“Tourist arrested after trying to check in gun at WTC site”
NEW YORK — A tourist from Tennessee reportedly thought she could check her loaded gun at New York City’s Sept. 11 memorial.
The New York Post says 39-year-old Meredith Graves was visiting the memorial at the World Trade Center site on Dec. 22 and noticed a sign that said “No guns allowed.” The Post reports that Graves asked police where she could check her loaded pistol. She was arrested on a gun-possession charge.
Graves has a legal permit to carry a weapon in Tennessee, but New York’s gun laws are stricter.
The Post says Graves posted bond and is due back in court March 19. She faces 3½ years in prison if convicted.
“You’d think states would reciprocate with the Second Amendment. She has a license to carry in Tennessee,” her mother-in-law told the Post.
The newspaper says her attorney at Legal Aid did not return phone calls.

Seems to me that this is a matter of states rights, and we in NY – where crimes are often committed with guns from the south – have a right to have laws that make sense to us. That being said, the lady with the gun at the 9-11 memorial should be given her gun back and allowed to head home, just as a matter of hospitality.

New York is not in the habit of sending tourists (and their money) to jail, so I doubt that Miss Tennesee will do time. Of course, she can say sayonara to the gun and to a whole bunch of money.
While I’m on her side, one of the oldest of old saws is “ignorance of the law is no excuse.” When it comes to guns, cleanliness is next to godlines, but ignorance of New York law is next to impossible.
Actually Ralph the whole quote is “Ignorance of the law excuses no man; not that all men know the law; but because ’tis an excuse every man will plead, and no man can tell how to confute him.” In this case it is quite obvious she was ignorant of the law because she asked a cop where she could check her gun. There was obviously no mens rea so (theoretically) there was not crime.

I’ve been saying this for years. These places need to be treated like they were the bad old segregated south. You know, places where nice people don’t want to go, because “something bad might happen”.
NYC a must to avoid. Boycott it!
Better idea: Come and help change it for the better.
No such thing as an unwinnable war, as the last 20 years of trends toward firearms liberty will show us.
I’m only going to NYC to eat at the Jewish and Italian delis and, to visit the museums and bookstores. Oh and have a dinner or two with my sister, the kids, and her rabbi husband.
Mr. Lion, I’m a native New Yorker. I was born and raised there, so it’s my home town. I go back once in a while to visit friends and for the bagels, but not very often. Just like I didn’t visit Russia when it was the enemy, I don’t see the benefit to visiting New York.
I’d love to change New York City, but it’s impossible. New York hasn’t changed very in over 100 years, when it banned guns to keep Italian immigrants helpless against the Irish mobs. The only difference is that now, the City keeps everybody helpless.
Nothing’s impossible. Hard, sure. Measured in decades if not generations, probably. However, with stuff like Heller and the fairly massive shift in public opinion lately, I don’t see it as impossible. Enemies of freedom aren’t going to give up any time soon, nor should the home team.
There are such things as unwinnable wars, like the war on drugs, Vietnam, the Cold War, Obama’s secret war on religion, the war on brown pants with black socks.
I will let Mr Lion lead the charge on NYC. We have enough stupid gun laws on the National Level and State Level to battle. I avoid stupid places like NYC and Chicago and I like to hit them in the pocketbook. I give my tax and spending money to more worthy places.
The Bloombergs of New Yaawk and the Christers of the South are equally petty, repressed, and brutish.
The Right to Keep and Bear Arms is protected in the US Constitution. It is a fundamental right. It is not a so-called state right. State and local government’s don’t have rights, they have powers, people have rights. There is much violation by the federal, state, and local governments of our right to keep and bear arms.
Ignorance and bigotry is no excuse for anti-gun laws. The victim should have her gun returned and be allowed to be on her way.
