I love my senator. After President Obama announced plans to arm Syrian rebels with fully automatic machine guns, Ted Cruz tweeted “Anyone know if President Obama intends to perform background checks on the Syrian rebels before providing them weapons?” And it took off like a gunshot. There are already a couple petitions asking that President Obama have the Syrian rebels pass the same background checks that U.S. citizens currently have to pass to purchase a firearm, including the 6+ month wait for NFA tax stamps. Oh, and that whole post-1986 machine gun ban too. Here’s hoping that the petition gets enough signatures that he actually has to give an answer to these.

Born in Canada, may be a problem. May be a supreme court case. His mother is a U.S. citizen so technically he was naturally born here.
The canada issue has been addressed. A legal non-issue, but they’d run attack ads about it.
If he was registered as a “US citizen born abroad” certificate from the State Department, then he is a natural born US citizen. Of course, he is also a natural born Canaidan too, since they have birth right citizenship. Military kids that were born overseas fall in this catagory, like John McCain and my niece. The Constitution doesn’t say you have to be born here, just a naturally born US citizen. The issue came up with Mitt’s dad, who was born in Mexico, when he ran for the GOP nomination in 1968.
If you apply the current eligability status for his part, why the heck not.

Cruz looks to be the real deal. As Rand Paul and Marco Rubio have run off at the mouth with idiocy. Have to wait a few months to see how he holds up. A very bright well spoken Constitutionalist.
Likely darkhorse Presidential nominee in 16. As Iowa activist I’ll forecast he will do very well in Iowa caucus/straw poll but the RINO establishment will be out to cut his throat at everyturn. RINOs be as big a problem as the dems. May well shake out as a RINO vs Radical Republican (bing it) primary contest..

If our current American regime ran Syria, they would ruthlessly extinguish all dissent.
You mean like with surveillance of phone records and drone strikes and cracking a reporter’s computer? Our government would never do stuff like that.
They didn’t see a problem arming mexican gangs, these guys are far enough away that the guns probably won’t end up in Texas.
It will get enough signatures, no doubt. The response will be from some aid, to the effect of…
… to conclude, machine guns are weapons of war and this is a war. Additionaly these are not US citizens blah, blah, blah.
Hopefully there is a cool down period as well. Can’t have rebels flying off the handle at the regime.

I have one bone to pick with Cruz: he voted in favor of the “Monsanto Protection Act” (whatever it was actually called). Something silly like “states’ rights”, as if states’ rights had ANYTHING to do with it! BAH!!!

Can Illinois trade Durbin for Cruz? I know it sounds like a bad trade for Texas, but just think of all the fun that you can have with tar and feathers.
Why bother with background checks for the Syrians? Background checks were done for all the Fast & Furious guns and we see where those guns ended up :-).
Oh the NFA thing makes me wonder if the Syrians will setup an FFL like the Mexicans did, and if that will be the largest source of leaked guns, like the Mexican FFL is.

A natural born citizen according to the Supreme Court is on born of parents that are both US citizens. That as pposed to one born of just one US citizen parent. It stops the splitting of an individual that favors two different countries.
Petition signed. The only American guns going into Syria should be firmly in the grasp of American Soldiers or Marines. These revolutionaries have no particular love for us; they are likely to give our ammo back at 2400 fps when we do have to intervene.

Could this petition backfire on us? Will the White House turn around and point to this that Americans favor Gun Control so strongly they want to impose it on Syrian Rebels as well? Maybe we shouldn’t be so hasty with this one……

WE the AMERICAN people must pay x amount & go through x amount of hoops to get any type of firearm in this country but our “president of the united states” hands them out like candy to fighting rebels in other countries. where does that make sense to any one ? so if i don’t live in America assault rifle good ? but if i live in America assualt rifle bad ? did i wake up in bizzaro world ? or just the current American nightmare ?
