For millions of American school kids, b-b-b-b-bird bird bird, bird is the word. The NRA’s Eddie Eagle program continues to spread the message of honest-to-God gun safety, saving God knows how many lives in the process. EE’s latest . . .

an all-ages book so that 5th graders and up aren’t embarrassed in a “oooh, that’s for baaaabies” kinda way. Ms. Lowden tells TTAG that Eddie takes flight in some twenty-six thousand schools across the country. Even New Jersey! Yes, but . . .

According to infoplease.com, there were 98,817 public schools operating in the 2009 – 2010 school year. So Eddie isn’t in over 72k schools. Put another way, the NRA’s safety program only reaches 26 percent of school kids, leaving 74 percent without Eddie’s gun safety training.

Gun control kills. And that’s all I’ve got to say about that.

  1. Face it, Eddy Eagle is an OFWG. Well, maybe not fat, but he’s definitely an OWG. We let such politically incorrect thought into our schools and the next thing you know these kids will be massacring injuns and stealing land from Mexico. Gotta get with the times.

  2. He helped my 9 year old learn with just one run through. But I am an OFWG so my opinion probably doesn’t count.

    • My 4 year old will sing “Stop. Don’t touch. Run away. Tell a grownup” and ask to see the video of the birds playing basketball. I make sure to give him a booster viewing and discussion before he visits the TX grandparents.

  3. I am very surprised that 26% are allowed to hear about gun safety. Where are the progressive liberal commie Democrat protests? According to them, such lessons are not needed because it has the opposite effect. Besides, the numbers of people who have any interest in firearms is rapidly falling to a more enlightened people who would rather their children be taught about alternative lifestyles children should be exploring.

  4. Ultimately it’s thought control (or attempts at it) that kills.

Gun control is but one symptom of the underlying problem.

    • Ultimately it’s thought control (or attempts at it) that kills.

We don’t need no thought control. Hey! Teachers! Leave those kids alone!

  5. This is total BS. If I weren’t seemingly banned from commenting here, I would tell you that Eddie Eagle IS NOT EFFECTIVE. Kids trained with that stupid program only learn to check to see if an adult is present before playing with unsecured firearms. That’s not editorializing. It’s been scientifically upheld. Dr. Lisa Monroe, one of the educators who created Eddie Eagle says that she regrets having any part in it, because it is used to supplant actual preventative measures such as actually keeping your gun away from your children.

    • Some would say the same about “Saying, No to drugs” or “Having Safe Sex” campaigns. Personally, they all worked for me. Eddie’s message is simple, easy to spread, and does not get political for a certain age of kids.

  6. I wonder how many private schools and homeschooling programs are involved in this Eddie Eagle thing. I assume that most people who actually own and carry guns are involved with teaching their children this vital safety material – in some form or other, but I wouldn’t be surprised if lots of others who use alternative education are not.

The “people of the gun” should reach out to them and offer this important program. I never really thought about it, but I’ll talk to the folks at the Christian Academy here and see what they say. Finding the homeschoolers might be more of a challenge. 🙂

  7. I wonder if it’s an issue of schools taking a stance on ‘guns are bad’ or ‘mentioning “guns” is bad’. If people are reading this and haven’t seen Eddie the eagle (Google it, ~5 minute video), it doesn’t preach guns are good or bad, but merely they exist. For kids too young (my kids are 3 and 5) to learn (hands on) gun safety it’s a helpful tool.

  8. Everyone has their own parenting styles, but I think the Eddie program is just stupid. Teaching kids that guns are a horrible dangerous threat that they need to run away from screaming makes no sense to me. I have been shooting since I was very small, as has my daughter. She has her own .22 (she’s 11 now) and I make no effort to hide any of my guns from her. She’s not an idiot, and I don’t treat her like one. As far as this program is concerned a gun may as well be a radioactive bear-snake-shark hybrid with a chainsaw.
