Cops aren’t soldiers. Their front line is our streets and neighborhoods. They don’t face anything the average citizen doesn’t have to also worry about, they just face it more often. So if body armor, ARs, and open carry are their best tools, why shouldn’t the average non felon have them?

If I need an AR on patrol to deal with dangerous armed criminals, then I need one at home too. And so does everyone else.
The AR is too deadly for any civilian, no, the AR is too deadly for model citizens. You can kill too many criminals with an AR, please stop the insanity. Too bad the 5.56 AR15 is not, by any stretch of the imagination, a high-powered rifle. Yes, it’s a rifle, but high powered? Really?
The 7.62×51 AR10 starts to get into the ballpark, but it’s at the lower end of the curve for high-powered rifles. Frankly, until you get to precision rifles firing .300 Win Mag or .338 Lapua you’re really not in the club. IMHO.
