MORGAN: Every time one of these things happens — Gabrielle Giffords last year, this shooting here — there’s an outrage and then very quickly it dissipates. The American people quite quickly go back to their normal lives and they don’t demand action in a way that I would expect them to. Why do so many Americans not feel angry enough to demand further gun control?

BLOOMBERG: Well, I would take it one step further. I don’t understand why the police officers across this country don’t stand up collectively and say, we’re going to go on strike. We’re not going to protect you. Unless you, the public, through your legislature, do what’s required to keep us safe . . . [more from Hizzoner’s interview with Piers Morgan on CNN after the jump]

After all, police officers want to go home to their families. And we’re doing everything we can to make their job more difficult but, more importantly, more dangerous, by leaving guns in the hands of people who shouldn’t have them, and letting people who have those guns buy things like armor-piercing bullets.

The only reason to have an armor-piercing bullet is to go through a bullet-resistant vest. The only people that wear bullet-resistant vest are our police officers. And that’s true across this whole country. So we should — at some point we have to understand this as our children or our grandchildren or us. But for the police officers, it’s much more immediate. Because when you or I hear shots, we run away. They run towards it.

  1. ”I don’t understand why the police officers across this country don’t stand up collectively and say, we’re going to go on strike. We’re not going to protect you.”

    My sides, they hurt.

    • Heard a joke once: Man goes into doctor. Says he’s depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says “Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up.” Man bursts into tears. Says “But, Doctor…I am Pagliacci.” Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains.

        • Bloomberg is at the point where he putting out stupid shit to draw out a lot of comments and them .gov gets a massive list of IP’s of generally disagreeable people to their gun grabber nonsense. When the black helicopters come, we will be first in line.

  2. This city is afraid of me. I have seen its true face. The streets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of blood and when the drains finally scab over, all the vermin will drown. The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout “Save us!”… and I’ll whisper “no.”

  3. “I don’t understand why the police officers across this country don’t stand up collectively and say, we’re going to go on strike. We’re not going to protect you.”

Because the vast majority are not sociopaths?

  4. He’s never met anyone who even knows somebody who knows somebody who lives someplace where, when you call the police, the nearest LEO is 45 minutes away. Those people all have their own guns and very little crime.

Excluding, of course, his subjects who are put on hold when they call 911. Well, he’s probably never met any of them either.

  5. Oh gee, mister billionaire, why don;t they strike.

As a 20+ year police officer I can answer pretty simple:

1.) It is illegal for them to strike
2.) Most police officers do not believe that gun control has worked in the past or every will in the future, not even a bit.
8.) 80,000 plus member of the NRA are cops

PS: When I say most police officers, I mean most patrol officers, you know, the ones who are actually on the streets every day. Not the commissioners or other high ranking brass who have, long ago, been relegated to being nothing more then political figures themselves.

    • +1
There are cops, and then there are bureaucrats and politicians in blue uniforms. Some of them used to be cops.

        • Point taken.
          From the dictionary source provided:
          1: . . .
2: government characterized by specialization of functions, adherence to fixed rules, and a hierarchy of authority
3: a system of administration marked by officialism, red tape, and proliferation

The 2nd and 3rd meanings are closer to my intent. Perhaps “apparatchik” (2nd meaning, in your choice of dictionary) would have been better.

        • So tell me — why did my response to Pro-Liberty go through the delay of such an “approval” process ? I never experienced that before on this site. I am sure I don’t have “a record” of a lot of “FLAME DELETED” offenses on my record.
Could someone tell me if I am being singled out for some reason?
Is it something I did? Is it something about Pro-Liberty?
          Anxiously awaiting your reply.

        • Not to be a problem to you, but what triggered the spam filter? Maybe I can avoid the problem in the future.

        • I don’t see anything obvious that would trigger it.

There are some “knowns” like certain words, even within other words, and more than two links in one commment, but your comment doesn’t have anything wrong with it that I can see.

I’d be interested to know the ratio of “actual bad” to false positives as far as what it flags. I’ve run afoul of it for no reason I can discern, as well.

    • Good points. Bloomberg is out of touch with the basics of reality and human decency, why would he be in touch with what everyday cops feel or would do?

      • And the #1 reason police officers do not go in strike (according to LEO Rydak):

1.) It is illegal for them to strike

Mayor Bloomberg, You as a mayor should be familiar with at least SOME laws, the ones that affect those you are in charge of, such as the NYPD… I guess you want your officers all in trouble under federal law. Oh wait… 2nd Amendment rights don’t belong to the public, just the elite ruling class?

    • I know there were a few posts on here about how the LEO’s actually like having CCW folks out there.
Of course I might just be out of touch with reality.. Oh Wait, Michael has that cornered already.

        • Your a California LEO, if you ran across a citizen carrying a gun who wasnt a cop, would you arrest him and take his gun?

      • Its true. I have never met a cop in my entire time on the job who was for gun control. Sometimes we’ll meet a guy who we wonder how in the world he got a CCW but in the grand scheme of things, CCW holders are a major plus to our mission. As long as they, and for that matter us, make sound choices.

        • I have never met a cop in my entire time on the job who was for gun control.
Really? All cops are for gun control, they love disarming the populace and getting guns off the street.

        • Come to Illinois and try open carrying and see what happens. If you’ve never met a cop who was for gun control, then you havent been paying attention, try going to opencarry.org sometime.

As I said before, cops love getting guns off the street in order to make us “safe”.

        • I remember a NYC cop I know commenting on the Bernie Goetz subway shooting as:
“That man did more for the cause of law and order in NYC than the police have been allowed to do in years” .

        • The Goetz shooting in many ways was just like Zimmerman, with the NAACP and Al Sharpton getting their panties in a bunch because some black shitheads got shot while they were committing a crime. Too bad he didnt kill them, because his assailants were later convicted of additional robberies and rapes.

        • Really? All cops are for gun control, they love disarming the populace and getting guns off the street.

          I know two who aren’t.

        • I know a lot who aren’t.

Unfortunately, I’ve come across a few who suffer under the delusion that only they are competent to possess or carry a firearm.

    • As a 20+ year police officer I can answer pretty simple:

1.) It is illegal for them to strike

      Police have striked before.
Boston Police did so in 1919
Baltimore Police did so in 1974
New Orleans Police did so in 1979
Philadelphia Transit Police did so in 2012

I’m sure there are more but i’m too lazy to go thru more google results.

      • Just because something is illegal doesn’t mean it wont happen. It is still illegal…you know, like convicted felons in possession of handguns with the serial numbers scratched off. Still happens.

There is no Philadelphia Transit Police. SEPTA transit police are not a municipal police department and operate under different rules. They are most closely associated with a private police force.

        • Your telling me that the police would break the law to extort even more money from the tax payers!?! Really!?! Who would have thought that!

      • Also, police in states where they can’t legally strike often come down with a case of the “blue flu” en masse.

  6. Its funny, as it is illegal for police officers to strike in NY (Taylor law), and the last time there was a public worker strike, Bloomberg was all over it to condemn it.

But, you know, we should listen to him.

  7. how about we citizen’s go on strike until the government recognizes our right to be able to protect ourselves. and it’d be nice if baa baa bloomberg got fired in the process.

  8. The Mayor raises what might be an interesting thought experiment. What if the entire NYPD and the Mayor’s personal security detail stayed home? Would Mr. Bloomberg venture out into the streets of his fine city? I wonder…

  9. Twisted Twisted Twisted. Both of them. And they both are employed to show or act on facts, truth and rights. Wow…… send them both looking for a new job…….

    Nous Defions

  10. Actually, if they did strike it could get interesting. I would think gun sales would sky rocket. People would quickly discover that guns can be very useful.

  11. Oh my dear lord, this sub-human piece of dog shit manages to sink lower and lower every day. He is without a doubt the most despicable scumsucker I have ever heard of.

He is an utter affront to the values of the US.

Please, PLEASE, NYPD, go on strike. I beg you. Unleash upon the morons that voted this idiot in the consequences of their stupidity. And when the 2×4 of reality has connected with their skulls enough times, maybe they’ll look at Bloomberg and do what any good American should do to a tyrant.

  12. And if the military doesn’t believe that the voters have done “what’s required to keep us safe,” should they go on strike?

It’s kind of scary that this is Bloomberg’s first reaction when the Democratic process makes laws that he disagrees with. The fact that someone like Bloomberg passes as a “moderate” is just one more reminder of why we need to start electing some genuine libertarians.

      • There are plenty of libertarians active in the GOP right now, largely thanks to the Ron Paul campaign. Then of course the Libertarian Party has been around for quite a while.

  13. Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do.
    –Benjamin Franklin

A fool and his money are soon elected.
    –Will Rogers

Before a man speaks it is always safe to assume that he is a fool. After he speaks, it is seldom necessary to assume it.
    –H. L. Mencken

Every man is a damn fool for at least five minutes every day; wisdom consists in not exceeding the limit.
    –Elbert Hubbard

You can fool some of the people all the time, and those are the ones you want to concentrate on.
    –George W. Bush

  14. I know plenty of cops who are great people and do their best everyday to help others, but everyone here knows that they usually arrive in time to clean up the mess not stop it. You need to protect yourself, because nobody is going to arrive in time to save you when the SHTF.

  15. Whenever you encounter someone that espouses an opinion that is contrary to your own, and possibly that even defies logic or rationality, remember this:

    THAT GUY VOTES

Furthermore, the more strongly held his opinions, the more that rule becomes true. Remember to speak your mind, so that he doesn’t speak it for you.

  16. What are these “armor-piercing bullets” we always hear about? Is there really such a thing, or is this just akin to calling deer rifles “sniper rifles”?

    • There are armor piercing bullets but in this case I believe the media is referencing standard copper jacketed rifle rounds. A High velocity, full metal jacket bullet will go through the soft vests most LEOs wear. To the idiots in the media that means armor piercing.

I have not seen or read any specifics on brand or specifications on his purchased ammo.

      • My son once dropped a deer where it was standing behind a piece of corrugated steel with a 140g soft point 7mm-08. Never thought about those being “armor piercing”, but I guess they are.

    • M855 surplus (green tip) 5.56 is armor piercing, it uses a SS109 bullet. Surplus M2 AP 30.06 is readily available on gun broker too, and can be loaded in to .308, although the later is a federal felony. Not that it matters, just get a 44 mag and you can penetrate all the cops vests you want.

      • What they are trying to do is outlaw “armor-piercing” and “dum-dum” bullets. Then they will classify ALL bullets into one forbidden category or the other.

  17. I, frankly, am quite tired of the idea that “officer safety” or “public safety” trumps my rights as an individual.

If Officer Jagoff wants to feel safe during the course of his employment, then perhaps he would be better suited to hairdressing or plumbing.

  18. Bloomberg is proving himself a demented, senile old coot. Better to be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.

  19. this guy really is suffering from some kind of mental illness…really…every time he opens his mouth it’s like listening to someone in the latter stages of dementa..just babbeling on……

  20. I’m no expert, but I’m pretty darn sure the average body armor would fail to stop a bullet from my lever-action 30-30. Hey, whadda ya know… I own an evil gun that fires armor-piercing ammunition!

Maybe Bloomberg is right. Maybe my rifle traces its heritage back to the days when ballistic armor didn’t exist precisely because it has no other purpose than to defeat ballistic armor. So my rifle can’t be used for target practice. Or for hunting. Or for any other sporting purpose, like (say) cowboy action shooting. Here’s the real tragedy: I bought this thing that can only be used to defeat body armor, and I never meet anyone that’s wearing it! Well, except for the police…I don’t *meet* them precisely, but I do see them driving by from time to time, but I haven’t worked up the courage to assassinate them yet.

Maybe NYC cops should refuse to protect Moron Mayor Bloomberg until he does something that will actually reduce the crime rate. That’s a strike that might have a positive effect.

  21. Severe cognitive dissonance! Bloomy did not respond to the question at all, which is why Americans qucikly “forget” these rare occurrences and go back to their normal lives. NONE of what he said has anything to do with any of that. No “armor oiercing bullets” were used, no police officers were shot. What he said was, if I understand it, no one but cops should have guns so that cops don’t get killed in the line of duty. What about the rest of us? we should disarm, and we are not as important as police officers? Totally bizarre exchange.

    • What more can be expected of someone who actually brags about running that toxic cesspool. His city is dangerous, filthy, and corrupt, and he happily assumes responsibility. And he steps even further off the deep end by suggesting that other cities should be run like his.

  22. right, great idea bloomfuck.

allow the police officers to go on strike, you know, the only members of the population that are allowed to be armed. Im sure the wealthy in manhattan and their rare concealed carry licenses and private security will pickup the slack…oops. perhaps not.

bloomberg is one of those abscesses that deserves lifetime banishment from the political arena. One word: damage control.

  23. Bloomberg and Randell are cut from the same saggy ill-fitting cloth.
Both him and Randell should be required to see a shrink to make sure they
are not a danger to society.

  24. If the NYPD goes on strike will Bloomberg be doing the stop and frisk by himself ?
Every time I see “Protect and Serve” on a cop car I know that when seconds count the police are only minutes away.
Best guess is that the public in general doesn’t know that the police are not legally obligated to protect anyone.

  25. Bloomberg has become so zealous in his quest he has gone “full retard.”

If I was a logical person who cared about his safety and that of his family, and I heard that the whole city’s police force was on strike, I might actually look to invest in a gun or two as a result, not abandon the guns I have (if any).

    • And it would be ironic if they went on strike, since historically they have been used to break strikes, and bust unions.

  26. How come Bloomy is not offering to give up his personal security detail? Is his life more important than those of his citizens??

  27. “We’re not going to protect you.”

Interesting choice of words. The U.S. Supreme Court has already ruled on numerous occasions that local law-enforcement has no duty to protect individuals, but only a general duty to enforce the laws. There are a few notable exceptions to that (like prisoners in custody), but for the most part, we’re responsible for protecting ourselves and our family from immediate danger. Regardless of whether the police are on strike or not.

So, how do we go about protecting ourselves? Well, if you’ve got a lot of money, fame, or political power, you hire some bodyguards. If not, you’re stuck with whatever else you can afford and are comfortable with. For example, some oc spray, a stout cane, or a…..gasp…..firearm.

  28. Couldn’t they just skip the foreplay and jerk each other off until they reach their socialist paradise already?

Why does CNN put this piece of British shit on TV, and WHY THE HELL DO RESIDENTS OF NEW YORK KEEP VOTING FOR THIS ASSHOLE?

  29. Does Bloomberg realize what he said? That jackass just gave perhaps the most compelling reason to have firearms: so you can protect yourself and your family when the police go on strike.

Adding insult to injury, his attitude is to terrorize the populace into submission; I can hear his thoughts “If the people won’t willingly surrender their right to own firearms, then let’s have the police withdraw so criminals can terrorize the populace with impunity. That should convince the populace to give up their arms.” Thus Bloomberg just provided perhaps the second most compelling reason to be armed: so you can defend yourself when government decides to penalize you for not complying with their every whim.

And then his final insult is that the lives and safety of police officers are more important than the lives and safety of citizens.

I have never met a gun rights advocate with such a mindset, ever. Talk about the proverbial “wolf in sheep’s clothing”.

  30. It’s alarming how much nonsense one person can fit into a few words. Bloombutt is so full of himself that he’s lost sight of his duty as an elected official and his duty as an American citizen.

One question: When he leaves office, does he have to join Ex-mayors Against Guns?

  31. Well that makes a lot of f&^*%ing sense, put away the very people that you claim are the only ones to protect us. What’s your strategy, oh mighty mayor, to encourage psychos to go on a killing spree to prove a point? (not that they necessarily would)

This is just the latest example of gun control facists, and/or ignorant plebes not caring about facts. Wherever it’s tried, uber gun control either leads to higher crime rates (including murder), or something resembling naziism.

  32. Respected Peace Officers, the people of your community have established a police force to serve the public; not the reverse. It’s a tough assignment. Don’t want the job? Don’t take it. I don’t blame you. Should you decide to decline the job I’ll presume you still want to go home safe each day; therefore you’ll be armed. I want to go home to my family too. That’s why as a good citizens we both walk armed and are no threat to each other. Go in peace.
As for you Mr. Bloomberg…go take a hike.

  33. Perhaps Mayor Bloomberg should study up on case law. Current precedent, unless I’m mistaken in my understanding, is that the police have no responsibility to protect.
    Warren v. District of Columbia
    Castle Rock v. Gonzales
    DeShaney v. Winnebago County

  34. Isn’t the reason why people forget about these things because of nut jobs like Bloomberg trying to push their agenda? I’m already pretty tired of listening to all these gun grabbers already.

  35. I can only surmise that he’s jealous of Obama being voted “gun salesman of the year” three times running?

  36. “The only people that wear bullet-resistant vest are our police officers.”
    And not James Holmes, evidently.

    Bloomberg—what a complete dumbass.
