation there.
This outcome was a forgone conclusion. It should be public knowledge as courts have up help that the police have no obligation to protect you. It does however underscore the ridiculous scenario you are put in when being disarmed in a gun free zone when in effect handing your security off to “professionals” who have no obligation to lift a finger for you. The powers that be shouldn’t be able to have it both ways. Either they should be held responsible when security is lapsed and they were the party providing the security or you should have the opportunity to provide it for yourself.
There is always a risk of betrayal when hiring mercenaries. The Great Wall was regularly perforated and crossed by mercenaries, or was allowed to be circumvented with their overt help, or with them just averting their eyes at a proscribed date and time.
The recent mercenary whoooha in Russia is another example. Mercenaries are never guaranteed to be loyal; not even to their own cause! So of course, “professionals” have no obligation to lift a finger for you.
Once you stop paying them, they could decide to come down from the hills, stab you in your sleep, kill your children, enslave your woman, and burn down your city in the dead of night. Just like you never existed in the first place.

Just because a person is a former/current Deputy, Police Officer etc is no guarantee as to how they will react in a high stress situation such as this. Maybe a better choice for the position would have been a tested COMBAT Veteran. Lord knows there too many available and too many looking for work.

Veterans are often left with the psychopathology of “hyper vigilance”, which is a burden in everyday life but makes them very effective in a situation where there is long long nothing followed by a crisis. The only time you feel good is when there’s a crisis, but the ability to assess a threat and act without hesitation is superior.
Having said that I am a strong believer in stress simulation training such as “Red Man” with high intensity (and some injury risk) simulations. Under stress humans act on rote. In this example of school shooting you might use a real school, blue guns for defender but blank firing gun for aggressor, then simulate the situation requiring tbe defender to act immediately and alone, to approach aggressor (yes at risk), and act decisively. We have read how even unarmed defenders won by using distraction such as a jam or outside noise.
Just a reminder to everyone. We actually pay people to run into a burning building. And save the lives of total strangers. Yeah, we actually do that in America.
Someone once asked me why people make a big deal over a fireman or policeman rescuing somebody or taking out the bad guy when they’re only doing their job.
But they are never required to do so if they feel their own lives would be in danger.
They quit when that happens. And I’ve never heard of a fireman refusing to go into a burning building.

I have no problem running to protect a child from harm. Any child, not just my own children and grandchildren. I’m sorry you feel that way about protecting children from harm. Don’t place your hesitation or refusal to protect a child as the lowest common denominator for living in a society in general, or that it’s some virtue to express it in a forum and not expect pushback.
Many individuals have rushed into dangerous situations to protect life. Their example should inspire others to do the same.
Not everyone can take up the mantle of protector. It doesn’t come from a Badge or an Oath. It comes solely from the courage to follow one’s convictions no matter the outcome.
Obviously, this officer’s convictions only went as far as protecting his own life. I pity him, because he’ll have to live with his failure for the rest of his life. What he did, may have been OK under the Law, but it violates the Moral Code of many who hold themselves to a higher standard than society in general.
This trial turned out exactly as I thought it would. He’s not guilty in the eyes of the Law. A jury of his peers reached that determination and verdict under whatever guidelines the Judge instructed the Jurors to follow and guide their verdict.
My personal thoughts and beliefs on this decision/verdict are irrelevant.

As distasteful as the sounds the man should have never been charged with a crime. As shameful as his behavior was it was not criminal and charging him with a crime when there was no law broken was a stretch. If the people want to be able to charge officers for something like this in the future than the legislators need to pass laws that have criminal liability attached to them for an officer failing to act.

When we legislate so heavily that nobody can do right no matter WHAT they do, then certainly nobody is going to step up to do anything. Simple improvements in external security measures, training teachers in proper response to active shooters, secured on-site weapons would go a long way to discouraging most mass shooters. It has been written time and again how mass shooters chose targets based on accessibility. IMO, the best way to address this issue is by having local citizens help decide how they want their children protected. If YOU and your local neighbors want to ignore logic and refuse to make any changes to your schools, so be it. The results of that decisions are then ON YOU. Isn’t that how this works? Set an example, step up, speak publicly, be an adult. If you can.

One failure of the first postulation is that there is such a massive change across age, sex, and race. If guns cause death why are gun deaths so uneven along age, sex, race? For the second point ( reduce death by reducing total guns), we ask how many guns are needed to do all the crime? The answer is far, far below 1% of all the guns. About 134 die per day. So you can see that one would need to lower gun concentration by over 99% to create a meaningful shortage, and of course organized crime would simply meet the demand. Then of course why constrain to guns? The Japanese mass murderer of young women used a Jerry can of gas and some chain. The assumptions do not withstand analysis.

Yet, despite, the car industry being regulated, annually more than 2.5 million people end up in hospital emergency rooms and over 200,000 are hospitalized and around 70,000 children under age 12 are left with a permanent disability due to car accidents. Heck, just for the one crime of DUI more than ~13,000 people annually die as a result of ‘car accident’ due to intoxicated drivers.
So I think you should be willing to give up your car so that people will not have car accidents and DUI criminals will not have access to cars.

And the jury will see where he was hired to do that job and did not do it. there will not be any ‘darn radios’ or ‘didn’t know where the shots were coming from’ to create a reasonable doubt excuse.

civil law suits don’t have “acquittal” or guilty or innocent, there is no ‘beyond reasonable doubt’ thing in civil law suits, there is no burden of proof like there is in a criminal trial. There is either liable or not liable.

And also Nick, you forget that in the criminal trial was for seven counts of neglect of a child, three counts of culpable negligence, one count of perjury. It was not for not doing his job which is a civil matter and not a criminal matter.
The SCOTUS decision that law enforcement has no duty to protect public at large does not apply here. The SCOTUS decision allows that if certain circumstances exist that law enforcement does indeed have a duty to protect. One of those circumstances is if law enforcement is specifically assigned to protect.
Peterson was an armed law enforcement officer assigned special duties and responsibilities as an SRO specifically to protect the children and staff members of that school. That ‘protection’ aspect can be actively engaging to stop, or failing that can be mitigating to stop or repel the threat. Peterson did neither, it was his job to do that and clearly did not do his job.
He is a coward. And I don’t think a jury in a civil law suit would have problems finding that he did not do his job, and I think in their minds the term ‘coward’ is going to be common when they consider that if he had done his job those kids would have at least had a chance if even to escape (by him distracting the killer) even if he was not successful in the end with stopping the mentally ill killer. As it was, because he did not do his job those killed or injured had no chance at all.

Long ago while visiting Switzerland I was talking to a guy who explained how he was in the reserves as most men were. He explained that every serviceman had his uniform, kit, and weapon. I asked him what weapon he had at home , “come see it”. Turns out he was driver so kept a main battle tank in his driveway. I couldn’t go inside because it has a full combat load out. I asked him wtf? His answer was “what use is a tank with no ammo?”. So at any time there’s many many thousands of men with their service rifles at home. Also armed armored vehicles. Switzerland has massive gun ownership.
The verdict didn’t surprise me. Ever since the SCOTUS Decision that LEOs are under No Obligation to Protect, it was obvious the trial would end in a Not Guilty Verdict.
In a perverse way it’s fitting. What should we expect when our (S)Elected Leadership is chock full of Liars, Cheats, Adulterers, Addicts, Drunks and Sexual Deviants on both sides of the aisle, at every level of our government? Our country has largely lost its Moral Compass. Up is Down, Good is Bad, and Bad is Good. A Criminal’s Rights take precedence over their victim’s rights. Men can be women and women can be men. Efforts to decriminalize Heinous Crimes like Pedophelia, and the never ending attempt to raise Sodomy as a virtue and not only normalize it, but give it supremacy. The real Fault for the Parkland Shooting, lies with the School Board, the Sheriff’s Office, the Federal Bureau of Incompetence, and the Cruz family. Nick Cruz raised all the Red Flags of a Mass School Shooter in the making, and the aforementioned organizations and his Family not only ignored his descent into madness, they enabled it.
So not a single SRO has a duty now, none. Now they are worthless. More reason, arm the teachers, arm the parents. Use this at your school board meetings, they drew the line not us.

I cww a long gun while in college. When I was teaching elementary age kids I ccw a pistol. Yes I was breaking the law. And if I needed to defend myself and the students I was ready. Instead of waiting 5 or 10 or 20 minutes for the cops to show up.
