After all, police officers want to go home to their families. And we’re doing everything we can to make their job more difficult but, more importantly, more dangerous, by leaving guns in the hands of people who shouldn’t have them, and letting people who have those guns buy things like armor-piercing bullets.
The only reason to have an armor-piercing bullet is to go through a bullet-resistant vest. The only people that wear bullet-resistant vest are our police officers. And that’s true across this whole country. So we should — at some point we have to understand this as our children or our grandchildren or us. But for the police officers, it’s much more immediate. As a 20+ year police officer I can answer pretty simple:
1.) It is illegal for them to strike
2.) Most police officers do not believe that gun control has worked in the past or every will in the future, not even a bit.
8.) 80,000 plus member of the NRA are cops
PS: When I say most police officers, I mean most patrol officers, you know, the ones who are actually on the streets every day. Not the commissioners or other high ranking brass who have, long ago, been relegated to being nothing more then political figures themselves.

Its true. I have never met a cop in my entire time on the job who was for gun control. Sometimes we’ll meet a guy who we wonder how in the world he got a CCW but in the grand scheme of things, CCW holders are a major plus to our mission. As long as they, and for that matter us, make sound choices.

I remember a NYC cop I know commenting on the Bernie Goetz subway shooting as:

Police have striked before.
Boston Police did so in 1919
Baltimore Police did so in 1974
New Orleans Police did so in 1979
Philadelphia Transit Police did so in 2012

There is no Philadelphia Transit Police. SEPTA transit police are not a municipal police department and operate under different rules. They are most closely associated with a private police force.

I know plenty of cops who are great people and do their best everyday to help others, but everyone here knows that they usually arrive in time to clean up the mess not stop it. You need to protect yourself, because nobody is going to arrive in time to save you when the SHTF.

What are these “armor-piercing bullets” we always hear about? Is there really such a thing, or is this just akin to calling deer rifles “sniper rifles”?
There are armor piercing bullets but in this case I believe the media is referencing standard copper jacketed rifle rounds. A High velocity, full metal jacket bullet will go through the soft vests most LEOs wear. To the idiots in the media that means armor piercing.
I have not seen or read any specifics on brand or specifications on his purchased ammo.
My son once dropped a deer where it was standing behind a piece of corrugated steel with a 140g soft point 7mm-08. Never thought about those being “armor piercing”, but I guess they are.
M855 surplus (green tip) 5.56 is armor piercing, it uses a SS109 bullet. Surplus M2 AP 30.06 is readily available on gun broker too, and can be loaded in to .308, although the later is a federal felony. Not that it matters, just get a 44 mag and you can penetrate all the cops vests you want.
What they are trying to do is outlaw “armor-piercing” and “dum-dum” bullets. Then they will classify ALL bullets into one forbidden category or the other.
I, frankly, am quite tired of the idea that “officer safety” or “public safety” trumps my rights as an individual.

I’m no expert, but I’m pretty darn sure the average body armor would fail to stop a bullet from my lever-action 30-30. Hey, whadda ya know… I own an evil gun that fires armor-piercing ammunition!
Maybe Bloomberg is right. Maybe my rifle traces its heritage back to the days when ballistic armor didn’t exist precisely because it has no other purpose than to defeat ballistic armor. So my rifle can’t be used for target practice. Or for hunting. Or for any other sporting purpose, like (say) cowboy action shooting. Here’s the real tragedy: I bought this thing that can only be used to defeat body armor, and I never meet anyone that’s wearing it! Well, except for the police…I don’t *meet* them precisely, but I do see them driving by from time to time, but I haven’t worked up the courage to assassinate them yet.

Every time I see “Protect and Serve” on a cop car I know that when seconds count the police are only minutes away.
Best guess is that the public in general doesn’t know that the police are not legally obligated to protect anyone.

Interesting choice of words. The U.S. Supreme Court has already ruled on numerous occasions that local law-enforcement has no duty to protect individuals, but only a general duty to enforce the laws. There are a few notable exceptions to that (like prisoners in custody), but for the most part, we’re responsible for protecting ourselves and our family from immediate danger. Regardless of whether the police are on strike or not.
So, how do we go about protecting ourselves? Well, if you’ve got a lot of money, fame, or political power, you hire some bodyguards. If not, you’re stuck with whatever else you can afford and are comfortable with. For example, some oc spray, a stout cane, or a…..gasp…..firearm.
How about the process starts with his paid police security platoon?

Does Bloomberg realize what he said? That jackass just gave perhaps the most compelling reason to have firearms: so you can protect yourself and your family when the police go on strike.
Adding insult to injury, his attitude is to terrorize the populace into submission; I can hear his thoughts “If the people won’t willingly surrender their right to own firearms, then let’s have the police withdraw so criminals can terrorize the populace with impunity. That should convince the populace to give up their arms.” Thus Bloomberg just provided perhaps the second most compelling reason to be armed: so you can defend yourself when government decides to penalize you for not complying with their every whim.
And then his final insult is that the lives and safety of police officers are more important than the lives and safety of citizens.

Respected Peace Officers, the people of your community have established a police force to serve the public; not the reverse. It’s a tough assignment. Don’t want the job? Don’t take it. I don’t blame you. Should you decide to decline the job I’ll presume you still want to go home safe each day; therefore you’ll be armed. I want to go home to my family too. That’s why as a good citizens we both walk armed and are no threat to each other. Go in peace.
