From the AP . . .

A 24-year-old St. Louis man has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a retired police captain who died on a night of violent protests while trying to protect his friend’s pawn shop, the city’s prosecutor announced Sunday

Stephan Cannon was being held without bond on a first-degree murder charge in the death of David Dorn, 77, who was killed Tuesday on the sidewalk outside Lee’s Pawn and Jewelry. Dorn’s last moments were caught on video and apparently posted on Facebook Live, though the video has since been taken down.

Dorn’s death came on a violent night in St. Louis, where four officers were shot, officers were pelted with rocks and fireworks, and 55 businesses were burglarized or damaged, including a convenience store that burned.

The unrest came as cities across the U.S. have seen protests and violence since George Floyd died May 25 after a white Minneapolis officer pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck for several minutes, even after the handcuffed black man stopped moving and pleading for air.

St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner announced the charges.

According to a police probable cause statement, Cannon was among those seen on surveillance footage entering the store and then stealing several televisions, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. Dorn, a friend of the pawn shop’s owner who was in the habit of checking on the business when alarms went off, arrived at the store. Cannon then walked toward the street corner with gun in his hand.

“At the time the shots were fired, (Cannon) was the only person standing at that corner,” the probable cause statement reads. “Multiple plumes of smoke” can be seen coming from where Cannon was standing, and shell casings were found on the spot, police said.

Cannon also faces several other charges including robbery and felon in possession of a firearm.

What a felon with a gun?!?!? He should know better he was only trying to support his babies and saving for law school.

    1. avatar uncommon_sense says:

      Not Larry from Texas,

So, with current policing levels, a violent thug had a firearm and murdered someone. And yet we are supposed to be worried that there will be violent crime if we defund police. What will be different?

      1. avatar Someone says:

Much more of the same troubles?

He was so heart broken over the injustice of a black man being killed by a police officer, he had to shoot an old black man to even the scales of justice?!

      1. avatar MADDMAXX says:

He’s just another product of this damn “Police State” we’ve been living under for the past 185 years or so…. (do I need to add “sarc”)?

        1. avatar TheBSonTTAG says:

Why don’t you go fly to Hawaii and ignore the 14 day quarantine. Better yet have a church service in California at full capacity.

        2. avatar MADDMAXX says:

You mean like the 10s of thousands of dumbass protestors/looters and rioters falling all over one another, including a bunch of fucking liberal mayors and governors, I’m pretty sure that whatever is left of your big bad virus can tell the difference between those nitwits and everyone else just trying to get on with their lives, right?… Oh no, you are addressing the fucked up rules the government tried to dump on everyone, well let me assure you a lot more local governments and police agencies ignored those bullshit policies than defended/enforced them (funny you should use two “deep blue” states as an example), you only hear about the bad shit because the MSM won’t cover anything else… So I guess we can count you among the ignorant who do not understand what a real “police state” is.. That’s okay you can show your stupidity anonymously, no one really cares… Wow I just realized you REALLY ARE the BS on TTAG… How cool is that?

        3. avatar TheBSonTTAG says:

You must not pay any attention to the news or something. Most of law enforcement was more than on board with all of this stupidity. Do you actually have an arguement or you just like to spew nonsense? This was a catastrophic failure of the system on many levels. Simply pointing this out apparently enrages you. Your name fits, you are mad.

  2. avatar Viejo Torro says:

Sadly justice is no longer a possibility in St.Louis (and many other cities)

  3. avatar Dyspeptic Gunsmith says:

He fits the description of those white “boog bois” we’ve been hearing about to a “T.”

    1. avatar TheBSonTTAG says:

Just ask Chief Censor, he is a black caucasian. There are no more races anymore, Hispanics are caucasians and so on. Sure he will be along soon to straighten us all out.

Is the DEATH PENALTY a thing in St. Louis?!? Asking for a friend…

    1. avatar 16V says:

Good luck. That Kim (not qualified to even be a gardener) *charged* him, is amazing. Let alone “held without bail”. She’s been letting the rioters (and other assorted criminals) go scot free since she’s been in office. Hopefully, Dorn wasn’t on her ‘secret list’ of cops she won’t even charge from, though it remains to be seen what she ultimately does.

She’ll likely allow a plead to assault, or burglary.

Her tenure has been, umm, interesting to say the least.

      1. avatar GomeznSA says:

16V – hmm – she sounds like she would have a hard time convicting some one of felonious mopery with intent to creep. Or as CID was known to do in my army days downgrading a forcible rape to unauthorized entry – and yes some of them were really that bad.

    2. avatar PTM says:

It is and given he was a convicted felon to begin with…yup.

But, it usually takes 20 years or more finally to execute anyone.

  5. avatar Larry says:

So here we have a black thug killing a retired black officer trying to uphold the Law!!! All I see from these riots that are using the excuse of one black man killed to burn down building, loot, and kill innocent people!!! This is not a peaceful protest!!! Now these rioters are demanding and demanding more and more!! When will it stop?

    1. avatar Alexander says:

On Nov 3. This is just elections by other means.

      1. avatar The grid says:

You’re wrong to think it will end in the ballot, if anything it might get uglier if Trump is re-elected. They might even find a way to postpone the elections, or get away with voter fraud never seen before, ending with Dementia Joe in the WH. Scary, but very possible. Most of these rioters and protesters are having a blast, they are in no hurry to go back to their normal lives, if it has to last 6 months it will kind of like the “gilets jaunes” in France but more violent.

    2. The riot-and-loot thugs and those who support and abet them will not stop so long as their demands are met or even acknowledged. The violence can stop only when the rest of us say NO.

      1. avatar 16V says:

The problem is the “prosecutor” in this case. And the city…

        1. avatar 9x39 says:

That a good man was lost in this case, is beyond the pale.

        2. avatar Someone says:

Was Obama racist when he said that if he had a son, he would look like that violent thug Trayvon Martin?

  9. avatar SteveM says:

The suspect was no doubt apprehended and hauled in by some social workers as we have no need of the police for such things.

    1. avatar Dude says:

Word is, the Joe Biden campaign is scraping up bail money for that poor young, oppressed man as we speak. sarcasm

  10. avatar Dude says:

Well, at least he got to die from the hands of someone that didn’t have “hate” in his heart. Mr. Dorn is way less deader this way. Unfortunately, he’s now ineligible to become a martyr.

  11. avatar enuf says:

    Good work.

A lesson here for anyone going out to defend a store against rioters, looters and arsonists is do not do it alone. Team up with shop owners, other citizens. The show of force is more likely to work when there are numbers on multiple roof tops, multiple storefronts. One man against a mob is much more likely to go the way of the mob.

I believe most defensive gun uses do not require firing a shot.

  12. avatar JUSTPASSINTHRU says:

I suppose that Mr. Cannon didn’t get the message that “Black Lives Matter”? Two wasted lives,,, R.I.P. Captain Dorn.(referencing Dorn’s bio, it seems we’ve lost a stellar Human Being).

  13. avatar I Haz A Question says:

I’ve been checking CNN for any mention of this, and I haven’t found anything, likely because it doesn’t fit their narrative, which is anything-to-oust-Trump. Instead, this is a sampling of their splash page headlines this morning:

“TRUMP TRIES TO RECOVER FROM A DISASTROUS WEEK”

“BIDEN HAS DOUBLE-DIGIT LEAD OVER TRUMP”

“OPINION: DARE WE BELIEVE THAT THIS TIME WILL BE DIFFERENT?”

“DEMOCRATS TO ANNOUNCE SWEEPING POLICING LEGISLATION”

“COLIN POWELL: TRUMP LIES ‘ALL THE TIME'”

    “OPINION: TRUMP’S MOST SELF-DEFEATING MOVE”

    1. avatar Dude says:

It really is insane that they maintain any level of credibility.

    2. avatar Tim says:

“BIDEN HAS DOUBLE-DIGIT LEAD OVER TRUMP”

CNN is still drinking bong-water, I see.

      1. avatar MADDMAXX says:

No it’s true, they just don’t say where… They Poll N.Y., Ca., South Fl., Il. and a few other deep blue areas then call it a “National Poll”

    3. avatar Garrison Hall says:

Something to consider. During the last election, opinion polls were notoriously unreliable because of 1. oversampling of progressives over conservatives and 2. a persistent refusal of Trump’s newly constituted conservative insurgency to respond to opinion polls. Lacking a representative sample you cannot rely on the usual statistical controls allow you to create predictive accuracy. Still, lacking anything better and needing something to fill time with, the news media kept talking about these badly flawed opinion polls. As the pollsters and establishment media were predicting a Clinton win, his conservative insurgent demographic—which had hidden from the poll takers—showed up to elect Trump. Those conservative-insurgent Republicans are still refusing to talk to pollsters.

      1. avatar MADDMAXX says:

        Guilty!

  14. avatar Florida Kracker says:

This guy is exactly what’s wrong with our country today, yet he wants me to believe in his cause because he’s been oppressed and been treated mean by white and black cops. Shoot him in the street no trial, send a message. Trash comes in many different colors including WHITE and anyone who joins in on the MOVEMENT regardless of color who wants to loot and burn should pay the price.

    1. avatar Tennessee Tom says:

I totally agree. There is scum and low life every where you go and color has nothing to do with it. You can be killed in the inner city as well as out in deep rural America. City trash is no different from trailer trash. It all stinks.

  15. avatar C.S. says:

The media double standard between David Dorn vs George Floyd is definition of treason and insurrection.

  16. avatar Ing says:

This guy looks like a real winner. It’ll be interesting to see if he actually ends up getting convicted and doing time. If we ever hear another word about it, that is…

  17. avatar Nanashi says:

Send this punk to the gas chamber!

  18. avatar Fred says:

So much for Black Lives Matter with this perp! Missouri is a capital punishment state! Hope they fry his ass for this ! So sad what he did!

  19. avatar Cops can be criminals too says:

Another black on black crime, (caused by police)? WTF!
A criminal is a criminal, black, white or purple! 💩👜🐀

  20. avatar Buff cousin Elroy says:

Im glad they got this turd, the video of that man on the sidewalk doing the death gurgle, with cell phone still in hand was very, very hard to watch. Hope he gets life.

  21. avatar NORDNEG says:

13%ers do the majority of crimes in the inner cities, but the media wants you to feel sorry for them because of the color of their skin. Sick.

    1. avatar Noamsaing says:

Not actually 13%. About 6% of the population commits over 50% of the murders. Young black males.

  22. avatar anonymous4goodreason says:

If Mr. Dorn’s gun was not in his holster (I’m assuming he was armed) the perp will plead guilty to multiple theft charges and self defense in the shooting. Mr. Dorn is no longer a cop and did not own/lease the property.

    1. avatar Viejo Torro says:

The victim had lawful standing to be in the building.

Self Defense isn’t a valid defense if you are commiting a felony.

      1. avatar anonymous4goodreason says:

        @Viejo
Your arguments depend on state law, I don’t know Minnesota law and that’s why I threw it out there. I don’t think the ex-cop was in the building when shot but the shooter clearly committed a felony since he was a prohibited person with a gun. I’m not sure he was actually in the act of looting when the shooting occurred.

  23. avatar Cloudbuster says:

I can’t tell if he’s antifa or Amish, which do you think?

    1. avatar TheBSonTTAG says:

Both, they caught him by the hoof marks his horse left at the getaway scene and matched the DNA from his public defecation on the sidewalk.

  24. This animal deserved the death penalty. That is what you do with a rabid animal. Give this scum the same consideration he gave his victim.

  25. avatar sound awake says:

it would be much easier to believe black lives matter if blacks themselves actually appeared to believe that black lives matter
    that starts by:
1 not aborting their babies at 3x the rate of their population
2 not killing each other en masse in the streets
3 not voting democrat which allows 1 and 2 to happen

    1. avatar Dude says:

Self-reflection and change is hard. It’s much easier to blame the white devil for everything.

  26. avatar neiowa says:

What no choke hold unto death? Not possible. snarc off.

  27. avatar Debbie W. says:

Good news perp arrested…Should get death but it’ll be Life Without Parole.
