Self-Defense Tip: On-Body Carry or Nothing

Robert Farago - comments No comments

Have you ever watched a woman fishing through her bag for a bit of lippy? Imagine someone trying to get a gun out of a handbag in an emergency. If the gat’s not in a holster inside the bag, purse carry could be even more, shall we say, counterproductive. Sure, the holster folk make purpose-built handbags with secret gun compartments. An owner can slip her hand into the bag quickly and easily and either extract the weapon or fire it through the material. Which still leaves two problems A) Prada doesn’t make one (at least a functional version) and B) bag snatchers. As our off-duty cop above will attest. Oh and another issue: forgetful owners who inadvertently abandon their bag. And another: curious kids. Nope. No way ’round it. On body carry is the only way to go. That applies to you briefcase schleppers too.

  1. I think it is a stereotype from the ’60s that hippies are not into guns. I’ve seen hippie chicks in Portland buying shotguns and snubbies. Hippies that live in the PNW who grow marijuana own ARs.

  2. Carrying in your purse or computer bag or brief case does nothing other than reward a thief with a gun besides your other valuables.

I’ve seen many security videos of thieves knocking a woman in the back of the head and grabbing their purse, running off before she can realize what’s happening.

That’s why I ask my wife to alway carry on person, don’t reward the criminal with a gun.

  3. Good God, is this the level of professionalism required to get a column at one of these rags? They can’t do a basis internet search to clarify who this American “Oleg Volk” is? Nice work Oleg! I thought those photos looked like his shots.

    • Mr. Volk has several RKBA posters on his website that I think are accessible to liberal thinkers. For example, a pregnant woman with a pistol, and the caption “Can’t run. Shouldn’t have to.” And one featuring a wheelchair-bound man carrying (I forget the caption). Perhaps as many of us TTAG readers as possible should emulate this campaign in Washington. Print out the pictures/captions that you think would resonate with middle-of-the-road voters in your community, and start posting and leaving them around. What do you think? Worth a try?

  5. Nice charm bracelet. I think it’s upside down though.
Me noticing her jewelry doesn’t make me gay, not that there’s anything wrong with that…..

There is one significant difference, we choose to be people of the gun. The only people that choose to be gay are those that are secretly bi, but choose their gay side over their straight side. I know, I’m being facetious, sorta.

  7. I can give you an exact day when the defication will hit the ventilation in NY: the first time Cuomo’s stazi try to confiscate someone’s gun who failed to register it in compliance with that great lie – the NYS SAFE Act.

  8. In my state, it’s a big no no to carry into any school. If you are a school employee, different rules apply, and I think involves written permission if you are a CCP holder.

  9. Kansas allows their permit holders to carry in schools like this unless the school posts otherwise. Kansas sign posting requirements are extremely specific and thorough (sign at least 8×8 inches, four-six feet off of ground, etc etc):

If this guy had a CCW, the case will turn on whether the school had the proper signage size, color, at the right height, etc. Of course, he’ll likely be fired regardless, but if the signs aren’t correct, he’ll keep his permit and won’t go to jail.

  10. …”Sept. 11, 2011 with their throats cut and marijuana covering their bodies.”

Nothing suspicious about the date, or the obvious “drug related” miss-direct, or any of the other crap going on here… sigh

  11. I love the pearl-clutching going on over at Forbes.

For all those who would hyperventilate about this stuff. Cody was a law student and interested in the legal and PR ramifications of the issue. He’s less interested in perfecting the technology. Still, credit is due to Cody: He proved it possible, put it out there on the ‘net, then stood back to take the heat.

Here you have two engineers decide to start putting their talents to work on Cody’s design, and what do we get? About what I expect. Rifling, and multiple shots per firearm. Oh, and a reduction in the barrier to entry.

For all those pearl-clutching journalists out there, here’s a thought to sleep on:

There’s nothing you can do to stop engineers from rapidly innovating this technology now. If I had the time, I’d be playing with this stuff too, but I don’t. Besides, I’m hardly the only engineer (or retired engineer) who likes to make and experiment with guns. There’s thousands of gun tech/hobby engineers in the US, doing everything from gunsmithing to metallurgy to programming CNC machines to crank out high quality guns in quantity. They’re in every sector of the gun market, from benchrest shooting, to making increasingly effective suppressors, to better ammunition and more accurate (or lethal) projectiles, better concealable handguns, you name it.

So for those who have been losing sleep over the issue of 3D printing of guns: You might now want to start stocking up on Depends[tm]. Cody’s proof-of-concept has attracted the attention of the serious gun technology nerds, and now the advances will start in earnest.

  12. For those talking about leaving CO. Don’t it until you at least try to turn the tide back. leaving just ensures it is handed over to the gun grabbers. As a resident of the hopelessly gun grabbing NJ (since 1965), I can tell you that once the rot is set in, it cannot be turned back easily. You have a one or two election window to make a difference. Please try!
