Lots of readers here express amazement that those of us who carry don’t also pack an extra magazines. But face it: most carriers don’t pack a spare. They’re bulky, heavy and kind of a PITA.

If you choose to carry a backup, there’s the question of how best to do it. If you carry a mouse gun, you might let the spare mag rattle around in your pocket. Or you could use a dedicated magazine holsterCraig A Wildfeuer Jr keeps his handy in his pocket with a magnetic NeoMag clip (I have one, they’re great).

If you carry a backup, how do you do it?

  1. I haven’t tried the Neomag, I use Snagmag instead because it covers the feed lips. Just my two cents.

  2. I stitched it a double mag pouch into my off hand pocket. Two Glock 17 mags with +5 Extensions. If I can’t get by with 60 rounds…..

  3. I use a Kydex double may carrier, it counter weights the weight of the pistol. This makes for a more comfortable package.

  4. I don’t always CCW a spare magazine but when I do for my Walther PPS I use a Kytex brand magazine carrier.

  5. My CCW has a 12 round capacity. One of the reasons I bought it so I wouldn’t ned to carry an extra mag.

  6. The three most useless things in a gunfight are;

    1) The bullet that missed your target.

    2) The cover you are not behind.

    3) The spare ammo you left at home.

  7. For me its simple.
    I use a Black Arch horizontal mag carrier. Black leather with matching black leather 1.75 inch gun belt blends right in and weighs next to nothing. 10 or 15 rounds in a double wide. 8 rounds in the single. Depending on if Im carrying my PPQ-SC or my Sig P938.

  8. Ive ALWAYS carried a reload. Easy-peasy, just slip the extra mag into my offhand pocket next to my phone. Its in an otter box so it doesn’t get beat up, and it stays up right ready to go. Revolvers are trickier, as I reload with the speedloader in my right hand, so I would keep them in my right pocket and would have to rearrange where,my keys and such go. I don’t carry a revolver much anymore though.

  9. Kydex extra mag carrier for any of the 3 I carry, full size (OWB) or compact/subcompact (AIWB) and a spare one in my cargo pocket or at the very least, my EDC pack and more in the truck (along with the rifle and shotgun… it’s montana… never know amiright?)

    Basically I always have at least 30 rounds on me even with the subcompact (dual mags) and over 100 in the truck for all different guns minus the shotgun which I only have one full reload for.

    When I started carrying 10 years ago, it started with a single mag in the gun, now, I won’t leave home without a full combat load, rations, first aid, and shelter or the ability to make all of the above (except ammo which I can do at home).

    Come and take them 😉
