Let’s skip to the last paragraph of Do you know the gun owners in your circle? [via baltimoresun.com] and work our way back to the beginning. “Gun owners may feel picked on, but they are not a persecuted class. They are individuals who have chosen to keep in their homes an object whose chief purpose is to injure or kill, whether in self defense or otherwise. The rest of us should have a right to know it’s there before we — or our children — enter.” I don’t think that word “right” means what “contact reporter” Tricia Bishop thinks it means . . .
Ms. Bishop fails to understand that her rights end where others’ rights begin. Worse, she combines her inherently tyrannical view with white guilt and paranoia. Like this:
I’m less afraid of the criminals wielding guns in Baltimore . . . than I am by those permitted gun owners. I know how to stay out of the line of Baltimore’s illegal gunfire; I have the luxury of being white and middle class in a largely segregated city that reserves most of its shootings for poor, black neighborhoods overtaken by “the game.” The closest I typically get to the action is feeling the chest-thumping vibrations of the Foxtrot police helicopter flying overhead in pursuit of someone who might be a few streets over, but might as well be a world away. But I don’t know where the legal gun owners are or how to ensure that their children, no matter how well versed in respecting firearms, won’t one day introduce that weapon to my daughter.
Are we talking about a formal introduction or something dangerously casual? Joking aside, I fully acknowledge the possibility of the latter – which is why I’ve taught my children the four safety rules and told them what to do if one of their friends starts “playing” with a gun. Interrogating my neighbors about their firearms storage patterns prior to a play date never occurred to me. Any more than I’d ask about where they keep their household chemicals or car keys.
And so, as President Barack Obama announced plans this week to tighten background checks for gun buyers and increase gun tracking and research, I thought, that’s all well and good, but how about adding something immediately useful: a gun owner registry available to the public online — something like those for sex offenders. I’m not equating gun owners with predatory perverts, but the model is helpful here; I want a searchable database I can consult to find out whether my kid can have a play date at your house.
Ms. Bishop isn’t equating gun owners with sex offenders – only she wants society to treat them the same way. And she wants gun owners to quit whining and take their medicine. Because they choose to own guns. Which are useless for self-defense: “If I’d had a gun the one time I was the victim of a violent crime (in upstate New York), the outcome would have been a lot worse than it was, with the firearm turned against me in short order.”
Thankfully, that didn’t happen. But I’d like to turn Ms. Bishop’s words against her as she attempts to mug my gun rights. She says “the risk to owning the gun isn’t worth it to me.” I say good for you. Now leave me alone.
Do I also have to start wearing a gun patch similar to the yellow and blue jewish star patch as a gun owner? People like her are frightening.
This would be part of the end goal.
No…their end goal would be sending us to the ovens.
Exactly, the kind of hatred the left feels for people that disagree with them won’t be cured by gun control. If anything, a disarmed population would send groups like Nation of Islam and BLM marching into every American neighborhood.
Ever notice those that do not care about the Constitution always claim the rights of others are never being infringed upon?
Unless of course those others are part of a beloved minority class, and their (real or imagined) rights are being infringed by police or Christian business owners. In that case, Katy bar the door.
What would happen if we did that on our own?
Once a month, we wore the Mark of the Gun, and only associated with “our kind.”
I do at least once a month (perhaps more, I don’t keep track), and what happens is I get to hone my skills.
I’m sure the ATF would be sent in short order to deal with a militia or domestic terrorists or whatever they’d choose to describe us as…
Good point Sixpack70.
To further drive the point home, let us consider her statement with a slightly different twist:
Can you imagine the uproar if Ms. Busybody had printed that?
There would be no uproar because the 3rd wavers would circle the wagons around her. Men are a safe group to demonize. Any negative comments about what she said would be attributed to misogyny and the patriarchy.
No patch, just a holster. I know I am going to start a schmit storm, but the only way to normalize guns is to open carry. These nitwits don’t get their undies in a bunch when they see someone with a costume open carrying because it has been normalized.
She is sick she’s talking about registration. Registration is a serious move that gives the government unbelievable power, as it lets them know were every legal firearm is. Once you register your guns it’s just like telling the federal government what guns you own……… rifles, handguns, shotguns, and were you keep them. She is just a gun grabber, another one that really her agenda is to ban them all and eliminate the “second amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America” that’s her agenda.
More guncism in play. What a guncist.
Lets ostracize what overall amounts to a law abiding group of society. Funnily enough the people whom she SHOULD be afraid of (in the parts of the world that are a few blocks away and she never want to acknowledge) aren’t going to register, and according to the notion that it would incriminate them of a crime are under no legal obligation to actually register.
It is telling that even with being assaulted in some fashion in the past, she would prefer to remain helpless, powerless and defenseless in case of some future attack, because having a gun would have made it “worse”.
So she would rather be found raped, perhaps even murdererd in some back alley, or even in her home, rather than be standing over the body of a human predator with smoking gun in a holster making a report to the police.
Maybe there really has been an alien invasion, and the real human beings that are now progressives/statists have been replaced with pod people.
That is easier to believe than that people have been able to convince themselves this type of belief is anything but the utmost cowardice and the abject rejection of all that has made us, as human beings. more than just peasants, peons and slaves. More than just prey animals for the savage and the blood thirsty.
She isn’t worried about “those people,” since her children don’t mingle with them any way. As she said, Baltimore is a segregated southern style city, with distinct neighborhoods divided based on socioeconomic class. Her children probably do not attend public school. She does not travel by bus, nor do her children. She drives through “bad neighborhoods,” knowing they are there but not stopping in any of them (which in truth would probably be dangerous for her). All she wants to know is which parents of children who attend the same school her children do have guns. In a publicly available (please come steal my guns) database.
To show her empathy with the ‘lower classes’, she should adorn her car with a ‘Co-Exist’ bumper sticker and this custom paint job:
Her proposal is a criminals dream! You know exactly who is defenseless if you want to do a home invasion and you know who has guns that you can steal.
Yep, and despite the fact that she lives in a safe suburban neighborhood, evil does not recognize such things. Look at the poor doctor’s family in 2007 back in Connecticut who lived in an upscale safe area. Her dreamland vision of the world is exactly what the criminal predator wants, a safe robbery/rape/murder with no chance of losing life or limb.
Yes, that was the Petit family in Connecticut: that was one of the most horrific, tragic family rape/murders that I have ever heard. And if either the mother or the father had been armed, it would have never happened.
Note: you can call my statement victim blaming if you want. I am merely stating a fact.
No victim blaming at all. She opened the door when she made the comments: “I know how to stay out of the line of Baltimore’s illegal gunfire; I have the luxury of being white and middle class in a largely segregated city that reserves most of its shootings for poor, black neighborhoods overtaken by “the game.”
MS Bishop is a hateful person making hateful statements she has no business making.
There are many people in Baltimore and across this country who don’t have the “luxury” to live in such a unicorn-blessed world as hers.
To resurrect an old meme, How about some turnabout so she can sleep at night, and while her daughter is out playing? I suggest a government registry of all persons/households who swear that firearms will NEVER be present under any circumstances (except police presence, obviously).
This would provide her with a quick reference of where her daughter can go and play in supposed safety – as safe as any other gun free zone in the world – and by exclusion where she should NEVER allow her daughter to visit without LEO or hired (armed) security supervision. Problem solved.
I hate her. I am sorry but there’s no other way to word it. I absolutely hate sheltered people like her living with her head in the sand. And I’m tired of their whining.
They hate us with the fire of a thousand suns.
It is far past time for us to hate them back.
No more mincing words, no more being polite.
You want me to register like a sex offender, lady?
Go F— Yourself.
The responses will only get less cordial from there.
Sex offenses are a liberal pastime,I think all gun haters/grabbers should have to register for their future sex crimes and hopefully they’ll get caught for their past ones.
So she wants it to be the government’s responsibility to let her know if a home is “safe” for her kids to go over and play. God forbid she take that responsibility on herself to ask that question. She is trying to get someone else to take up for her cowardice. Her children will become cowards and her children’s children will become cowards.
This, 100 times. You wanna know if there is a gun in the person’s house? Ask him. If you don’t like the answer (or non-answer), don’t send your kid there. Too much work? Hell, let your maid/nanny/governess make the call then.
Save me government for I am unable to be a responsible adult! Oh government you are so wise and all knowing!
This is really what she meant to say.
Yet at the same time she thinks she is soooooo much smarter than the rest of us. Liberal thought is founded on schizophrenia.
Better answer; don’t let your child go anywhere! If you ask me if I have a gun, before your child can come visit mine, I’ll tell you quite clearly FOAD! Don’t even bother to ask. Things get a bit worse, I may start asking, and if you are NOT armed, keep my child at home. How are you planning to protect him?
I wonder if she would support everyone knowing her house was NOT armed?
Except my answer would be none of your business.
Don’t like that answer ?
Then don’t send your little bugger picker over.
My answer would be “Thank you for asking. Your kid isn’t worthy of entering my home or playing with my kids. Have a nice day.”
How would you protect my child during a home invasion? Not, huh? Tell your kid to get accustomed to playing all alone.
searchable database….her right to “know” who has arms, specifically so she can determine if a home is safe for a play date. Just were is that enshrined in the Constitution?
Furthermore her inability to forsee how criminals could use that database for robbery targeting neighbors who are not armed or a bureaucracy directed to confiscate on the whim of elected representatives shows The mindless collective of anti’s thought process.
She is free to start, for herself, a searchable database for homes which are *NOT* armed, will not defend themselves, with additional notation if they have female children 10 or over. That would give her all the information she desires, and if you weren’t on it, she could assume whatever she likes (since it’s voluntary), but she wouldn’t have to worry about being left out of the home invasion/rape/murder craze currently cranking up.
I keep hearing this “the gun would be turned against me” idea. If that is the case you are doing it wrong. If an attacker gets your gun it should only be useful as an awkward club because it’s empty.
My mother repeatedly tells me that its stupid to carry a gun and stupider to openly carry it because “He is just going to take it from you and shoot you.” I have tried using the smallest simplest words to explain to her that “No, Mom, he is not going to do that, because I am going to shoot him multiple times first.” Even after explaining this at least a dozen different times she STILL says this to me on a regular basis. It’s as if guns only work if you are a cop or have evil intent.
LOL! By that logic I don’t need to carry, because if some mugger approaches me with a gun I’ll just take it away from him and shoot him with it. Priceless.
From my experience, what people who use that argument (“they’ll just take it away from you”) really mean is that “they’ll just take it from me.” It doesn’t occur to them that so many of us who own and carry firearms, actually DO train on a regular basis, and DO remain situation-aware because we ARE aware of the responsibility that comes with this right. What they are saying is that if they owned a gun, it would sit in a safe, drawer or whatever and not get any exercise.
Who is it that believes a common thief has any knowledge or expertise in any form of combat? My guess is that the average mugger couldn’t hit you from 3 yards, even if he knew how to make the gun shoot.
Likely future victim of a mugging if she steps one half block into the wrong neighborhood. Or of a home invasion. Can you imagine her attempting to reason with a hoodlum?
There is zero chance she’ll ever step within ten blocks of a bad area, unless they build a Whole Foods or Ikea too close to the ‘hood.
Not true in Baltimore. Good and bad neighborhoods butt right up against one another. For example, if you drive north out of downtown, you almost immediately find yourself in a rundown neighborhood. Keep going, and that neighborhood abruptly stops pretty near the Johns Hopkins campus, and continuing on from there up St. Charles you find many large manses on both sides of the street.
Yep like any old city. New Orleans is like that. A few steps in the wrong direction and you’re in da hood.
Or her Mercedes dies in the middle of a bad neighborhood.
Lots of electronics in modern cars.
Very remote it could happen but a higher likely hood of that than my evil gun jumping out and shooting her precious.
She’s really getting thrashed in the comments. I think we may have found the poster-girl for arrogant, elitist (not to mention crypto-racist), irrational-bordering-on-hysterical gun-grabbers. To her credit, she did note that the “study” she relies on vis-à-vis the dangers of having a gun in the home was “based on anecdotal evidence”. But then, it’s kind of telling that even that tiny bit of honesty counts as “credit” in gun-related “journalism”. BTW, did you catch that this lady is, in addition to being a “contract reporter”, the paper’s “deputy editorial-page editor”?
Come get them personally, sweetheart. I triple-dog dare you.
I’ve had enough of your ilk, so please be so kind as to shut yer piehole and go away. Now.
This is some next level stupid.
Seeing as how compliance with registration worked so well in Connecticut, if that’s what she really wants she’s going to have to put up with government troops barging into her home and ransacking it to search for her guns, whether she has any or not. Seems to me we fought a war over this about 240 years ago.
Ready compliance with statist laws only comes from statists. As I mentioned above, if she wants to see anything like this work at all she will have to promote statists like herself voluntarily creating a government registry, online and searchable, of Liberal/Progressive/Statists who swear that they do not have firearms in their homes. I suspect that list would also be incomplete, but it would be a lot closer than any list of gun owners.
But as has been often noted by the “Would you put this ‘Gun Free Home’ sign in your front yard” groups, it would be amusing to see how many of those statists suddenly found a reason to defy state authority and refused to register.
Something tells me that if a team of ATF agents showed up at here door demanding to search her house for weapons she’d immediately expose her hypocrisy by screaming about her 4th Amendment rights. Which only goes to show there are very few true statists compared to a very large number of hypocrites. We all want others to leave us alone while we run everyone else’s lives. Those of us who recognize the hypocrisy in that call ourselves ‘libertarians’ or ‘conservatives’.
New Law …. ( Buzz’s Executive Action ) – All reporters / journalists must register with the Ministry Of Truth AND pass an opinion suitability background check before engaging in Free Speech . Permits will be valid only as long as I feel like it , no appeals .
They already do that. No major media publication will publish anything unless its from an approved source and follows an approved agenda.
Tricia Bishop writings are nonsensical gibberish that are nothing more than absurd. Sorry Tricia, my rights render your desires insignificant and unfeasible.
Holy wow. Does she…does she mean to sound as horrendously racist as she does? God. I cringed.
Put a sign in front of your home that says it is gun free, Ms. Bishop. If you believe so strongly, put your money where you’re big mouth is.
Go ahead and ask me I’ll tell you – not a big deal.
Oh don’t worry, someday my handsome son will introduce firearms to your daughter. By the time he’s done with her – she’ll be an NRA/GOA life member.
Uh no. Sex offenders committed a crime – simply owning a gun is not a crime. How about we make a registry of anti-gun people and make it available to the public? No?
simply owning a gun is not a crime. It soon will be in Baltimore.
actually, if the Maine Governor LePage is correct, some nice young man named D-Money is gonna introduce her daughter to the streets of Baltimore. . . . and she better have his money. I would pay to watch that show.
I’m at a loss to see how we unwind these never ending streams of agitprop after the election. This is all orchestrated, top down. Every single person on their side has the same exact talking points. Coincidence? I think not. I want to know the source of these intentionally false narratives.
@ rob g
Of course it is. The antis at the top, like Bloombag, can’t let the issue quiet down. It has to be kept on the front burner on high. Also, the more ridiculous the arguments for gun control, the more palatable tamer ideas and suggestions will seem down the road. It’s no accident that Hildabeast says ignorant things like total confiscation like in Australia is worth looking at.
It’s like saying you’re going to nuke the heck out of a country and then you drop a few cluster bombs. Oh well that wasn’t so bad. Hildabeast is going to come on like a rabid Wolverine on meth over gun control, then settle for large capacity and semi-auto rifle ban and we’re supposed to be grateful because it could have been so much worse.
It’s not going to work.
There are by some estimates at least one firearm for every US citizen. Assume that every house, every adult has, or has access to a firearm. There, done. Feel safer now? Good. No tax dollars were wasted in this public service. Buhbuye!
This is what happens when you have a database of legal gun owners- http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/25/new-york-journal-news-gun-owners-westchester-rockland-counties_n_2362530.html
a leftist newspaper publishing every gun owners address. A perfect invitation for theft and confiscation.
Speaking of public databases, someone named Trisha C Bishop about the same age as the author and who lives in the baltimore area was arrested for DUI and spent some time in jail. If is the author, do I feel safe on the road? If not, how does the author feel about mistaken identity?
Aha– I think one of the article’s commenters pointed that out …
I am sure she will say it was only a few glasses of wine that she had to cope with her issues stemming from upstate New York incident. ,. . . besides, she is white. As if the police should stop her.
That one may have ben left by me. If it is the same woman, she also lives around the corner from me. I also have a child, so do I need to worry about her driving drunk (if that is her)? The Maryland Judiciary Case Search s a gold mine of information 🙂
It is her, that’s why the Baltimore Sun has been deleting any comments referencing the DUI conviction.
Whatta hoot, they missed one early on I guess. Maybe someone should suggest a DUI-arrest database–you know, so they will know who not to put in the soccer-league/ballet-class car-pool roster? Or a home-bar-owner’s data base?
Maybe we should have a national registry of people with a DUI so we know who to trust our kids to car pool with?
And trackers on their cars so we can avoid them when we’re out and about…
So Tricia Bishop want a little list of gun owners. Well I want a list of stupid people, so I can avoid them. Because a stupid person without a gun is more dangerous than a permitted gun owner with a gun.
I wonder who’s been beating the bishop.
My response to infringment would be I’m coming and bringing hell with me.
Got to to get one of those LIKE thingies !
I can solve this “problem” quite simply: neither Ms. Bishop nor her offspring will ever be invited anywhere near my home. It’s not the thought that they might piddle on the floor – although that seems highly likely given her amorphous neurotic fear that somehow, somewhere, there might be a gun in the hands of someone *other* than a gang member, who she does not actually fear.
It’s that I don’t let crazy people like Ms. Bishop get near my family. She is delusional. If she seriously thinks that a law-abiding citizen is MORE dangerous than an inner-city Baltimore gang thug, she is so far removed from reality that she cannot be trusted with any meaningful responsibility whatsoever. She should be dismissed from her position with the newspaper unless The Sun wants to support lunatics.
“I know how to stay out of the line of Baltimore’s illegal gunfire; I have the luxury of being white and middle class in a largely segregated city that reserves most of its shootings for poor, black neighborhoods overtaken by “the game.” The closest I typically get to the action is feeling the chest-thumping vibrations of the Foxtrot police helicopter flying overhead in pursuit of someone who might be a few streets over, but might as well be a world away. “
I’m sure the Petit’s equally thought they were so insulated from the world of thugs and violent attackers.
And, the Tates. And LaBiancas.
And the list can go on.
She’s clearly delusional, and demonstrates that fact many ways in what she wrote.
Meanwhile, the rest of us choose to live in the real world.
Read this story a couple of days ago on gunfreezone.net. Funny how people like her seem to be perfectly okay with the leading cause of her hated “gun violence” (gang violence), yet the hate those who harm no one (average gun owners).
Actually her statement is false in terms of her not understanding her risk of being killed. Being a woman, Ms. Bishop is wrong to think that she has to fear ordinary gun owners. Men who kill women in intimate partner violence situations with guns have a long history of committing battery against women. They are also almost certainly sexually violent since rapists are also the batterers in the community. Men who are violent against women are found in all neighborhoods at the same rate. Homicide against women does not know any racial and economic barriers the same way homicide in say street gangs or other types of homicide in general does. There are plenty of warning signs that a man is dangerous towards women. Homicide at the hands of a violent man is avoidable which is what Ms. Bishop has to worry about as a woman.
I was introduced to firearms in boy scouts without my parents and my level of danger was quite low. A firearm respecting person can introduce firearms to her daughter safely. And when she is 18 or 21 Ms. Bishop has no authority over her daughter.
As for an online data base of gun owners, this is stupid. The most common way criminals get their guns is via theft. Telling criminals who has guns tells them which homes they can steal guns from. If she is worried about play dates for her children, she might want to check if the parents have a swimming pool rather than guns as this poses a greater threat to her daughters safety. While she is at it, she may want to ask about the parents driving record as well, which I am certain she does not. She can always ask the parent about guns and share her worries about them with the parent of the child her daughter is playing with. She tell them not to introduce her child to guns. A responsible gun owner will honor that.
I am going out on a real limb here, but I bet the homes where she wants her kids to go play don’t have any guns in the house. . . . prescription drugs however, yeah, well can’t wait for her kid to become the class junkie. . . .
I’d wager that her kids are already doped to the gills on all manner of behavior-modification meds.
I cringe when I become aware of people like this who are so blinded that they can not see how idiotic they are.
Willfully ignorant Liberal.
Tell me, exactly, how that would have prevented the tragedies?
And tell me where registration didn’t lead to bad consequences for people?
And tell me again what “shall not be infringed” means.
How about a searchable database of households that don’t own firearms?
Works the same way.
She shouldn’t have any objections to that.
I just e-mailed her with that suggestion. Surely all her right-thinking gun-o-phobe friends would be happy to establish a “safe home” database. For the children, you know…
What is more amazing than her comments is she actually found a human being willing to reproduce with her. Scary that there is a man out there willing to put up with that kind of crazy.
Men will mate with a baboon if they could mange it.
Indeed. She’s hot enough and or he’s desperate enough are ultimately the only two factors that are needed to complete the deal.
Well the guy couldn’t “clear leather” fast enough, and had a “negligent discharge” while still “holstered”.
She doesn’t fear the criminals that she admits are armed, within blocks of her home, yet she is terrified about what the law abiding members of society may keep in their homes. What business is it of hers what I own? She’s not paying my bills. She is not in charge of my finances. She is not the executor of my will. She is only a bigoted woman that hates everyone that does not share her opinion. I pity her children to have to be forced to live with her hatred.
She and an army of democrats want to make every law possible to infringe on your right to lawfully defend yourself.
People have a tendency to know that I’m a gun owner when they walk through my door. I’m not shy about it; I wear one on my hip 95% of the time that I’m at home. But no one else needs to know. There doesn’t need to be a database or anything like that. If you’re letting your kids play at someone’s house without you, that you’ve never even been to, and that you don’t know the parents pretty well already, that in itself is a bigger problem.
I can only warn you about registering firearms. Currently in Germany they are really prosecuting legal firearms owners. They started to control weapon strage by coming to your home without a notice in advance. And they even charge you for that! They can come as often as they want, because there is nothing to regulate that. And if you don’t comply, then they try to revoce your Recently they started to discuss to forbid semiautomatic firearms in Europe. Also they discuss to expire firearms licenses after five years, so you have to renew them and this will certainly cost. So be warned against registration. It will only be the first step in taking your firearms away.
Had she not thought about how criminals obtain weapons? Stealing them seems to be the method of choice. So she wants to publish the equivalent to the “map to the stars” only for gun owners. Kinda like a menu of whats available and where. Brilliant. Let’s then publish a list of all those who oppose guns, kinda like a map of gun free zones. Then let’s see the out come.
a largely segregated city that reserves most of its shootings for poor, black neighborhoods.
So, the segregated city sanctions and approves all of its shootings to occur in the black urban environment?
Quit whining and register your printers, typewriters, URLs, onscreen user names, etc.. You’ve nothing to fear and you have nothing to hide if you’ve done nothing wrong (per today’s rules). Oh, sorry, I forgot about e-mail addresses, cell phones numbers, and wire taps.
(See: “The Lives of Others” for how the whole registration thing works.)
They are individuals who have chosen to keep in their homes an object whose chief purpose is to injure or kill,
You mean they own cars, boats, lawn mowers, knives, ovens, power saws, and motorcycles?
For my family, the issue of whether guns are in a friend’s home and if they are secured is a deal breaking question. If all weapons aren’t either locked up or holstered, our kids don’t go in that house without us. The flip side is that we know the answer to that question for any family we’d be comfortable letting our kids play without us. The author of this story doesn’t seem to have much desire to get to know the families of her kids’ friends.
If all weapons aren’t either locked up or holstered, our kids don’t go in that house without us.
Well, your kids would have no one to play with in my childhood era and area.
You would have loved my Grandparents and Great Uncles and Aunts homes. There was at one time a generation that did not tolerate the nonsense of today.
The RTKABA will survive (OUTLAST) even the idea of America. INCLUDING FOR FELONS.
You give up your gun or your RTKABA and I will get you to give up everything else.
Tricia and the Baltimore Sun HAVE GIVEN UP THEIR 1st AMENDMENT RIGHTS (which never includes the rifght of the “press” to shout down another’s “Free Speech”).
Close the Baltimore Sun and deny Tricia welfare.
MD is a rediculously F’d-up, inbred, small piss ant blue liberal/progressive/communist state, and nobody looks to them to dictate to the rest of us.
“…but how about adding something immediately useful: a gun owner registry available to the public online — something like those for sex offenders. I’m not equating gun owners with predatory perverts, but the model is helpful here; I want a searchable database I can consult to find out whether my kid can have a play date at your house…”
Are you going say that doing this is NOTHING like making Jew’s in 1930’s Germany be registered. Please, don’t be a bigot.
I’m less afraid of the criminals wielding guns in Baltimore . . . than I am by those permitted gun owners.
Do not worry, there probably are no permitted gun owners in Baltimore except for LEO licker carve outs.
Did anyone mention the inverse? Non-gun owners should be forced to register, so criminals can attack them with greater confidence.
I thought I had seen some abjectly pathetic racism before this, but this Tricia Bishop woman sets the bar to a new low. Her gloating over her white privilege safety makes me feel outraged, disgusted and soiled all at the same time.
very few people are more racist, misogynist, and generally mean-spirited than doctrinaire liberals.
It took guns to un-fu<k America from people like Trish, and The baltimore suns-a-bitches 230+ years ago, and it's obvious that it's going to take guns to fix it again.
GIVE UP YOUR GUNS MD, AND SURRENDER QUIETLY. YOU CAN KILL YOUR KIDS FIRST IF YOU'RE SCARED ABOUT HOW SOMEONE WITH A GUN MIGHT DO IT.
Register your abortion tools. Half the parties involved are killed, and you’re cool with that.
If that’s needed and justifiable, you don’t get to say shit about anything else you fu<king monster.
Just another woefully PC liberal BooHooer.
Unfortunately with a newspaper column.
Who’s right to write her drivel is protected by mine to own a gun.
Mind your business lady and I will mind mine.
We gotta start registering Liberals… or develop a Liberal by back program so we just get rid of them
I’ll compromise with her – How about a publicly accessible database of people who DO NOT have a gun in there home?
Not a lot of legal gun owners walking around Baltimore. Seems like a drunk driving be-otch is more of a danger than law-abiding folks with carry permits. What do I know(my son lives nearby and loves Maryland-’cause he’s got cops as neighbors…sigh.
Ms. Bishop has been arrested for a DWI something that kills thousands of Americans each year, Men, Women and Children ………. see were I’m going with this.
I looked up elitist in the dictionary and found a small, cross hatched likeness of Ms. Bishop.
Conceptually, she makes Shannon Watts look like Annie Oakley.
I have the luxury of being white and middle class in a largely segregated city that reserves most of its shootings for poor, black neighborhoods overtaken by “the game.”
I did not know that cities had a “death by gunshot” quota they had to enforce.
I hope this is cosmetic enough for you since you do right for a liberal rag of a newspaper, Eat a fat one! Lmao!
All victims thought the same before victimized. She makes it seem like somehow that gunfire across the street will never connect with her over-evolved brain as a so called civilized animal
Yet our grandfathers GAVE them the vote just for the remote prospect of getting a little.
I have no objection to her checking that database before allowing her precious to go play. I think that’s just fine. But I won’t put my name in it, and no one else will, either. Therefore, we have a win-win situation, she feels safe and affects me not at all.
I think every convicted DUI OR DUII person should have a SPECIAL BEACON and marker, if allowed to continue or return to driving
( like a pizza delivery car has on the roof) to notify other drivers, besides a sign on their door posting (so my kids will avoid the house and won’t ride with them) that the occupant is careless with their own life and the lives of anybody they might come in contact.
Stop whining and leave me the frack alone?
With Trump’s campaign wet-blanketing campaign $ spending, “press” organizations need to make their bones by publishing their stupid opinions (that people haven’t beaten out of them) an hope that it gets some play here to attempt to maintain relevance.
It pains me to tell her this because it will point out the ignorance of her remarks about gun registration, but EVERY time a person buys a gun from a gun dealer, there is what is called an ATF Form 4473 which must be filed with the gun dealer. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms requires that dealers have these forms available for inspection by the BATF agents “at will”. Historically, when dealers get a visit from their friendly BATF agents, they make copies of every 4473. They aren’t supposed to do this, but they do. So there is your gun registration. The federal government knows where every gun sold in the US is located, as well as the make, type, caliber and serial number. What more does this woman want? Licensed gun owners are not the cause of gun violence. It is the criminals and psychopaths and fanatics that are the problem. Since the gun laws now in existence don’t seem to work, why not target the source of the problem?
No, they don’t, really. Not at all. And they don’t need to know where the legally bought and sold gus are.
But not all guns are sold through dealers. The 7743 is only for first sales. Lots of firearms especially C&R’s and antiques are sold without and 7743 or background checks. If government registration or (God and an informed electorate forbids it) should ever happen, I’ll bet there’s no way the gov will be no getting back all those CMP M1’s.
I almost have to call this one total click bait on the part of the paper she writes for. I have no doubt people this do exist, but to write something this ironically nonsensical and genuinely racist and publish it, it’s gotta be stunt.
The comments section is excellent, though. She’s getting torn to pieces.
“I know how to stay out of the line of Baltimore’s illegal gunfire; I have the luxury of being white and middle class in a largely segregated city that reserves most of its shootings for poor, black neighborhoods overtaken by “the game.”
So, what she’s really upset about is that being an elitist bigot no longer keeps her safe? How did this sentence fly past the PC editor?
Here’s one for Mrs Bishop.:
Being from MD myself, living roughly 15 minutes outside the city limits, and being a proud gun owner, i’d like to apologize to everyone for the gun-grabber sludge that just oozes from this disgusting witch’ mouth. Not all Marylanders are bat sh*t crazy like this tool of a woman.
Given my proximity to this woman and many who share her opinion I’m giving serious thought to taking out a full page, or perhaps two page ad in the Baltimore Sun to post an open letter in response to her article. I’m willing to include comments from anyone here who has an comment they’d like her to see.
“Ms. Bishop isn’t equating gun owners with sex offenders”
and the antis wonder why we will never trust them.
It is all stick and no carrot with them.
They might sway some people if they walked softly but they let it bleed through as they froth at the mouth every time some unfortunate event takes place exactly how they feel about us.
“I’m less afraid of the criminals wielding guns in Baltimore . . . than I am by those permitted gun owners. I know how to stay out of the line of Baltimore’s illegal gunfire; I have the luxury of being white and middle class in a largely segregated city that reserves most of its shootings for poor, black neighborhoods overtaken by “the game.” “
So, you’re fine behind your moat. As for the proles who can’t get out that way … screw em.
Or, did I miss something?
Oh, yeah, I did. So in this article:
– Violence is a problem. So, maybe we should take that as a given: Yeah, there’s violence, and the objects of violence don’t generally like that much. OK, I buy that.
– Author-person did something about that, to make herself safe. So, a person ought to be able to do something about being at risk of violence. Good enough.
– She fled to where the nice people are, the irony of which is practically a deadly weapon. So, she did what she could, and what she chose to do to protect herself and the people she cares about. Well, and fine.
The problem seems to be, if you don’t solve the problem of being a potential victim the way she did, that’s not OK.
The larger problem seems to be that making her happy takes more than her not being assaulted. She doesn’t want to be reminded that it’s out there.
The largest problem is her solution is that, “Big Daddy” has to step on what other people want to do, to make the world at least appear the way she wants it to be.
Let me translate this: “I moved out, and it turns out some of that icky reality is still around. So, fix it.”
Oh, yeah, I did miss something. It’s even worse than “screw-em.”
So, she moved away from where “those people” are to get away from all the ick. Now, it seems “they” is a bigger group than she thought, and some of them are where she is.
Really, her nice ‘burb has been invaded by gang-bangers? Drug corridors?
I think her problem is somewhat bigger than criminals doing criminal things. It’s T H E M.
Wait to be a eletist, hoplaphobic, liberal Ms. Bishop. Which is the party of tolerance now?
I have a right to protect myself from idiots. I demand that all Democrats, Progressives and Socialists get registered in a national database that can be accessed by all citizens. In cases of heavy concentration, Google Maps needs to have an option of how to avoid those areas.
At this point, I’m inclined to state that an anti-gun Leftist with an agenda like Ms. Bishop is more dangerous to me than an armed criminal. Notably, because I can shoot the criminal if he/she attempts to harm me.
No worries, she’s working hard to make sure that her white privilege will soon run out…
Didn’t the Washington Post just run another stupid column close to the same thing? I’d like to know how registering my firearms teaches her children to know the danger of unsecured firearms, and to keep their grubby little hands off other people’s stuff! I don’t know how she lives with all that white guilt. I guess that’s what boxed wine is for.
Apparently, ever since she had that problem with the boxed wine, she’s trying to shove her guilt onto others. What a sorry case for a humanoid.
ok – so she is a PROHIBTED PERSON and she wants to make sure the rest of us are disarmed. Just like her. . . . Classic.
Well, at least we know where she lives. . . . and that there are no guns there. just saying.
Curious…perhaps she would be okay with a similar searchable list of all working journalists that includes their personal political persuasions in every category. This would include their voting record.
Or would that perhaps…maybe…violate the whole “not abridging the freedom of the press” thing?
So it’s the city that has allocated the shootings to the poor neighborhoods? How…? I mean… WTF? Does she actually believe that the shootings in poor neighborhoods are being inflicted upon those neighborhoods from outside of them?
My first comment on this blog. What a worthless patch of h**r. I hope she likes her slice of nirvana in that cesspool known as Baltimore. Oh ,by the way Tricia, it is none of your business if I have guns. And your kid’s are welcome at my home to get some common sense values and morals. Anytime.
I wouldn’t suggest inviting her kids – they are most likely genetically defective. The seriousness of her defects take at least several generations to mature.
Who’s whining? I’m pretty sure most of us are flying the “one finger flag” with the letters “F” and “O” on it.
“I know how to stay out of the line of Baltimore’s illegal gunfire; I have the luxury of being white and middle class in a largely segregated city that reserves most of its shootings for poor, black neighborhoods overtaken by “the game.” ”
That’s the most racist piece of shit writing I’ve read from a reporter in many a decade.
Ms. Bishop, you can kiss my beautiful black ass.
Progressive hypocrisy at its finest. She starts off with the premise that violence in her city is the problem of poor black folks. If one of us said that, she would be screaming “Racist!” along with her ilk. But since she said it, it’s not racist.
As for her calls for a searchable database of gun owners, I say it’s time to woman-up. If you’re terrified of your kids being in a house with a gun, then it’s your responsibility as a parent to ask the other parent. Yes, the conversation may be uncomfortable. Yes, she may have to admit her bias when she tells the other parent her kid isn’t allowed to come over to their gun-filled deathtrap of a home. Welcome to parenthood: you do what you have to do for your kids’ sake. One wonders what she does now in this awful world where she can’t use the Internet to find out who has a gun. Does she insist on hosting all play dates? Or does she just tell herself that none of the rich white Progressives in her neighborhood would ever have a gun in their home?
Don’t be surprised if she owns a gun; it’s just that writing against guns pays better.
But as a convicted felon with a felony level drunk driving conviction, doesn’t that gun of hers make her a felon in possession?? Which is also a state and federal felony.
It is most common to see those beating their chest the most to have skeletons in their closets. She’s no exception. In fact, her conviction for DWI shows that she’s an irresponsible person. Naturally, she expects everyone else to be irresponsible, as she can’t image or allow others to be better than she.
We should register drunk drivers and put their names in a searchable database on the Internet! I don’t want my kid getting in a car with a drunk driver. I should be able to Google it so that I don’t have to ask and have an awkward conversation. For the children… of course.
I keep writing emails to Chevrolet, asking for a free Corvette. For some reason, it isn’t happening.
I guess we can’t have everything we want, Ms. Bishop.
I would quote to her the words of famous philospher Zach de la Rocha: “F**k you. I won’t do what you tell me.”
Wow. So, according to Ms. Bishop, racial segregation and “white privilege” are good things because guns?!?! They will say anything to infringe upon the individual right to keep and bear arms. What a wagon load of hypocrites.
I’m less afraid of the criminals wielding guns than I am of urban self-centered, elitist journalists who have no regard of respect for the Constitution, the Second amendment or gun owners privacy rights. You claim that “The rest of us should have a right to know it’s there”. But you TOTALLY fail to say where this “right” comes from. What you really have is a snoopy invasive desire that you parade as a “right”.
Like you, I too know how to either stay out of the line of illegal gunfire or react appropriately with force in self defense. Unlike you, I don’t know how to protect myself from irresponsible journalists who call for clearly illegal and unconstitutional so called “common sense gun control measures”. Your claimed right to know is just another “common-sense” scam based on little logic to acheive highly uncertain benefits.
I too have the luxury of being white and middle class in a largely segregated city. Unlike some crypto-racist journalists, I believe that law abiding individuals of any race, blacks, whites, latinos asians regardless of race or income, living black neighborhoods overtaken by gang shootings have an equal constitutional right under the Second Amendment to arm themselves for their self protection. When seconds count and the police are only minutes away, the Foxtrot police helicopter flying overhead in pursuit of someone who might be a few streets over is totally irrelevant. Except to white elitist journalists living in their white, middle class segregated cocoon.
I want know exactly where the white, urban, self-centered, elitist journalists live. I want know so I can ensure that their ingrained bigotry, won’t one day be introduce to my sons and daughters.
So we all must MUST DEMAND national legislation to tighten the irresponsible use of the First Amendment by journalists. Because irresponsible journalist and columnist have access to newspapers and other media outlets, journalists and columnist must be compelled to clearly and convincingly establish they can responsibly exercise their First Amendment rights. Without stringent background checks on journalists, their irresponsible reporting and editorializing will continue unabated.
In addition, the good of the public demands something more immediately useful; a journalist registry available to the public online. We need something like those used for sex offenders. Now I’m not equating journalists with predatory perverts, but ideas are ideas. And journalists spreading irresponsible ideas can be just as dangerous to the common good as sex offenders. I’m just saying that the sex offender model would be helpful in identifying elitist, irresponsible journalists living among us. I want a searchable database I can consult to find out the where self-centered, elitist segregationist crypt- raciest journalists are at.
Many of my relatives and their friends, my parents grew up in racist south and segragated north. My folks were taught how to deal with the clan and other bigots. But that doesn’t do much to allay my fears. It simple terrifies me that crypto-racist white elitist journalists in their white, middle class segregated cocoons being are in the area. And the possibilities their silent pervasive bigotry and ignorance of the law will permeate to others terrifies me even more. Just because newspapers can be purchased legally is no excuse to let unregulated, irresponsible journalist loose among us.
No one with common senses can claim that the First Amendment protects irresponsible crypto-racist white elitist journalists. No constitutional right, even the First Amendment, is without limits.
For those who’d like to respond to Ms. Bishop directly to let her know what you think, her published email address is
But don’t hold your breath waiting for a response.
Yeah a registry will be great criminals can look up a good target online case the house and rob them blind. HURRAY! Lets just register everything online so we can be mugged by people that know exactly what to smash n grab.
Amusing response about this article. Read to the end for a fun surprise.
Replace every reference of gun or firearm with vagina and shoot or shooting with use vagina or using vagina and hilarity ensues.
I don’t say this to denigrate women but to make a simple point. In the way she is talking about the only uses for guns is to kill and maim she is making an argument in the same way that you could argue sex is for procreation only. Other uses or benefits be damned! It was designed for that one thing by someone at one point so that’s forever what its for!
I doubt she’d like the argument flipped around on her to marginalize and control her so why do it to us? Nor do I believe she has the intellectual honesty to see the same flawed logic of in both…
I personally like the compare the right to having kids to the right to own a gun by flipping all of the anti gun arguments around into anti child arguments. The goal, again, is not to anger or denigrate but to show the same argument applied in a way to a right that is so fundamental and unquestionable to many people.
I just sent this to Tricia Bishop at The Baltimore Sun. If I get a response, I’ll let you know.
Dear Ms. Bishop:
I applaud your call to create a public registry of gun owners. Your insightful analysis shows that what ails America is best understood and presented through stereotypes and misinformed notions of the bugaboo issues that frighten uninformed Americans the most in our historically troubled times, namely guns and the people who own them.
The merits of your argument are self-evident, so I won’t waste keystrokes in repeating them. Instead, I suggest that we extend your courageous stand to the deeper ailment that afflicts Americans in these troubled times: the unfettered and unregulated dissemination of dangerous and radical ideas that might potentially lead someone to act in contravention of accepted social and normative behavior.
Ideas are more powerful than a bullet, so we must decide how we will allow ideas to spread. And how are ideas spread but through the unregulated morass of unenlightened and unregulated speech? The logical extension of your idea to protect us is that we must decide how we will peer review any speech in any forum that is wielded by the great unwashed mass that is known collectively as the American.
Extrapolating your supremely impeccable editorial judgment, we must create a public registry and government licensure of journalists, their editors, and their publishers. The Founding Fathers never foresaw the sort of advances we’ve had in publishing technology, nor did they foresee that publishing technology could become such a wild and unpredictable implement that can be used to spread dangerous ideologies. If my children visit someone else’s home—especially a journalist’s home—then I have the right to know what newspapers and books are on the bookshelves in that home.
Of course, some wild-eyed First Amendment fanatic will decry that licensure and public registry of so-called journalists will infringe on First Amendment guarantees of the natural right to freedom of expression and assembly. Pshaw! As you, our dear Baltimore Sun (B.S.) Editorial Board and others have shown, every natural right that is guaranteed in the Bill of Rights has arbitrary limits that only you, the educated, can delineate in the best way that you see fit. We cannot decide these things for ourselves. And after all, the First Amendment only applies to the technology that was available at the time it was written.
So, bravo to you, our fearless and courageous B.S. Editors, for shining the light for so many of us, the unenlightened masses of the ignorant who were unfortunate to be born in North America—a cultural backwater that has escaped tyranny for 500 years only by the grace of your wisdom. You have laid yet another, much needed brick in the foundation of the core belief that we must turn to Our Most Beneficent Government to decide who can be trusted to be a journalist, editor, and publisher and then license them to act as such.
Please help us, B.S. Editors. You’re our only hope.
Your most obedient Liberal Progressive Democrat,
