The vast majority of Canadians favours a total ban on guns in urban areas, a new poll suggests.
According to the poll, conducted by Ekos Research Associates for The Canadian Press, 69 per cent of those surveyed agreed with the statement âI think that there should be a strict ban on guns in urban areas.â
Support was highest in Quebec at 76 per cent and lowest in Alberta at 48 per cent.

So, if people are rarely using guns for protection, how were they being used when someone was killed?
We found the most recent statistics in the 2016 annual report from where Mozayani used to work, the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
In Harris County last year, there were 478 homicides, Â people killing other people.
Knives, clubs, and strangulation were used in some but in the vast majority, a gun was the weapon, Â accounting for 371 of those 478 homicides.
In cases of people killing themselves, guns accounted for 285 of the 500 suicides in Harris County last year.

If the prosecutor decides it was, you won’t be charged with any crimes. If the prosecutor decides it wasn’t, you may face criminal charges ranging from a misdemeanor “reckless endangerment” to murder in the second degree, various assault charges in between, and possibly misconduct involving weapons offenses.
The prosecutor’s decision would depend, in part, on whether you “reasonably believed” deadly force was necessary. Our Supreme Court has said that when a defendant claims their use of deadly force was justified as self-defense:
“(The) defendant must satisfy both an objective and subjective standard; he must have actually believed deadly force was necessary to protect himself, and his belief must be one that a reasonable person would have held under the circumstances.”

2. Every owner and user of firearms must be licensed, with a license exam when first applying, like that for a driverâs license and license renewal periodically with a fee collected for such a service.
3. Each purchase of ammunition must be recorded and cleared by a background check, the ammunition being restricted for hunting purposes. Armor-piercing ammunition shall be banned completely, and all ammunition made subject to an excise tax.

Negative comments are not surprising. Southwestern Pennsylvania has a pretty robust pro-Second Amendment culture in my experience.
Dear god! That times opinion piece sounds like pure unadulterated fascism. I was wondering when he would discuss the gun owner special tattoos and yellow gun badges he would force us to wear. The petty tyrant would love to pass all of thesr laws so good people get shot to death by SWAT teams. Unfortunately we would have hundreds of SWAT teams that would salivate at the chance to wreck some people’s lives in addition to cheerleaders like this guy celebrating the deaths of gun owners at their hands on twitter.

I’d like to invite our misinformed neighbors to the North to take a look at how good a job that a ban (or what amounts to virtually a ban) on guns in urban areas has helped combat crime in places like Chicago and Washington, D.C.
The response to that poll was pure emotionalism, so I doubt it would have any effect.
In one province in Canada (British Columbia), in 2017 there were more than 1100 deaths from opioid abuse up to September 2017. And yet here we are with a “news” organization promoting an agenda to disarm the least violent, least criminal group in all of Canada (licensed gun owners).
So to answer your question, they wouldn’t care. Later on, if we saw an increase in violent crime after a gun ban, they wouldn’t care. I’m sure that The Canadian Press would print plenty of lurid stories about gun violence in America or something in order to cover it up. After all, if you don’t report something, it didn’t happen.

Regarding the Canadian poll, IMHO a poll will record any result that the polling company (or the entity that hired them) wants to achieve. Given that the Canadian press hired the polling company, the results are not surprising and could probably be countered by a pro-gun entity hiring a polling company to achieve opposite results. With regard to the story about the Chinese black market for guns, I see that as an example of exactly what would happen in the USA if the gun control entities have their way with us. The Boston “invitation/RSVP” to legislators is the usual sophomoric tripe that the left-wingers come up with – no surprises here! As to knowing what may happen legally in Alaska after a self-defense shooting, I’ve always believed it incumbent on all persons carrying for self-defense. When you pull that trigger on a presumed bad guy, you’d better be right or your troubles are only beginning. I live in Virginia and have known for years that it’s part of responsible concealed carry to know local law and how it may affect you post trigger-pull. That’s one reason I have concealed carry insurance. I tend to agree with Nicole’s conclusions about how other people might characterize her if they know she is a shooter. It’s a shame, and is why I seldom/never tell anyone that I’m a shooter, gun owner or concealed carrier. It gets the panic juices flowing in other, hoplophobic people, and I have no desire to be SWATTED.
That Canadian poll was an automated phone poll conducted by Ekos for The Canadian Press. Yes, I totally trust the Globe and Mail and Torstar to provide an honest and balanced analysis of gun rights in Canada. The commenters by the pollster himself are disturbing and should be alarming to anyone interested in human rights in Canada. Hell, if we can’t trust people to own guns in urban areas, why do we let them vote? Why do we let them have opinions? Why do we let them walk about without showing proper deference to their betters when in the street?
Yes, Minister had a good piece on polling and it applies to this particular poll. Note how none of the articles link to the poll itself and show the in-depth methodology used. The question asked is deceptively vague as well, as it does not make a distinction between the peaceable licensed gun owners (who commit crime at a lower rate than non-gun-owning Canadians) vs gangsters.
Basically, the Liberal party wants to implement new gun controls for the end of the year, so they need to create the impression of a groundswell of public support. That’s why we are seeing so many anti-gun articles in Canadian news sources. Fortunately, there has been an extensive pushback by pro-gun rights advocates, so they know that there will be electoral consequences for punishing ordinary people.

One of the problems here is using a gun to prevent an ass whipping – you could be protecting yourself from(what many might think was a well deserved ass whipping) a “lesson” or even someone verbally abusing you. Does the law mean that or does the law mean you believe that you could be maimed, have a broken arm or some such or even if you believed your life was in danger.
As far as I am concerned if a stranger is abusive towards me or mine, I should be legally ok to keep shooting until he/she stopped – others might think I was not ok there if the person only meant to rough someone up.
What are the standards here? What if someone is assaulting your dog?
The legal standard (boilerplate-check your local laws) is “Would a reasonable person in that situation have been in fear of their life or grievous bodily harm?”
Verbal abuse without threats of physical assault hardly reach that level, but certainly reach the level of heightened alertness for trouble to escalate to that level.
On the other hand, would a reasonable person expect that someone who was willing to abuse or harm their dog would also be willing to turn on them once the dog was dealt with? I think an armed response to that level of violence MIGHT be defensible in court. Maybe.
I think I’ll stick with “gun lobby blood money.” Sometimes, freedom is a bitch, but it’s always preferable to the alternative.

Relying entirely on a coroner’s reports… The coroner only sees the dead, not the living. If you want to know how many people were killed and by what means, sure, talk to the coroner. It seems that law-abiding citizens don’t often kill people (surprise!…not).
But how the hell would the coroner know how many people were NOT killed because they had a gun?
Judging only by the words on the page, I’m not sure if the writer was an idiot or just presenting pseudo-factual drivel to a readership he presumes is too stupid to think for itself.
The only way to know how many people were NOT killed because they had a gun would be to review the reports of persons treated for gunshot woulds who didn’t die, who shot them, why they were shot, and whether or not they were prosecuted and CONVICTED of a crime after the shooting.
And even that leaves out all the incidents where simply producing the weapon without firing resolved the situation.

The people have rejected far less draconian gun laws repeatedly, see the federal “Assault Weapons Ban” up through “third time’s the charm”, the steady state and local restriction rollbacks over the last 10 years, Supreme Court rulings hauling back “bans by other means”, plus of course polls, national voting that installed a government with which preference, and people “voting” with their dollars and time in record numbers, by buying guns.
The willful people also continue to support the 2A, which makes all these proposals non-starters.

So far “out of hand” that violence and murder using guns keeps going down, precipitously, BTW while the number of guns in the population keeps going up.
The problem is elsewhere: bad people doing bad things, sprawling criminal conspiracies, thugs, terrorists and whack-jobs. And indeed, we should get serious, about violence, and about the drivers of violence done with guns, which do not include peaceful, responsible people owning them.

Easily done. Things that operate “like” machine guns are called machine guns and they’re already registered. Registering “assault weapons” is likewise easy, as citizens already don’t have those. (See “machine guns.”)
Registering every other gun is a non-starter: what’s it pay for?
Motor vehicle registration fees are there to pay for roads & similar. Absent funding something legal, and related, those fees would be afoul of at least infringement, disparate impact, prior restraint, privacy, penalizing a lawful activity, a tax that isn’t a tax, interference with commerce, and … how many more do you want?

Less than a month to go before California starts requiring personal identification, a check against a list of California prohibited persons, and “registration” of every round purchased by reporting caliber and amount of all ammo sold to the California DOJ. Another year and a half and we have to buy licenses to purchase ammo, with a full background check, which license will be required in order to purchase ammo ($50). If you come here to hunt, bring plenty of ammo, since it does not appear that non-state residents will be allowed to buy ammo if they run out.
So banning guns in urban areas? It may just work. Maybe if we pick a test city we can see if it holds true.
Boy, I bet Chicago is kicking themselves for not figuring out this solution before those stupid Canucks.
Since a large number of children are affected by bullies using freedom of speech there must be limits placed to stop this after all if you save one life it’s worth it. In addition with all the fake news reporters should be licensed with felony penalties for fake news or misuse of freedom of speech, like false attack ads.
So, why is there no poll from Western or rural Canada? I know that they would say: No.
