This kinda stuff drives Nick crazy: “new” guns that are evolutions (or slight modifications) of old guns. In some cases it’s porcine make-up. In other cases it’s lipstick on Anna Bauman. I reckon Del-Ton’s DTI Evolution errs on the side of Israeli models, and not just because ANY AR you can buy or own is a babe these days. The $1300 Evo’s got everything I want in an AR and nothing more, save an optic, sling and a lower price. From the product page: “The DTI Evolution has a 16″ Mid-Length CMV chrome lined barrel with 1×9 twist and a lightweight profile. I would prefer 1:8 or 1:7, but yes other than that sounds great…after you take $200 off.
A-yup. Up till a month ago, I was building essentially this (with 1:7) for friends in the $900-1K range. Now, this Del-Ton might be a fairly good deal. I hit a gun show on Saturday and what ARs there were available were in the $1500-2500 range. Heck, someone was selling a stock M&P 15 MOE for $2500 (don’t know if they got the asking price). Would be interesting to see if it actually hits the market at $1300 when available.
Don’t hold your breath waiting for a $1300 MSRP. Ruger SR-556s are selling at gun shows for over $2k, and even no-name ARs start at $1300 without any of the upgrades this one’s got. If they ever show up, these Del-Tons will be $1600-1800.

I still think they’ll go for more like $2000 if they hit the market while buyers are still acting are like they are today.

The Samson parts are good. I prefer the Stag 3G version which, at exactly the same price, offers an 18″ stainless target barrel, rifle-length gas system, and Geiselle 3G trigger. Not that this product should affect your choices: Stag has announced a 12-month expected delay before all present orders can be filled.
And to think I just bought a DPMS for $1300 🙁

Any AR-class rifle that’s actually available to purchase through the sales channels right now is worth whatever buyers are willing to pay for it. I’ll be shocked if these end up going for $1300. Try $2000.
After a hundred years of cranking out 1911s and over 50 years of ARs, you’d think that the gun industry would be able to demonstrate at least a little creativity. But no. We get old wine in new bottles. I think that an original idea in this industry would die of loneliness.

I thought (and still think) that the design of the AR57 upper was pretty darned inventive from the moment I saw it. Those guys totally inverted the operational design of the whole weapons system, from putting the magazine on top to repurposing the AR magwell as an ejection port.
While the M41A pulse rifle (Aliens) is an obvious next step, if you want REAL inventiveness you’ll have to go to the not-yet-possible-to-build MP35 rifle from John Scalzi’s Old Man’s War. 🙂
I’m nonplussed, Ralph. 157 years after the creation of the first cartridge-loading revolvers you still find high-quality ‘evolutions’ of the item attractive. Why should it be different for those of us (you were part of this ‘us’ I believe) who drilled with the AR style action in Basic and then used them in war: The positioning of the controls, firing characteristics, and maintenance procedures, are all so deeply instilled that the skills are durable. A small evolution now and then suffices. Want change? Buy a new upper. Add a thinned-out Grade III walnut stock. Paint it purple.
