Remember that late 70’s bumper sticker “Question Authority”? Although TTAG’s internal mission statement is “Speed, Surprise and Violence of Action” all of our contributors are encouraged to approach any gun-related story with a grain of salt the size of the Darwin, Minnesota twine ball. When it comes to negligent firearm discharges involving cops, school officials, politicians or anyone else in a position of authority, we reserve the right to call bullshit. As I’m doing here. “Aurora police are investigating an accidental shooting that happened in the parking lot of Rangeview High School and left one student injured Monday,” thedenverchannel.com reports. “About an hour after school let out for the day, the student was getting a ride home from a school employee who also works a second job as an armed security officer . . .
The employee was trying to put his gun into the glove box of the car when the weapon fired, hitting the student in the leg.
The man drove the student to a nearby hospital, arriving around 4:30 p.m., police said. The student was rushed into surgery with what police described as a “significant injury” to his leg.
The student is expected to survive.
Police said the driver works at the school but is not a teacher, and he and the student know each other, police said. It is unclear if any charges will be filed against the employee.
Sure, nothing wrong with that story. Simple case of a weapon firing all on its own during an attempt to safely stow it. No showing off. No threats. No inappropriate behavior on anyone’s part—save the gun itself and the journalist who somehow forgot to note the name of the part-time armed security officer.
I suddenly understand another aspect of this cultural difference. It’s like Lt. Col. Dave Cooper suggests: it’s all about training.
If you have a means of terrible violence around you every day and choose not to use it (unless necessary), you learn respect and restraint, discipline and good judgement.
If you instead deny and villainize that means of terrible violence, and one day when you’re unhinged you get access to it, you aren’t conditioned to or practiced at exercising restraint or discipline or good judgement regarding its use, whether through conscious or unconscious choice. You are only practiced at denying yourself access and reviling it as other, and now the very thing you deny and revile is right in front of you, ready to be taken and incorporated.
Ergo, hoplophobes who (rightly) fear what they would do because they have no practice at not doing.
The thing that pisses me off the most is that these kinds of incidents will be used to argue that “We The people” shouldn’t be allowed to keep and bare. No one will care to talk about proper training and personal responsibility. It’s a negligent discharge, plain and simple and whoever was keeping said firearm should be punished, not the rest of us.
Guns are not cool? The hell they aren’t. Guns are so cool there’s hardly anything cooler.
Imagine there were no guns. (Bear with me.) They had never been invented. Then, somebody like Steve Jobs or Dean Kaman comes along and invents a device you can hold in you hand. You drop these little cartridges in it, pull a lever and a tiny explosion occurs inside it. It propels a cylinder of metal faster than the speed of sound to something hundreds of yard away and punches a hole in it. Everybody would want one. Everybody would say “OH MAN, that is so fuckin’ cool I gotta get me on o’ those!!” You think iPhone rollouts are popular? When these things go on sale, they’ll be lined up around the block three times.
Guns are cool. Guns are fun. Everybody wants one.
This liberal douche thinks that all men are as mentally unstable as he is. He talks of rage and suicide as though they were common and unavoidable. He is not worth reading.
Death is a part of life, children must learn to accept death and be respectful of life and our natural resources.
Are you going to tell your children to buckle up because they are likely to get into a near-fatal car accident that day? Suicide is not a random side-effect of gun ownership.
Are you an good example for your children? Chances are if you regularly carry you are less prone to violence and “random rage”.
When you take responsibility for your life and the lives or your family and deny dependence on state and federal services what does that say to your children?
When you choose to educate your children and instill the right morals instead of harshly restricting their every move and thought you set them free and help create self-sufficient and responsible adults.
The jist of this is typical liberal parenting, a clear allegory of gun-control, and shows the gun-control thought-pattern. We are all the “children” in this situation, they prefer to legislate and control our every move over instilling a moral and educated society. Their delusions make them think controlling us is the answer while ignoring the actual issues.
Another pencil-necked panty sniffer has been heard from. Geez, where do they find these imitation men?
mmmmmmmmm tasty stuff
Gopher snakes are about like bull snakes not venomous but has the bad attitude
but hey 4 to 5 does make a good meal
I wonder if the same people complaining make sure they safely move all spiders, roaches, ants, rats, moles, mosquitoes, flies, etc from their property and make sure not to kill any of them.
the anti’s are pulling out whats left of there hair….priceless….that horse is so far out of the barn the barn can’t be seen anymore
I’m well aware of the ecological benefits of snakes and appreciate their role, but if one finds its way onto my back porch I’m gonna send the little critter back to it’s Creator. I won’t feel happy about it, but I’ll take care of business.
This guy really did nothing abnormal or uncalled for. I don’t understand the outrage.
San Fran, pretty sure animals have more righs than people.
I am suprised hes not in jail. As a rule i try not to kill predators because they keep the rodents at bay. Often, however, the females in the house demand i kill suspected threats so that they do not return. A 4.5 foot snake seems like a threat to small pets, so sorry but Mr Snake would probably have to meet Mrs. Crossman.
I am a 1911 fan , so I carried a para-ordinance P-12 for years , when I wanted a new one , they were no longer available , so I purchased a Springfield XDM compact , it has the high capacity I liked in my P-12 but does not bear the resemblance to the 1911 I loved . However , It does have both a loaded chamber indicator AND a cocked indicator , very light because it is ” plastic ” like the Glock , but I never liked the feel of the Glock , maybe because I have small hands . My point is , I bought this almost on a whim but have come to to like it better than any auto handgun I have ever owned and will never willingly part with it . GREAT job Springfield , now just get all your production OUT of the anti-gun New England and New York area and you will be THE top firearms company in my book .
As the details reluctantly are pried loose from our Government, I will state it again: I would have rather dealt myself with younger bomber boy hiding in a boat in my backyard than hundreds of kitted-up and adrenalined-up LEO’s swarming my neighborhood. I really doubt that any forthcoming details will change my mind.
And another favorite:
“The chaos in Watertown that led to the friendly fire shooting of Donohue can be compared to a war zone, DeCarlo explained.
“Things (that) occur in the very dynamic moments of a situation like this … are not necessarily — no matter how hard police work — what they are trained to do,” said the former police chief, noting that none of his remarks are intended as criticism of police.”
Okay, so maybe when this sort of extremely rare situation manifests, perhaps we should call in folks who are trained for this sort of thing rather than asking guys who spend a majority of their time working traffic details and writing speeding tickets to do it.
300 rounds? That is 10 “illegal for the serfs” 30 round magazines dumped at two targets with few hits. With all of those rounds, it still took an SUV driven by “Gilligan” to forever immortalize “Speedbump”.
Cherry picked “study” in it’s worst form. The author did not look for any data that would challenge his hypothesis, such as the elevated suicide rates in countries where guns are almost completely unavailable. Why do we tolerate pseudo-science especially when it masquerades as virtue?
Cock, load, close, take aim-off safe, squeeze…pfffttt! Bye bye, Snakealoo!
SO JUDAS, YOU UPHOLD THE LAW NO MATTER HOW YOU INTERPRET IT? SO IF A LIBERAL DEMOCRATIC JUDGE STEPS ALL OVER OUR CONSTITUTION AND PASSES A LAW, YOU UPHOLD IT. I GUESS YOUR LAST NAME TELLS IT ALL. TYPICAL COP.
I run a fabrication company that specializes in ornamental metals…. When I get these blatantly misguided calls, some even outright lies, I try to sell them my product. I figure it’s only fair to try to sell them what I fabricate because they’re doing the same. They fabricate falsehoods and lies, I fabricate a beautiful product…. let’s see who wins…lol. To say that it pisses them off is an understatement.
Gun grabbers vote on any of a dozen different issues, because they are, for the most part, doctrinaire lefties, who buy into the whole “progressive” agenda.
Gun owners vote on gun rights. They will cross over party and ideological lines in order to vote for the pro-gun candidate and against the anti-gun candidate, when given a choice.
So, being a gun grabber can only lose you votes. You will get all of your fellow travellers, anyway, whether you support gun rights or not. But supporting gun rights is good for a good 10% in any election, much of it at the cost of your opponent, if he happens to be anti-gun.
DRZM has explained the symptoms but ignores the disease. The social conditions that manufacture the Akein Scotts of the world are generated by what Walter Russell Meade calls the “blue social model.” This model of society is run by a kleptocracy that services a dependent populatiion, all fed by tax dollars from ever shrinking productive class. The blue social model’s ultimate destination is Detroit.
The primary factors that cause violent crime to be concentrated in one relative small demographic group are the percentage of children born out of wedlock, the percentage of the population on welfare and the length of time the blue social model has been implemented in a jurisdiction.
If you want to reduce crime and violence in this country ban Democrats not guns.
Holy smokes Ralph. I need to make sure to NOT be eating or drinking when I read your posts. The stuff ends up on my keyboard and screen.
I will buy you a drink should we ever meet.
Untill we do this this & this the crime will keep happening, or CC holders can put a real hitch in akein’s/gangbangers get along. I’m going with option number 2, Randy
OK – am I the only one that thinks that the recoil spring looks more like a solid piece of plastic rod?
Leave the “I gotta solid rod right here for you, baby” comments out of this.
Notice that she never racks the slide (ok, ok, leave the “rack” comments out too) and lets it slam forward. She rides it forward (again, leave it alone). And at the end, too, after re-assembly – no evidence that there is an actual recoil spring there. Is she not physically strong enough to work the action of a Glock?
