OMG! Skaters Skate After Shooting! OMG!

"Crowds lined up and packed the Bryant Park skating rink Saturday night, seemingly unfazed by a violent attack a week earlier." (picture and caption courtesy nytimes.com)

“The line outside the Bryant Park skating rink on Saturday night was at least 100 deep, the soon-to-be skaters waiting their turn as a seemingly endless flow of people circumambulated the ice, racing, kissing, all bathed in a pink light,” Julie Turkewitz reports at nytimes.com. And this is a story because . . . ? “Any evidence of the violent episode from a week ago had long since been removed, and with it went any apparent concern of further violence.” nydailynews.com was there first: “More than 2,500 guests filled the Midtown park on Sunday afternoon, only hours after a gunman wounded a 14-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man.” Oh yeah, life goes on, long after the thrill of a shooting is gone. “‘This is New York,’ said Oscar Collymore, 59, a security guard employed by Bryant Park Corporation. ‘A shooting doesn’t drive away the public.'” Unless, of course, an area becomes known as dangerous. Like Beirut back in the day. Or the East New York section of Brooklyn. Even then, what are you going to do? Get a gun? As if. If only.

  1. Only a matter of time before just saying “Gun” will initiate a “Shelter in Place”.

  2. A report written by government enforcers detailing the government enforcers’ response to and assessment of an incident that serves the interest of the government enforcers’ overlords. Yup, I’m sure there’s nothing but truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth in that report.

  3. Circumambulate. That’s what I’ll do. Right after I confiscate that reporter’s thesaurus for gross misuse of synonyms. Nobody needs that many syllables in a word.
