I will leave sooner or later, but I still don’t see how NJ gun owners are to blame here. Loretta Weinberg, the primary sponsor of the bill, is from Teaneck. I’d be surprised if there is more than a baker’s dozen of gun owners in Teaneck. It’s probably similar for the rest of the co-sponsors. Leftist politicians with leftist constituents, who want to protect the rights they like and get rid of those they don’t. And where’s the NRA in all this?
They wont stop at the New England area man. Look at what they did to Colorado. A very extremely gun friendly state- and it now has an AWB. Once they’ve locked down an area, and consumed every natural resource they move on. They’re like locusts. North east is already pretty much locked down except for a couple of hold outs, once they finally get them, then they’ll start nibbling away at the South, here and there were they can, and start knocking em down in the Midwest. We have to take the fight to them, and beat them were it really hurts them, in places like NY, MA, NJ, and IL.

Colorado DOES NOT HAVE an “Assault Weapons” Ban. It banned the transfer of magazines over fifteen rounds (previously owned are grandfathered). It banned any sale without a background check. Both new laws are hideous but are not an “Assault Weapons” ban.

Indeed. I’m not from NJ, but pulling up stakes and moving is not so easy when you have a home, a good job, a wife and kids, friends, relatives and so on. As for this bill, it’s even worse than the CT 10+ round magazine ban, as there is no provision whatsoever for people to legally keep their mags. Basically, everyone will be forced to turn in, destroy or sell out of state, and then buy new 10 round mags, which are not common and pricey for some handguns (if you can actually find an OEM Browning High Power 10 rounder it will run you around $50). Compliance will be low, just like CT & NY. If Christie signs this, he may well not have a future in national Republican politics.

Perry and West are both statists. They have the same fundamental philosophical flaw as Obama, Clinton, Feinstein, Bloomberg, Louis XIV, etc. They believe the state has the moral right to control people. That rights are something that the state grants to the people and that they exist purely at the whim of the ruling elite.
The more I think about it, the more I’m convinced the primary purpose of this legislation is to take Christie out of the running for the nomination.

1. He will always act in his own self interest, even to the detriment of his party.
2. Christie believes he can be the next POTUS, even in the midst of scandal.

You know, I think it says a lot about Christy that nobody commenting here has said anything about him having actual convictions about the issue of magazine limits. Christy is a political opportunist whose convictions, if he has any, are always subordinate to his political aspirations. The only “conviction” I can tell he has is that he’s a statist and, like other members of the political class, sees ever larger government as a means to acquire power. Issues like magazine size, gun control, or individual freedom are just means to an end.

What bothers me most is that there appears to be few if any good Presidential candidates from any party … from a nation of 310 million people. What does that say about the current state of affairs?
I guess the fundamental problem is that the nature of politics attracts the sort of people for whom we do not want to vote. It is kind of a catch 22 I suppose.
Maybe we need a Constitutional amendment that imposes term limits on every position — even bureaucrats. And that same amendment would prevent people from bouncing around and making a career in politics. Serve as Secretary of State of the U.S. for eight years? Great. No more government jobs for you.
The pool is far smaller than ~310 million people: It only consists of people who currently hold state-level political positions and above, as well as Fortune-500 board members/chief executives.
Nobody outside of that “pool” will get within a million miles of even being considered for a major party candidate position.
Being top military brass is no longer even a legit starting point – the two parties are still too afraid to elect a “war monger,” i.e. anyone who served within the past 20 years.

If he signs, he’ll never get the nomination. Primaries are heavily influenced by the base, which will not appreciate this bill. The primary schedule is front loaded with more conservative states. He’d flame out long before states like NY or CA could get to vote for him. Thus cycle is wide open on the GOP side, which means there will be real races amonv real contenders, not vanity candidacies and one predestined nominee. He can’t win in that environment where real conservatives can exploit that primary system.
If by some fluke he managed to get the nomination, conservatives would stay home on election day and he’d lose like McCain and Romney did for lack of conservative support. His best bet is to water it down somehow and make a deal for something else. He needs to appease the liberals and not put off the conservatives, which is virtually impossible for a statesman ten times as talented as Christie. So Christie has no shot of pulling it off.

Let’s see, the article says he vetoed a ban on the Barret .50, a gun that has been used once to commit a crime (by a police officer if I recall), and a bill requiring a special ID to buy a gun (not because it was a bad thing but because the technology to implement the bill does not exist), which is all well and good, except for the TEN bills containing other restrictions that he DID sign. This man is no friend to the 2A.
Given the mindset and the politics in NJ, his vetoing any gun bill deserves credit.

Personally, I kind of hope he does sign it, for selfish reasons. Sooner or later one of these Magazine capacity limits will be shown to be unworkable & unconstitutional – and then they will start falling like the house of cards they are. Just as “Shall-Issue” is.
There are already 6 states that have them. Adding more will just make it seem like established law. The fewer, the more it seems like an overreach.

Here is my take. If Governor Christie vetoes the bill, he is planning to run for President. If he signs it, he is not planning to run for President.
I think he’ll probably sign it, figuring he’s got a better chance remaining in power in NJ by doing so and playing as the ‘reasonable’ republican than winning the primary and election after all the dumb stuff that he’s done or supervised.

I have serious doubts that he will sign it. Last year, he vetoed a couple of their stupid bills and pointedly said they were solutions to problems that didn’t exist. The GOP appears to have been unanimous in voting no on these bills. I hope he continues the party line and vetoes this atrocity. If he doesn’t, it will create close to one million new felons for the state to deal with because most of us will follow Anthony Calandro’s statement from the hearings, “I will not comply”.
