Fairfax, Va. – Today, Secretary of State John Kerry signed the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty on behalf of the Obama administration. The National Rifle Association strongly opposes this treaty, which is a clear violation of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
“The Obama administration is once again demonstrating its contempt for our fundamental, individual Right to Keep and Bear Arms,” said Chris W. Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action. “This treaty threatens individual firearm ownership with an invasive registration scheme. The NRA will continue working with the United States Senate to oppose ratification of the ATT.” . . .
A bipartisan majority of the U.S. Senate is already on record in opposition to ratification of the ATT. On March 23, the Senate adopted an amendment to its FY 2014 Budget Resolution, offered by Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK), that establishes a deficit-neutral fund for “the purpose of preventing the United States from entering into the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty.” This amendment is in addition to the previous efforts of Sen. Jerry Moran (R-KS) and Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA) to pass concurrent resolutions opposing the treaty in their respective chambers.
Notably, the ATT includes “small arms and light weapons” within its scope, which covers firearms owned by law-abiding citizens. Further, the treaty urges recordkeeping of end users, directing importing countries to provide information to an exporting country regarding arms transfers, including “end use or end user documentation” for a “minimum of ten years.” Each country is to “take measures, pursuant to its national laws, to regulate brokering taking place under its jurisdiction for conventional arms.” Data kept on the end users of imported firearms is a de-facto registry of law-abiding firearms owners, which is a violation of federal law. Even worse, the ATT could be construed to require such a registry to be made available to foreign governments.
“These are blatant attacks on the constitutional rights and liberties of every law-abiding American. The NRA will continue to fight this assault on our fundamental freedom,” concluded Cox.
So, it would appear that any delay in signing was so the Obama Administration could send weapons to Syrian terrorists, eh…, freedom fighters. Hope he sent a bunch of ATF-4473 forms with those weapons. Sauce for the American gun owner is sauce for the Syrian “freedom fighter”.

Like the Kyoto Treaty, there are many signatories, but less than a handful who have actually ratified and/or put the arms-trade treaty into force.

Most serious foreign gun manufacturers (FN, Beretta, Glock, Sig, etc) have already opened factories in the US to avoid the US “sporting arms” import regs. I can definitely see US companies starting to mass produce AK47s when the Obama admin stops their import.
We can call it “Onshoring”, or importing good-paying manufacturing jobs into America. AND it has the added side benefit (unintended consequences!) of gearing up America’s gun-making potential.
IIRC Springfield guns are mostly made in Brazil by IMBEL and only assembled in the USA, not sure if that is still the case…I’m also not sure what effect the treaty would have on that though…

I am with you on this. Unfortunately the Heller ruling allows the government to continue to “regulate” our 2nd Amendment right. I would like to see any and all firearms laws totally repealed but it will never happen. Even if we were to elect a totally conservative government it would not happen.
The “end user documentation” language was in the Wassenaar Arrangement too, and has always referred to the retailer when it comes to arms sold to the public. I see no reason why the ATT would be any different.

You may not see a reason, but interpretation and enforcement of such provisions could vary wildly. Why don’t you go ahead and trust the government with a whole lot more power? It’s not like they would direct the IRS to target Republicans, right? As for me, I have enough reason to let the blatant corruption of this current administration guide me into the rational decision not to trust them. if you’re stupid enough to trust Obama, that’s on you.
It’s not a matter of trust; it’s a matter of logic. If you can explain how this treaty is going to change things, when we’ve been operating for so many years with the same language without a gun registry, five of those years under Obama, I’m all ears.
Dave…I hate to break it to you… but it is always about… “trust”…whether about your government, your gardener or girlfriend…but perhaps it is good that you have not learned that as yet in life…good on you… however…having worked for US DoD for a couple of decades…you have to understand that the language they write and place into laws are not always about their intentions in the current context… but in a context that they intend to create down the road, that justifies the use of such “law” to again minimize your rights…I understand your short-term view…but analysis begins by not trusting in the stated intentions of the people proposing the law…by asking who benefits, who gets the money, who controls the power down the road? We see the exercise of that power….and when you are talking about sociopaths who would stab their Mother to get where or what they want…trusting people like Obama, Clinton…The Bush Clan….look where it has gotten us? Eh ?

Indeed, it is both a matter of trust and a matter of reality. Take Obamacare, AKA “The Affordable Health Care Act.” It’s basically a series of 23 additional taxes, exempts those who created it, is enforced by IRS fines, and encourage business to drop employees to part time status so that companies do not have to foot the bill for health insurance. Also, the complexity of the bill allows variable enforcement and additional government scandal.
As for the ATT, additional restrictions mean additional costs. There’s more government control, and therefore more room for government corruption. The reality is that, at the very least, costs on everything firearms – related would go up. Additional bureaucratic jobs would be created. Want to do something quickly? A bureaucracy is not your friend.
I could certainly go on, but in the interest if brevity, I won’t. If you haven’t already done so, taking virtually everything Obama says as an outright lie, misrepresentation, or ploy to gain popularity, you will have a much more realistic view of this administration.
What your failing to realize is the way the treaty is written, it allows the un to change and or update the treaty, without further ratification from countries that sign on. So what is there today, can be changed at a future date to say anything they want it to. And once ratified, we don’t have any say in it..

“They” dont care about today, per Obama change will happen sooner or later, so if this is already signed (and not ratified) it is ready to go for a future Democrat president and Congress…plus it plays into his anti-2A, gun grabbing base (brady, ,etc). For an anti-2A, this is all easy, he doesn’t care a crap about anything but his “legacy”…
Exactly, not ratifying the treaty merely puts it on indefinite hold. Unlike legislation in our country, the treaty does not die if not ratified. It sits there like a malevolent cancer awaiting a more compliant host. It could be ratified twenty years from now with a sufficiently cooperative congress.
Fortunately, treaties require 2/3 of the senators or 67 to ratify. It we get to the point where the gun grabbers outnumber the gun rights folks 2:1, then we are already screwed.
Because once it is signed it stays there forever waiting for a future Senate to ratify it. The only way it disappears is if a future administration renounces the treaty but even then a further future administration could resign it. The current administration is playing a long game on this one and betting no Republican administration will renounce the treaty and that eventually the Dems will have the requisite antigun numbers (Dems and anti-gun Reps) to ratify the treaty and bring it into force.
Just like all the other laws and regulations now on the books even

Yes. The US can repudiate any treaty previously entered into. If I recall correctly we did that to an arms treaty. I can’t recall which one. This was before Obozo was illegally elected.

I suggest kicking them out, selling the UN real estate in NYC for big bucks, cutting the knot off the end of the anti-handgun sculpture and adding a front sight to the resulting snubbie, and requiring the UN to move to Moscow if they want any more money from US taxpayers.

I think this is a huge part of the end game. Under the Obama Care smoke screen the global gun grab takes a little noticed (Armed Intelligence excluded) giant leap forward. Not a peep in the media.
