  1. The man is a national treasure. There is no better advocate in the public square today for the motivational utility of shouting.

Apparently he won the role of GySgt Hartmann by launching a 15 minute tirade of vituperation while having stuff thrown at him off-camera and never repeating himself in his continuous stream of soul-lacerating commentary. The story goes that Stanley Kubrick just let him run with it during “Full Metal Jacket”, pausing only to ask the definition of some of the more obscure portions of the DI lexicon.

    • Ermey took Full Metal Jacket, a very average movie, and turned it into a near classic. He just might be the most underrated actor of our generation.

      • once again Ralph with the wise statement. R. Lee Ermey is SO underrated and has been in so many different projects, both film and TV. Anyone else remember him talking about US Space Marines” on space above and beyond, that military sci fi show in the 90’s?

  2. “A man is none the less a slave because he is allowed to choose a new master once in a term of years.”
    -Lysander Spooner

      • It’s only wrong to hear it in someone else’s voice.

It is as if there was never spoken profanity until R. Lee Ermey introduced us to it in 1987.

If Apple ever allows Siri to cuss, it should switch to R. Lee Ermey’s voice.

Want to be berated by an eloquently profane drill instructor? There’s an app for that.

    • “What about you, dirtbag? What’s your excuse?”

      “Sir! Excuse for what, sir!?”

“I’M ASKING THE FUCKING QUESTIONS, HERE!”

  3. Yes indeed Ralph, most people still watch Full Metal Jacket just to see Ermy’s drill instructor scenes. The rest of the movie is average at best.

    • A scene talking about John Wayne, peanuts and poo, comes to mind. The peace symbol, born to kill scene is a classic. But “Me love you long time” is probably the best known words from the film. Thanks to 2 Live Crew and their porno rap sampling from the “too bocoo” scene.

    • Definite + 1.

I own many Kubrick films but the fact that Kubrick (on the set of FMJ) had to ask somebody what a “reach around” was seals the Legend of Ermey for me. Apparently when Kubrick was berating actors (as he always did) Ermey got tired of it and went into full D.I. on Kubrick and shooshed him pretty quick.

  4. “Gunny” Ermey is indeed a national treasure as stated above. I have seen him portray soldiers, preachers, good guys and bad guys, and all were memorable performances. No one can yell obsenities and insults like Gunny, it’s an amazing ability.

  5. I’m Quite annoyed that I cannot comment on this video’s youtube…
Come on NRA, only the Brady Bunch was supposed to be draconian enough to disable comments!

    • Given the litany of nittering morons who have nothing better to do than comment on youtube videos (present company excluded), it’s really not that surprising they’d do so. I disable them on every video I’ve ever distributed. If you want to watch it, watch it. If you want to tell me something about it, rather than the electronic equivalent of tagging a wall somewhere, it’s not that hard to contact the author.
