The day after Otis McDonald went on to his reward, chicagotribune.com has a report on a defensive gun use by a resident with a concealed cary permit. “The man was walking from his garage to the front of his home when two males in hoodies appeared in a gangway between his home and the neighbor’s home, [Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Michael] Sullivan said. One of the two men pulled a handgun from his waistband and pointed at the man who took out his own gun and managed to fire several times at the males, Sullivan said . . .
The males fled the area without being struck and the shooting did not result in any property damage, police said.
After the shooting, police responded and determined that the man was shooting in self-defense. The man had a valid firearm owner’s identification card, a valid concealed carry permit and police were able to determine that he had completed a required concealed carry class and was properly trained, Sullivan said.
The man is not facing charges as police search for the two males, described as a tall male and a short male. Those two face charges.
Imagine that! No charges for defending himself against a lethal threat by exercising his natural, civil and Constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms. And in case we couldn’t figure it out, we now know the two bad guys will face charges! You know, if and when they’re apprehended.
Anyway, there you go; a message to Chicago criminals: some Windy City residents will now stand their ground. You have been warned. [h/t lowhouse5]
I don’t believe that anyone in my county has ever been robbed at an ATM. I suppose if one were to be the victim of a street robbery locally an ATM would be a good place but that sort of robbery is virtually unheard of here.
On that note, as I concealed carried my pair of EDCs through the day I encountered; One old motorcyclist who’s jacket had ridden up exposing the lower portion of the slide of his pistol as he road,
One fellow openly carrying a large revolver in an auto parts store, and, though I had my jacket off attempting to change a flat thus making my sidearm clearly visible a fellow stopped along the side of the road to ask if I needed help, then talked to me about my choice of pistol as he proudly described his latest purchase.
I’m not saying that lots of good guys with guns makes bad guys behave better, I’m just sayin’. . .
Doc: “Any guns in the house?”
Me: “You get enough sleep last night? Eating right? Stressed out? Marriage going good?”
Doc: “Why do you ask?”
Me: “Because doctors kill over ten times more people than guns every year due to medical mistakes. I’m safer at home with my guns than in your office”.
http://www.prweb.com/releases/medical-errors-epidemic/2012-conference/prweb9378564.htm
“788,558—that’s the number of deaths in the United States caused by medical errors and hospital acquired infections (HAIs) in 2009¹. That’s 33% of all deaths in America that year.”
http://blogs.wsj.com/ideas-market/2012/09/25/cause-of-death-medical-error-and-overtreatment/
“The latest Institute of Medicine report cites a leading study that quantifies the problem at nearly double the prior estimate (180,00 deaths) among Medicare beneficiaries alone, which would rank preventable harm as the number 3 cause of death in the U.S. after cardiovascular disease and cancer.”
Too bad Otis can’t be reached for comment…..
We need to outlaw hoodies. They are dangerous.
You will get my hood it when you rip it from my cold balding head.
Military style assault weapons belong in the hands of soldiers on ice skates, not in our city streets!
Never having shot at anyone, I’m a bit curious as to how someone “properly trained” can “fire several times at the males” at what I assume to be a legitimate self defense distance, without hitting them at all.
Even though I no longer shoot nearly as often as I used to, and should; completely missing two human sized targets, despite firing several rounds at them, just strikes me as a bit less than entirely competent firearms use.
While never being in a gunfight, I have gotten robbed at gunpoint, hence don’t really buy the whole “everything goes out the window in a life and death situation” spiel. While certainly feeling the effects of adrenaline, I had no problem recognizing the perp’s gun, and making note of the make, model and license plate number of his (more like the guy he stole if from’s) car.
Hence, I kind of expect people at least have the basic competence required to hit the people they pull guns on. But I guess they don’t call our “The Age of Incompetence” for nothing. At least the dude had a gun. And used it to solve the problem at hand. Which is the most important part.
In these cases, “properly trained” only means that he met the minimum bureaucratic standards unconstitutionally imposed by the Illinois concealed carry laws.
It is amusing to note, however, that even though he drew against an already drawn weapon, a tactical no-no, the perps were so surprised by his response that they did not even get a shot off themselves before getting in the wind. Assuming they actually had a real and/or functional firearm in the first place.
Someone recently published some stats on the status of handguns that criminals use for robbery. I think it was over 40% of such guns are incapable of firing because they are either broken, unloaded, or have the wrong ammunition in them.
As most of us here at TTAG know, fine motor control is lost in an adrenalin dump of this nature, and shooting at targets that are attacking/threatening you in a dynamic environment is a wee tad bit different than shooting the prescribed 30 rounds to qualify for concealed carry in Illinois. That said, perhaps some of this came into play: David Grossman documented that many humans consciously or subconsciously miss when an opportunity to exact lethal force against someone (although the military is learning how to counteract this in more recent decades) presents itself. For a great read, check out http://www.amazon.com/On-Killing-Psychological-Learning-Society/dp/0316040932
Or maybe he just did some sucky shooting after all!
Good for him. I live in Cook County,Illinois. From what I understand you DON’T need a concealed carry licenseto carry on your own property. Stepping OFF your property line is a different matter. Nope…didn’t hear about this on the local TV news. Normalizing DGU is a giant step in the right direction.
Way to Go!!!!! Thugs be warned! Chicago is no longer a gun free crime perfect city.
Awesome news. First of many, I hope.
..Er, not that I want people to be assaulted by thugs, but that..oh, hell, you know what I mean.
My GP no. My shrink however, I am teaching him how to shoot, and will be going with him to buy his first AR, and a 9MM pistol. 🙂
I believe Otis is the angel over this guy now.
I have! But She was only asking for my advise on a concealed carry gun.
My doctor himself did not ask but my multi-page questionnaire for my recent routine physical asked if we had guns in our home.
I tried to watch the show, but my brain won’t let me.
“We’re men (we’re manly men) we’re men in tights… YES!”
So full of win. Guns are useless when someone had already pulled one on you. Except, not
Good op-Ed in Forbes. http://www.forbes.com/sites/paulhsieh/2013/01/22/why-doctors-should-not-ask-their-patients-about-guns/
What the hell is going on in Bridgeport, CN that gives them a 52/1 rape/murder ratio?
And in other news, the sky is in fact NOT falling.
I take back what I said. He hit the target twice. SOB, uh, SOG I mean, give gun folks a bad name and I hate it when people assume I must like the show. At least it gives me the chance to enlighten them that not all gun nuts are nuts.
It is really not fair to ruin the ant-gun folks’ arguments by bringing in “fact” to this conversation.
For shame!
My primary doesn’t ask those questions. If ever a stand-in or perhaps a specialist I might need to see ever asked such questions, I’d actually tell him the truth: that I feel entirely comfortable and well-adjusted, but I believe those types of questions are more political than medical in nature and are thus inappropriate.
Say it with a smile, though, and never return to such a doctor. Last thing you want is a mark in your “permanent record” mischaracterizing your dismay at the questions themselves as your being “hyper defensive” or “disturbingly withdrawn” in response to so-called routine inquiries. Just get through such an encounter as casually and quickly as possible and put as much distance between you and that doctor as you can.
“He pled guilty to a few felonies and some misdemeanors, did a few months and was released. Again.”
Yeah. I beat he’s *never* going to threaten and rob people again. /sarcasm
Chief Douchecanoe is an unfortunate victim of a system that coddles him too much.
his facial hair and quaf says volumes
This is fantastic news. We may just have to create a new metric, but it’s also likely one the few times we’ll see a story about this as we head into summer, unless someone gets killed as a result.
Also, keep in mind when you read stories like this from here, that News Affairs is the PR arm of the CPD and reports up to McBeerNuts. The rank and file are pretty pro-gun whereas the leadership are appointed hacks who are decidedly anti-gun.

“Hacks”? You’re being charitable.
Then again, this is a family-friendly website. . .
7% of rape perps were relatives of the victims? Ewwww! Even if we’re talking in-laws or third cousins twice removed (and I’m not even really sure what that means), still ewwww!
As for 38% of rape perps being friends/acquaintances, well, anyone who would rape you is not a true friend.
That 1 in 20 male victimization rate must include, probably predominate, prison populations, no?
I read an estimate that 1 in 9 rapes is male on male, but that men almost never report it. Britain says 3% of men have been raped. 1 in 20 sounds low not counting prison rapes. Don’t get drunk with a guy you don’t know.
ATTENTION! ATTENTION! Be on the lookout for “two males…. a tall male and a short male.” If you spot either one, immediately call the police. ///s
> two males, described as a tall male and a short male
WTH kind of description is that? That pretty much covers all men in Chicago, doesn’t it?
I’m curious about the political party in charge of each of those cities. Most are obvious, but there are several I’m unsure of.
Let me guess… another person who bemoans guns and gun culture without providing ANY real ideas that would have physically stopped these attacks. Even if it were an idea I was against on constitutional grounds, I’d like to see some proposals by these people that would have actually worked in the case they are talking about. But no, they’re just going to talk… and talk… and talk… because it’s easier than coming with anything of substance.
For everyone criticizing his lack of hits I have just one thing to remind you of: George Zimmerman. Get it now?
I bought a DB9 in 2012. Initially I had a number of fte but once I replaced the mag springs with springs from a PF9, it has run flawlessly. I absolutely love this little pistol; it is incredibly small and very accurate for its size. I can carry it year round, no matter how hot the weather.
I was skeptical after reading similar ill-informed reviews before attending their 4 day defensive handgun course (a friend gifted me the certificate so I’d go). I thought it would be a scientology primer in a talker in the desert talking about the evil gubmint. I was pleasantly surprised. it was awesome and I’ve never been around such impressive, professional people as our instructors. it was extremely safe, effective, well thought out in every way, and fun. I am now a lifetime member and bought memberships for my family.
RJF is a joke. SoG, even more.
‘Nuff said.
Have I won yet?
I watched the Carnik Con video this morning and had a good laugh. My wife watched it and thought I was crazy again, still. It’s too bad that the ATF broke all of those RPKs.
“This B**** just never jams.”
We really ought to have a caption contest with that mugshot.
For people confused about gangways or want to see the neighborhood, here is a google streetview of the block where this took place.

I’d say it was the best possible outcome. No gun confiscation, no charges, no legal bills, no civil lawsuits and no cleanup. His duty is to defend his life, not snuff the local thugs. Leave that to the boys in blue (or is it black?).
How many lives have been saved by smoking cigarettes ? Sure people do due from gunshots but guns also save save lives. Sure the moms can argue over the numbers but they can’t refute the obvious that people have been saved by guns. Everybody knows of somebody who has.
This is why this type of moral campaign is not going to work. Not to mention that smoking bothers non smokers where as shooting generally is not done in the presence of non shooters. And of course gun ownership can easily be kept in the closet where as smoking makes you smell and is easy to notice when you smoke every ten minutes or so.
I just bought one yesterday, and fired it today. Not as much recoil as I anticipated, but certainly more than my Redhawk. Perfect little big bore field gun. Fits nicely into a GP100 holster.
I’ll carry it with either hot 44 Special, or light 44 Magnum loads.
Is there a contest for a Walther P22? ‘Cause I’d like to enter.
@ MojoRonin: Some of those Hollyweird sideways-gun-holders are serious… I was at a gun show in FL a couple of years ago and quipped to a vendor (who, it turned out is a police officer) that I would prefer that if someone were shooting at me that they hold their gun sideways, not using the sights. He told me that there’s a guy who comes to his local range who is a known gang member (with no felonies probihiting him from owning a gun) who holds his gun sideways and up high like that and practices nothing but head shots for hours at a time. And is very, very good….
Article writing is also a excitement, if you be familiar with after that you
can write otherwise it is difficult to write.
I entered some but I don’t do “Farcebook”
We need to keep this front and center in NY, CT, MD, and CA.
The prices posted here are currently inacurate.. its 14.99 for the 1st person and around $8 for the 2nd for an hour.. or 7.99 for 1/2 hour.. and 5.99 for 2nd person.. may be off by a dollar but its pretty close.. also buy a bag of ammo and get the firearm rental free. Everything works as described, and much cheaper than described although im posring this in a completely different year
You for you to get a feeling that they include laid itt out for you directly.
A good law practice is a reasonable asset to be honest.
We face a dilemma of philosophy versus reality. Philsophically, modest regulations like, for example, a $5 shall issue CCW permit in the fashion of a library card for all non-incarcerated citizens wouldn’t constitute a big deal for anyone.
Realistically, given the nature of government, it is inevitable someone of poor ethics will rise to power. When that happens, the library card type CCW permit turns into a corrupt party favor for the political machine of the moment. And stays that way indefinitely .
To prevent the Yees and Obama’s of years to come from seizing power they don’t have, we are forced to pragmatically default to ” no regulations at all”. That’s the fact the other side doesn’t like to acknowledge-because, a corrupt government entirely derails the basic foundation of modern liberal collectivism.
What the NHL will look like if they ban fist fights.
Only to the degree that we can come to accept the same, actual definitions of what good and evil mean and how they are to be responded to. Without that foundation, we have no common ground whatsoever.
The media coverage here is typical, very limited mention of the pro gun side, and a big article with a nice picture of Malloy and his minions marking the anniversary.
These bastards can’t be trusted, so no. Conversation over. Let’s just let the bill of rights decide.
PS: I’m serious about engaging- and I imagine there’s plenty more who feel the same- in fact, we do it every day, among “us” and with those new to guns seeking to be informed and educated.
I tried to leave a comment at the Hartford Courant, but I refuse to subsidize FakeBooks privacy invasion for money model, so maybe someone else can do so, or find a way to send him back here-
One more tip, so you are ready for the sharp elbows here in the RBC:
here’s the thing, Mr Cooper- when you start out pretending to speak for one group, and characterize another group, as “the other”- you are pretty much “outed” as someone who wants to understand. You seem more to be self-promoting. Thats ok, just save us the sanctimonious BS. Wayyyyy too boring, “we” have seen that same top-down elitism for so long it turns “us” off, and your comments reveal more about your own state of mind, IMHO:
“There’s an underlying emotional logic to this deadlock. Suspicion about the other side’s basic intentions creates mistrust; mistrust stokes fear; fear feeds anger; anger cues invective”.
On the other hand, if you REALLY want to know how the entire other half of the country thinks (as you put it- and its not nearly that neat and tidy, because the People of The Gun include all colors, political stripes, sex and preference, btw- you are going to have to actually listen, and suspend your self-imposed biases. Can you honestly do that?
Next step is yours…lets see how sincere you are…
Thanks for your support of the NRA. The racial makeup of the crowd is what it is. From my experience most black folks will NEVER support the NRA no matter the benefits. God bless men like Dirk. From an evil old white man married to a beautiful black woman.
Kind of reminds me of Rahm Emanuel proclaiming that Chick Fil-A doesn’t represent “Chicago values”. Well, they cheerfully serve whoever walks in the door, they put principle ahead of profits (closing on Sunday, giving away free food to snow-stranded Georgians), they love their enemies(going out to give water to people standing in the sun to protest against them)–yep, I would say Rahm is right. And as the original Robert pointed out, this clown may be right, too–sadly.
We might find “common ground” if the grabbers ever become sane and acknowledge that the Constitution is the Supreme Law of the Land.
“Braving the gun rally and standing up for the overwhelming majority of Connecticut residents.”
Ah, anyone here feel overwhelmed by this Lebanon Levi wannabe?
The guy in the picture is right. Connecticut values breed child murderers.
