Wilson Combat Ranger AR Rifle 243

I own an FN SCAR-16. I love it — if for no other reason that shooting it is a better muscle builder than all the arm machines at Gold’s Gym combined. Don’t get me wrong: all that weight tames the fearsome recoil of the .223 cartridge. See what I did there? See what Wilson Combat did with their new lightweight billet receiver and match grade tapered barrel below. It’s amazing how much “less is more” costs. But quality doesn’t come cheap  . . .

Press release – -(Ammoland.com)- The Ranger series of rifles by Wilson Combat combines our exclusive lightweight billet receiver set and our Ranger profile match-grade, heavily tapered barrel to create a fast-handling precision AR carbine that is an ideal tactical, defense or hunting gun where light weight is a prerequisite.

Our Ranger profile barrel is the lightest profile AR barrel that still retains match-grade accuracy as the rifle heats up from rapid-fire shooting.

Like all Wilson Combat custom rifles, the Ranger is equipped with our strong and light M-LOK capable rail and our time-tested Tactical Trigger Unit.

A Wilson-SLR click adjustable gas block allows you to easily fine tune your Ranger to the pressure of your specific ammunition used. When you need a handy yet accurate premium tactical rifle the Ranger will lead the way.

  1. Uh, yeah. I love my SCAR 16 too. I have no need or desire for Wilson’s new affectation… especially at that price.

      • A traditional bolt action rifle with a 20 or 22″ barrel for example. Yes, there are ballistic charts available online but this is the internet and it’s now easier to throw a comment out there than do any research!!

        • With a .308Win, we see anywhere from 20 to 25fps loss in velocity per inch, from 26 down to about 13 inches. The most common weights are closer to the 25fps mark.
The same 150gr round moving out of a 20″ barrel at 2800fps (near a max load) out of a 14″ barrel is now moving 2600fps.
In energy terms, that is a loss of 225ftlbs at 300 yards, 189fttlbs at 500 yards, 69ftlbs at 800 yards and 33ftlbs at 1,000 yards.
It will also go subsonic about 80 yards sooner, yielding a less predictable flight.
Most importantly, the slower round, due to the short barrel, represents significant additional wind drift. The 14″ barrel will experience a full 12″ more windage at 1,000 yards with a 10mph full value wind over the 20″ barrel.

        • Brian Litz’s Point Mass Ballistics Solver program is outstanding. I highly recommend it. I have dozens of my own guns and 100s of my own loads plugged into it, and the data it spits out is always dead on.

    • Wilson has offered that caliber in their AR10 platform for years. It’s one of Bill’s favorites. It’s not going to disappear from the line up anytime soon.

      • I think it’s a great round, just wish other manufacturers of less expensive guns would follow suit.

  2. What are these “arm machines” that Robert mentioned? I thought barbells, bars for chinups + pullups, and the floor for pushups were all the “arm machines” needed.

  3. I’ve never liked the ar platform. But in .243 it has some promise.

3000 grand +. They must be banking on another panic buy after the Florida shooting.

    • I like the idea of an AR in .243. Maybe S&W can make an M&P Sport in .243 for those of use that like sub $1000 guns. 😀 Wishful thinking

      • +1 !!!!!!!

Note: they would have to offer it with a 20-inch barrel to get my cash. No 16-inch barrels in the calibers that actually have some serious oomph to them.

        • The AR platform that I have most of my experience with had a 20 inch barrel and a F/A giggle switch. That was over 4 decades ago.

With a 20 inch barrel in .243 I would be seriously curious.

  4. If they would shorten the 7.62x 51 down to 39mm they might invent a cartridge that would work good in a short barrel . The .243 is my favorite cartridge, run its velocity around 2600 fps and it ain’t so great. They’ve chopped the barrel of the m16 so much you might as well have a 22 Magnum. .
