Warning! Booby-Trapped Ammo

“The United States has been seeding battlefields with improvised exploding ammunition, part of a large-scale project intended to undermine the Taliban that can have grisly unintended effects,” C. J. Chivers reports at atwar.blogs.nytimes.com. “Such ammunition was introduced by the United States to Afghanistan with hopes that it would explode inside the weapons of its foes. But ammunition tends to move fluidly through and around conflict zones. And once loose, booby-trapped ammunition does not distinguish between a weapon held by a Talib, a weapon held by an American soldier or a weapon held by anyone else.” What are the odds that some of that booby-trapped ammo could work its way back to the U.S.? Small. But you won’t see me buying loose ammo from abroad any time soon. Just sayin’ . . . [Click here for video of booby-trapped weapons and ammo]

  1. My grand dad told me both sides made improvised hand grenades in the Spanish American War. They wrapped nails to a throwing stick along with a stick of Dynamite and some nails or scarp iron. Some got thrown in the opposing sides fortifications with out the fuse being lit. So the other side used them to throw back.

We took some under water fuse that burned very fast, sanded off the red paint and rough coating that identified it so it wasn’t accidentally used in the wrong place. I really miss him saying “rough, red and rapid”, with his stutter that described the fuse.

The built up the grenades with the very fast burning fuse and thew them in unlit in the Spanish fortification guaranteeing killing two of the enemy when they tried to use it. The one that was going to throw it and the one that lit the fuse.

I expect booby trapped ammo and weapons go back to the stone age

  2. I guess, if you can’t ban M855, you can just scare people off of ammo with a tactic that can’t possibly be useful… There is no way this will actually help in combat.

Scales, they exist. Weigh your ammo. If one is way off… Sure, it won’t help if a faster burning powder, etc…

    Just wait until L
