“People are buying guns as part of the American dream of freedom and liberty. And also, the hope and the dream of being able to use guns in self-defence.” – economics professor Jurgen Brauer in Sex, guns and ammo: inside the world’s largest gun industry trade fair [at theguardian.com]
One does not “hope” to use guns for self defense in a similar way to one hopes that they never need to use a spare and a jack when they get a flat; You’re glad they are there, but it’s not a good situation by any means.
“One does not “hope” to use guns for self defense”
Some do. Generally the younger among us. Most of us only slowly come around to understanding what a big deal it would be to kill someone, especially within a civilian context.
Unfortunately this is correct but it’s not immoral or stupid or wrong and it’s not to be looked down on. Being young and aggressive isn’t bad, it’s just human development, especially for males. If you make it through being young and dumb and full of… well you know, then you might just make it to be old and wise and weak. The way the young make it to old is by living that long and the psyche that does that best is the aggressive type that would be excited to have the chance to so unambiguously win. As the mind and body mature so does the aggressiveness mature into the stalwart independence that characterizes the most dangerous old men that one could choose to mess with (I’m thinking of my dad here, even while dying he was still the toughest man I ever knew, as I bet many of you are).
So here’s to the youth. May they make it to be the elderly and may they be as mean and nasty as they need to be to do it.
I can give you that. There is a huge difference between starting a fight and winning a fight though. One should choose the battles they start carefully but not be afraid to finish ones that are foisted on them.
“So here’s to the youth. May they make it to be the elderly and may they be as mean and nasty as they need to be to do it.”
Hell, that’s easy.
Just ask Ralph… 🙂
I have to respectfully disagree with you, meccastreisand. Being ready, willing and able to use lethal force if and when it is justified is of course a very good thing. But WANTING to use lethal force against another human being is very much immoral, stupid and wrong and it is to be looked down on. It’s part of the reason so many young men, especially minority young men, are in prison. It’s part of why Muslim young men so willingly embrace terrorism. It’s part of why so many cops are doing bad shoots. It plays right into the anti-gunner’s rhetoric, which hurts the pro-gun movement.
Wanting to use a gun in self-defense legally negates the claim of self-defense. It is an oxymoron.
I’d say going to use a gun in self-defense is an oxymoron.
Wanting to use a gun (as opposed to, say, a randomly grabbed blunt object) in self-defense, should the need arise, I read more as desiring to have the best tool in hand for a regrettable but necessary job
initially, maybe, but even the younger gun owners start to understand that, while defending yourself is a good thing, there is still someone dead at your hands. And even if they deserved it, you have to live with it. Those that have been around long enough see the gun like we see the fire extinguisher in our kitchen. It’s good to have, but hope we never have to use it.
One hopes to be able to use guns in self-defense (should the need ever arise).
So this is one of The Guardian journalists that wasn’t kicked out of SHOT?
Watched the video, this idiot trying to shoulder a rifle is hilarity. That being said, the staff there really did the right thing and stonewalled them out the door. There’s a difference between reporting and carrying an agenda. It’s also amusing they had to work Obama’s tears into it as well.
The moron keeps saying “Smith & WESTON”. Modern journalism at its finest!
How about that troll in the comments… It’s actually kinda funny reading it’s post’s.
Thanks for the link.
If the hat wasn’t enough, he should have been kicked out for that shiteating grin. ‘Sir, if you don’t put your lowers back in we’re going to have to ask you to leave.’
The more I think/read about defensive gun uses, the more I pray I NEVER have to experience one. Interestingly, I also become more convinced to be prepared.
I don’t hope, nor dream, that my family will ever have to use my life insurance, but I’m glad I have it, just in case.
So much fail n that linked article. Guns don’t cause crime, gun sales increasing didn’t cause mass shootings, guns don’t increase suicide or injury…. So very much fail.
More “behind enemy lines” reporting from pansy land. You’re telling me these people fought the Nazis? What did they do, cower them to death?
You must keep in mind the culture of England, especially at WW2. King and country trumped personal interest (because the populace were/are subjects). There was a notable number of famous names in England who did not think Nazis were doing wrong things…rumor was that even the king at the moment (he resigned) was a fan of the top Nazi. England had a mutual defense pact with France (note England, and the rest of the “free world” did not think Nazi invasion of Poland and Eastern Europe were worth much sweat). Once France was overrun, and the English Army chased out of Europe, the British royalty was very much afraid of being overthrown by the Nazis. THEN, the English, dragooned to save the monarchy, fought back with a fury. It was all about royalty and subjects. The English did not change after our revolution; they remained monarchists to the core.
Citizens and subjects are not interchangeable, regardless of a shared language.
It would appear that the pathetic eurocowboy is a descendent of the hun.

Twit is right out of the Obumer school of the “intellectual”. Fortunately the good old US gave him a green card so he can spread his bilge here. Georgia Regents University
what’s he hiding behind that ridiculous beard and the goofy hat?
Everyone should hope and dream to have a PhD. Mastery of any particular scholarly discipline doesn’t matter, because a doctorate in one field automatically confers expertise in all others. For example, an economist practicing psychoanalysis.
Yet another anti-gunner projecting his or her weaknesses onto the rest of us.
I hope he didn’t tip the photographer at Sears for that picture. Yeehaw.
Juergen is naive (fortunately for us). It is not defensive gun use we are thinking about it is offensive.
Yeah. I’m just itchin’ to shoot a burglar. Idiot.
Young “Rupert” is an invited guest who can’t follow his host’s rules and wonders why he is escorted out?
I can understand that coming from a millenial who thinks a pellet rifle with a scope is “scary”.
Stereotyping to fit the narrative he’s promoting. I thought the lib types said that was a frowned upon practice?
Approved descrimination, much?
My reasons for owning guns? They are fun; everything else comes after that.
Its like owning a baseball bat, because you play rec baseball, and then also keeping it under the bed.
The Guardian didn’t open up the comments area for this article. Just as well, the Guardian discussions are moderated by some of the most sensitive snowflakes ever.
the hope and the dream of being able to use guns in self-defence.” –
Just because I have legal hopes and dreams of using guns in defense does not necessarily I want to shoot someone.
I think a lot of people in a lot of other countries have legal hopes and dreams of using guns in defense.
In many countries it is illegal to use guns for self defense or even have guns in private possession.
A lot of people in a lot of foreign countries *HAD* hopes of being able to use a gun in self defense. Just before they were murdered, by terrorists or by their own government.
And also, the hope and the dream of being able to use guns in self-defence.” –
Actually in many ways I do hope people use guns in self-defence so that bad guys know the bullets fly both ways.
The ole 78 times more likely to commit suicide with a gun than stop a felon line. Yep you gotta have that stat…cause your government is soooo concerned about your welfare they’ll seize your guns, you know to protect you from yourself.
Well Guardian, expanding word count so ya get paid crap article ….it’s none of government or others business, if I decide to leave this world by smoking my 9.
When it comes to a DGU, I realize I have input on the decision making process as to whether it will be needed. That is up to the criminal or terrorist. My only input is the outcome.
“And also, the hope and the dream of being able to use guns in self-defense.”
Man, this guy nailed it.
I lay my head down at night and often dream about risking my life in a gunfight and the possibility of taking someone else’s life. Then subsequently, dealing with police and investigators questing me. Oh, and don’t forget throwing tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of dollars down on an attorney and bail to keep my a$$ out of jail. Then hoping and praying a grand jury chooses to moves forward with charges, so I can defend my life in a court room, spending even more money. And maybe end up convicted, wherein I can go to prison, never seeing my past life or family again… And if I’m really, really lucky, I’ll have a new cellmate/wife named Rosco who knows how to treat a guy like me. And we can be together forever, or at least until one of us shanks the other over who gets top bunk.
Yeppers, I’ll always hoping the stars line up on that All American love story.
I won’t read the article because I don’t want to give them clicks. Why the frack is sex even in the title? What the hell does that even have to do with guns? I’m really ting to figure thay out. Everything with these leftists is about sex. They must have gone to the college of making shit up. It’s also why I won’t purse any further degrees in psychology. Too many people seemed to like ti makr shit up without evidence to back up their hypothesis. Unless they were mentioning the porn convention, then I got it.
The article begins by interviewing a couple from “Witchita (sic),” who maintain a Pinterest page named “Firearms = LOVE,” which is supposed to support the sex reference. Farther down, the author describes SHOT Show vendor booths as featuring “professional models” and “favourite women” endorsing their products. Lastly, they mention a vendor-sponsored after-party at a local strip club, all to reinforce the notion that “sex sells.” There you have it, courtesy of my click.
Judging by the so-called reporting I’m betting these two “journalists” got confused because the AVN awards were in town the same time. They assumed that the scantily clad porn stars running around the Strip were related to SHOT.
You “hope and dream” that ANY pathetic loser would read your drivel and actually atribute anything meaningful to it… yeah, we got you.
One of the favorite attacks of the antis is that we are itching to shoot somebody. I see it all the time in reader comments in the media. This how they think of us. But I think it goes deeper than that. They are frightened of us because we carry the tools that are capable of taking a life. We are ready, if need be, to take a life, even if in defense of our own, or others. They cannot accept that people like us exist, because they are incapable of the same, whether due to a gun phobia, or righteous outrage of killing for any reason. We are alien beings to them, deserving of their contempt at our perceived inhumanity. This is why they will never stop, no matter how small their numbers. We must always be soldiers for the cause, because we will never win the war, only most of the battles.
So, this Hull College of Business professor has some research behind his work or is he merely blowing partisan smoke, knowing that it will be gobbled up uncritically by the America hating European left?
Sorry I’m not linking up for page views. Honestly why do they give out press credentials to whiney boys like this?
the hope and the dream of being able to use guns in self-defence
Bullsh!t. My hope and dream is to be able to find a few bricks of 22s for a reasonable price and maybe a Royal Blue Colt Python for under two grand.
Nope, not clicking on that pile of crap.
My only hope and dream right now is I get my form 1 approved to SBR my lower by April and Silencer Shop gets more cans back in stock before 41F in July.
That… is a super manly hat.
“In an email to the reporters, the NSSF requested they have an escort at SHOT Show before they arrived. Ryan and Neate registered, went to the press room and because it wasn’t immediately obvious where to get an escort, “we went out onto the floor to do our interviews without one,” Ryan said in an earlier email to Guns.com.”
I hope NSSF addresses that issue next year…
I Hope and Dream that nobody remembers when I used to have a hat just like that. Wait, what? Shit! Forget I said anything.
It was a different time. I was young. Everyone experimented back then, it was just a phase. That hat means nothing to me now. Really.
Does anyone know how Economists form a firing squad?
They stand in a circle facing each other.
must not stoop to ad hominem attacks.
where does this continual bloodthirsty stereotype come from? Its like asking people who buy pitts, shepards, and rotwilers if they just want them to kill people (or other dogs) couldn’t be another reason like enjoying the breeds non lethal qualities.
I was talking to someone about carrying and why i do. I don’t want to hurt anyone, but if someone wants to hurt me I have my fists, a pocket knife, and then a gun. one of these is a very effective deterrent because people tend not to risk getting shot. That seems like a decent plan to me.
I have only ever had to draw a handgun once to defend my life. I was absolutely terrified. There is nothing dreamy about that experience, and I have to believe 99% of lawful gun owners understand that well.
Yeah, dude. I really hope to use those airbags I paid for in my car, too. Every time I drive to the grocery store. And every Democrat no doubt spends all waking ours hoping to use his Obamacare.
Heh – “Sex, guns and ammo” – not surprising at all to get Lefty Spin from the Guardian, but this is lame even at their standards.
I guess after the two wannabe investigative Journolistas get kicked out on first day for breaking the terms of the agreements signed by all the press, they have to invent some thing, anything to sell to the gullible lefties at the Guardian- “dark imaginings about killing someone”.
I’d say the reporters spent their time at the stripper joint, and found this guy with the leather hat in the casino bars, and made up his quote, to help explain their travel expenses for the wasted week in Vegas.
At least they got some booth babe pics, no thanks to those seriously studious and professional press hounds at TTAG…or maybe they just cruised the internet from their room hot tub. Thanks Guns.com!
Great internet site! It looks really good! Maintain the helpful job!
