After refusing for months to say what he’ll do about a bill that would make New Jersey’s already strict gun control laws even tougher, Gov. Chris Christie will have to show his cards soon,” nj,com reports. “The politically charged legislation (A2006), which would reduce the permitted capacity of ammunition magazines from 15 to 10 rounds, passed the state Senate Monday by a vote of 22-17. Supporters and opponents of the bill said they believe the Assembly will vote a week from Thursday, finally sending it to Christie.” The article quotes bearingarms.com’s prediction that Christie’s presidential aspirations would disappear with the stroke of a pen, should the governor sign the bill into law. What do you reckon? Could we be heading for another “hold your nose and vote” presidential election?

    • How so? It’s not the gun owning minority in NJ who keep voting for gun-hating Democrats, it’s the rest of the population. The irony here is that the progressives constantly whine about protecting the rights of all sorts of minorities, except for one. I’ll give you 3 guesses. Oh, and to answer the question – yes, Christie will sign it. Only criminals need more than 10 rounds, right?

      • They brought it on themselves by continuing to live in hostile territory.
If you’re being persecuted, get out!

        • Will my fellow potg please stop with the ignorant “get out/you deserve it” comments? As far as I can tell NJ is still technically part of these United States and therefore still protected by the Bill of Rights, not to mention if the grabbers win in places like this they’re coming for free states/you next

        • I will leave sooner or later, but I still don’t see how NJ gun owners are to blame here. Loretta Weinberg, the primary sponsor of the bill, is from Teaneck. I’d be surprised if there is more than a baker’s dozen of gun owners in Teaneck. It’s probably similar for the rest of the co-sponsors. Leftist politicians with leftist constituents, who want to protect the rights they like and get rid of those they don’t. And where’s the NRA in all this?

        • They wont stop at the New England area man. Look at what they did to Colorado. A very extremely gun friendly state- and it now has an AWB. Once they’ve locked down an area, and consumed every natural resource they move on. They’re like locusts. North east is already pretty much locked down except for a couple of hold outs, once they finally get them, then they’ll start nibbling away at the South, here and there were they can, and start knocking em down in the Midwest. We have to take the fight to them, and beat them were it really hurts them, in places like NY, MA, NJ, and IL.

        • You’re being sarcastic, right?

I mean, you’re not actually blaming people who are being persecuted for… not leaving their homes/jobs/whatever?

Struggling not to run afoul of Godwin’s law here.

        • Yes, it is a hair worth splitting. I would rather live in a state with a 15 round limit that allows me to buy an AR-15/M-1A than a state that allows me to have a standard capacity magazine but prohibits me from buying something to use it in.

        • New Continental Army:

          You said:

“Look at what they did to Colorado. A very extremely gun friendly state- and it now has an AWB.”

Colorado DOES NOT HAVE an “Assault Weapons” Ban. It banned the transfer of magazines over fifteen rounds (previously owned are grandfathered). It banned any sale without a background check. Both new laws are hideous but are not an “Assault Weapons” ban.

      • You so sure that it’s not the gun owners who are voting for the Dem’s? You’d be surprised who gun owners vote for here in NJ, to 98% of NJ gun owners, the anything to do with the 2A is at the bottom of important issues to vote on.

        • That’s just because our state is screwed up in so many ways, that the 2A has a lot of competition for people’s attention (but surprisingly not the attention of politicians).

    • Google is a powerful tool. Show me where the number of gun owners in NJ outnumber the rest of the brainwashed electorate? The whole point of the Drake case that SCOTUS will not take is that the restrictions on who can have a gun is such it is a de facto gun ban. There could possibly be more gun owners if they were not banned.

The statement you made is as bad and ill informed as some made by Piers Morgan.

      • Indeed. I’m not from NJ, but pulling up stakes and moving is not so easy when you have a home, a good job, a wife and kids, friends, relatives and so on. As for this bill, it’s even worse than the CT 10+ round magazine ban, as there is no provision whatsoever for people to legally keep their mags. Basically, everyone will be forced to turn in, destroy or sell out of state, and then buy new 10 round mags, which are not common and pricey for some handguns (if you can actually find an OEM Browning High Power 10 rounder it will run you around $50). Compliance will be low, just like CT & NY. If Christie signs this, he may well not have a future in national Republican politics.

  1. The chances of him not signing are about the same as the chances of him passing on another trip to the buffet.

  2. Is Christie seriously the best the Republicans can do? Honestly? Is the talent pool completely drained? There has got to be someone else.

    • There are many good republicans. But the establishment media likes to shove establishment candidates down our throats (see McCain, Romney, Giuliani, Gingrich, etc).

      • And replace welfare with corporate welfare, and socialism with fascism.

Perry and West are both statists. They have the same fundamental philosophical flaw as Obama, Clinton, Feinstein, Bloomberg, Louis XIV, etc. They believe the state has the moral right to control people. That rights are something that the state grants to the people and that they exist purely at the whim of the ruling elite.

    • The more I think about it, the more I’m convinced the primary purpose of this legislation is to take Christie out of the running for the nomination.

Face it; sign it or veto it, he’s screwed either way.

    • Here’s a fun demographic fact. Why should we think that the average citizens from all parts of America who showed up to defend the Bundy ranch will vote for a guy like Chris Christy? The only way his chances as a presidential candidate make any sense is in the imaginations of the DC beltway bandit political consults who think they can peer across the Potomac river and see the future. Beyond that boundary, Christy ain’t gonna fly regardless of what he does on the magazine bill. Either way he’s screwed.

  3. If the man hopes to even have a chance of winning the Republican primary in 2016 he won’t sign it. If he signs it, take it as a signal he has no “serious” intention of ever being President.

    • You need to add “as a Republican” to the end of that, in order to be correct.

  4. @ anon

Used to think the same way, but they really didn’t. They’re just unfortunate to have been caught behind enemy lines. I’m sure many would leave, if it were that simple.

  5. Gov. Tollbooth probably will not sign A2006. There’s no upside for him if he signs it, and plenty of downside.

And the only way he gets the Republican presidential nod is if every other Republican candidate dies immediately.

    • There’s no upside, that’s true. And that’s why he’ll sign. The government might have good intentions, but it always ends up doing the wrong thing to “solve” the problem. So I think he’ll sign and call it a compromise.

    • I agree with everything Ralph said. Christie has consistently proven two things while in office:

      1. He will always act in his own self interest, even to the detriment of his party.
      2. Christie believes he can be the next POTUS, even in the midst of scandal.

If you take 1 and 2 together there’s no way he signs.

  6. Christie had no chance before Newtown and has no chance after Newtown. He has always been all hype based on his willingness to take on the Teachers Unions. Well, Richard M. Daley gave backhanded support to Scott Walker when he was doing in the Wisconsin Unions. People like him and Hillary Clinton are always deemed the front runner until serious opposition enters the race and then they fade away.

Will he sign the bill, I am betting not and it has nothing to do with whether he is running for President. He is toast at the national level anyway.

  7. Lol Cristie, I could never vote for Governer Lap-Band. number one he is a Lib, number two I don’t want to hear a Jersey jerk off accent at the SOTU. number three, whats the difference between him and Hitlery?

    • Hitlery is slightly, and I mean slightly, thinner. Christie is better looking. And probably lies less often. I mean seriously, what are the odds of him lying more than Hitlery? We know it is possible, just look at the white house, but not probable.

  8. It being New Jersey, and his presidential aspirations already in the trash, there is reason he will NOT sign. it is not like Jersey will be the only state to have a ten round mag limit–California and Massachusetts lead the way, and New York has joined in, so there are lots of replacement mags on the market. And who really “Needs” more than ten rounds anyway? If you do, you can always reload, right? I think he has signed and the ink is dry, we are just waiting for the announcement…

    • You know, I think it says a lot about Christy that nobody commenting here has said anything about him having actual convictions about the issue of magazine limits. Christy is a political opportunist whose convictions, if he has any, are always subordinate to his political aspirations. The only “conviction” I can tell he has is that he’s a statist and, like other members of the political class, sees ever larger government as a means to acquire power. Issues like magazine size, gun control, or individual freedom are just means to an end.

  9. “Could we be heading for another “hold your nose and vote” presidential election? ”
Nope, not again! If Repubs can’t select a real conservative, instead of the past fake conservatives.
Even Hillary will have to play nice with gun owners IF she wants to get re-elected, and Bill definately wants
to be a second term as 2nd in command.

    • Bill would be First Man, and first in command. Hillary would be a figurehead.

      • When Clinton was president, everyone said Hillary was the one pulling the strings and Bill was just the show pony… So, which is it?

        • They’re clearly the same person

when was the last time you ever saw them in public together? Huh? HUH? That’s what I thought.

      • You must not be old enough to remember when Hillary was President the first time….

        Tom

  10. I’m sure he’s wishing the bill doesn’t get to his desk until AFTER the mid-term elections in order to assess what affect it will have for the anti-2A legislature. I have no doubt he would sign/not-sign depending on which way gets him the most votes.

  11. Answering your final question, they are ALL hold your nose elections. Anybody who runs for President is automatically too stupid for the job. Merely throwing the hat in the ring precludes intelligent thought on the part of the participant.

  12. It’s gonna be Jeb “Illegal Lovin'” Bush & Chris “Nobody told me there was a bridge” Christie vs Hillary “The Butcher of Benghazi” Clinton & Michelle “We need to cut veteran’s benefits for vital Bahama vacations” Obama.
Doesn’t matter, we lose. Even if every single voting American wrote in Cruz/Paul or whatnot, the race belongs to he who controls the machines.

    • Wrong. Scott Walker for the win but in I am sure you will discover some point of disagreement with your agenda and you will declare him a RINO.

    • Hillary “The Butcher of Benghazi” Clinton & Michelle “We need to cut veteran’s benefits for vital Bahama vacations” Obama.

Would have loved to be a mouse in the corner when that pecking-order discussion was held.

  13. I am surprised the vote wasn’t more skewed than 22-17. Are there no RINO’s in the NJ Senate?

  14. What bothers me most is that there appears to be few if any good Presidential candidates from any party … from a nation of 310 million people. What does that say about the current state of affairs?

I guess the fundamental problem is that the nature of politics attracts the sort of people for whom we do not want to vote. It is kind of a catch 22 I suppose.

Maybe we need a Constitutional amendment that imposes term limits on every position — even bureaucrats. And that same amendment would prevent people from bouncing around and making a career in politics. Serve as Secretary of State of the U.S. for eight years? Great. No more government jobs for you.

    • The pool is far smaller than ~310 million people: It only consists of people who currently hold state-level political positions and above, as well as Fortune-500 board members/chief executives.

Nobody outside of that “pool” will get within a million miles of even being considered for a major party candidate position.

Being top military brass is no longer even a legit starting point – the two parties are still too afraid to elect a “war monger,” i.e. anyone who served within the past 20 years.

You gotta be in the club to play in the sandbox.

  15. No holding of the nose here. R’s have to earn it, and they haven’t reciently.

  16. I don’t like Christie anyway, but if he signs this, yes, *poof* goes his chances of being nominated.

  17. I don’t think he’ll sign it but it’s just delaying the inevitable. The Dem that gets elected when he leaves will sign it. Hell, maybe the 5 round bill will get traction. We NJ gun owners are screwed!

  18. If he signs, he’ll never get the nomination. Primaries are heavily influenced by the base, which will not appreciate this bill. The primary schedule is front loaded with more conservative states. He’d flame out long before states like NY or CA could get to vote for him. Thus cycle is wide open on the GOP side, which means there will be real races amonv real contenders, not vanity candidacies and one predestined nominee. He can’t win in that environment where real conservatives can exploit that primary system.

If by some fluke he managed to get the nomination, conservatives would stay home on election day and he’d lose like McCain and Romney did for lack of conservative support. His best bet is to water it down somehow and make a deal for something else. He needs to appease the liberals and not put off the conservatives, which is virtually impossible for a statesman ten times as talented as Christie. So Christie has no shot of pulling it off.

    • Let’s see, the article says he vetoed a ban on the Barret .50, a gun that has been used once to commit a crime (by a police officer if I recall), and a bill requiring a special ID to buy a gun (not because it was a bad thing but because the technology to implement the bill does not exist), which is all well and good, except for the TEN bills containing other restrictions that he DID sign. This man is no friend to the 2A.

      • Given the mindset and the politics in NJ, his vetoing any gun bill deserves credit.

One has (an imperfect) parallel with Gov. Jerry Brown of CA. Gov. Brown has vetoed some pretty damaging bills, but he’s also signed some pretty annoying ones. Is he a friend or a foe of the 2nd Amendment?

  19. If he can take time out from selfies with Obama, Christie will flip a coin, heads the Second Amendment trumphs, tails the fear mongers win.

  20. “Miller said he hopes Christie will put the voters of his own state — where polls have shown support for stricter gun control measures — ahead of those presidential primary states.”

I hope he signs it too, so the rest of the country can see him for what he really is: a “progressive” pretending to be a Republican. Remember his wonderful made-for-TV appearance with Obama just before the 2012 election, dancing on the beach?

Unfortunately, as a typical New Jersey politician, he will probably cut a deal with the Dems – he will veto the bill to show he is “pro-2nd amendment” and then quietly use his political spoils system to buy enough NJ GOP votes to override his veto.

    • I hope that anyone who is paying any attention already knows what this tubby POS stands for and I hope that translates into his having no shot running as GOP for POTUS but I’m not so sure anymore. This country is amazingly short on memory.

  21. • “I’m so grateful to the State Senators we spoke and met with in New Jersey for passing A2006 and A2777, two commonsense bills that will make our communities safer from gun violence. The legislators we spoke with were respectful, listened carefully, and understood that we are a stronger nation when we protect the lives of our children. We look forward to working with the State House for final passage of these bills and to working with Governor Christie to sign them.”
    — Mark Barden, Advocacy Director for Sandy Hook Promise

Isn’t nice that once side gets personal audience to discuss the matter and they will get personal audience with the Governor but the other side never gets any say. I guess that is what many progressives mean when they say everyone is equal

  22. Please quit ragging on New Jersey gun owners. It sounds a lot like the crap I heard about Illinois for years. Move to Indiana or Wisconsin. If things can get better in a s##t hole like Illinois they can get better in NJ, NY or MD. I am no fan of Christie and believe he has no chance. I really like Huckabee but he suffers from not being pretty enough.
Compared to Christie Huckabee’s a Greek god. What a shallow s##t country.

  23. Personally, I kind of hope he does sign it, for selfish reasons. Sooner or later one of these Magazine capacity limits will be shown to be unworkable & unconstitutional – and then they will start falling like the house of cards they are. Just as “Shall-Issue” is.

    • There are already 6 states that have them. Adding more will just make it seem like established law. The fewer, the more it seems like an overreach.

      • 6 vs 7? Still a pretty clear minority.

One thing about the new Jersey law as I understand it, that may wake up a few Fudds is it even applies to .22lr with fixed magazines.

If that’s not arbitrary and capricious what is?

The more they tighten down – the more likely they’ll over extend and get everything thrown out.

  24. Here is my take. If Governor Christie vetoes the bill, he is planning to run for President. If he signs it, he is not planning to run for President.

  25. I think he’ll probably sign it, figuring he’s got a better chance remaining in power in NJ by doing so and playing as the ‘reasonable’ republican than winning the primary and election after all the dumb stuff that he’s done or supervised.

  26. I have serious doubts that he will sign it. Last year, he vetoed a couple of their stupid bills and pointedly said they were solutions to problems that didn’t exist. The GOP appears to have been unanimous in voting no on these bills. I hope he continues the party line and vetoes this atrocity. If he doesn’t, it will create close to one million new felons for the state to deal with because most of us will follow Anthony Calandro’s statement from the hearings, “I will not comply”.

  27. I’m hoping he vetos it, like he did with their idiotic attempted ban of .50 cal rifles. However, I’m also realistic in that when his term is up, and a Dem gets elected to the Governorship, the mag reduction ban won’t be to 10 rounds, it’ll be to 7, or 5, and the sh*t eating liberals in this state will sail it through.

    • I’m afraid you’re probably right. The Sheeple will continue to vote for Dems and this nonsense will continue. That’s why we all have to embrace “I will not comply”. there aren’t enough cops in the state to go around and confiscate all the mags that hold more than 10 rounds.

      • Oh, trust me, all my mags will stay as they are – if the Libtards want all mags in the state to be 10 rounders, then I think the sponsors of this bill need to pony up. They should buy me (9) 10 round mags, to replace the (6) 15 round mags for my Walther PPQm2 out of their own pockets. We’ll see how fast they go to grab when they have to foot the bill. I’ll use those mags at the range

Also, I will promptly drive 20 minutes west into PA, and repurchase 15 round mags, which will be loaded up in my guns for home defense, or used if I ever decide to shoot IDPA or something else (which of course would be an out of state competition, lol)

  28. Miss Chrissy should sign the gun-grabbing bill then run against Hillery for the hate civil rights oarty nod (Dims Party).

  29. As it is now he will not get my vote because of the previous gun control legislation he has signed into law . Already showed what side he is on , I consider him a RINO , no pun intended , just like some of the others in office . Be prepared and ready . Keep your powder dry .

  30. Oh and another that is looking at running will not get my vote Peter King of NY , he is a RINO also , he reeks of left leaning politics . Be prepared and ready . Keep your powder dry . As for a presidential candidate I would like to see Governor Nikki Haley run for President . Be prepared and ready . Keep your powder dry .

  31. He’ll sign. If he doesn’t run it doesn’t matter, if he does it will appeal to the blue state voters on the left and right coasts and Chicago. Doesn’t mean he’d get GOP nom…but who knows who will crash and burn before then.

  32. Christie, aside from being the darling of the lefty media, probably doesn’t have the oomph to win large red states in the presence of *ahem* better candidates.

  33. If the NJ gov gets the Republican nomination, I for one, will probably drop a brick on the accelerator pedal – and vote Democrap. At least they honestly admit what they are.

Be assured RINOs, I won’t just stay home on voting day.

  34. He will sign it, only in NJ would he even be considered a Republican (or one of the other just to the left of Marx states, like Illinois).

  35. “Could we be heading for another “hold your nose and vote” presidential election?”

    You mean there’s another kind?

    Yeah, I remember now… 1960.

    • And that’s exactly the attitude that gave us the current regime. Remember, if you vote for “the lesser of two evils,” you’re still voting for evil.

At this point any third party would be better!

  36. The decision on who is president will not hinge on this vote but will contribute. There is no way come hell or high water or even a cold wind from the North that I would vote for Christie!!!
