“Deadly events across the United States over the past few years, including, among others, those in Carson City, Nev., Aurora, Colo., and Newtown, Conn., demonstrate the high-powered weapons with which criminals are arming themselves . . . It has become increasingly clear that a pistol and shotgun may not be enough to stop a threat to innocent citizens.” Oh wait. Sorry. I missed a bit. Let’s try that again. “It has become increasingly clear that a pistol and shotgun may not be enough for an officer to stop a threat to innocent citizens. This policy change is in the best interest of public and officer safety.” Sorry about that tennessean.com. Better?

  1. “This is the appropriate measure to make sure officers AND CITIZENS have the tools they need.”

  2. Cops aren’t soldiers. Their front line is our streets and neighborhoods. They don’t face anything the average citizen doesn’t have to also worry about, they just face it more often. So if body armor, ARs, and open carry are their best tools, why shouldn’t the average non felon have them?

    • Well said.

Although I kind of miss the Marine Corps. Except for the pay. And the sh!tty food. And cleaning an immaculate weapon for hous on end. Fat girls in the E club. Ah, memories…

  3. Just like Outlaw said perfect.

We need them because evil exist and it exist in more than one person or government!

  4. We are our own first responders. If it took 20 minutes for the cops to respond to a school massacre how long will it take for them to respond for a call for help from an OFWG in a town that’s cutting back services?

The carjacking victim in Texas. The killer shot him, left, and then doubled back to finish the job. I wonder if that boy was a supporter of gun control. When he saw his death coming I wonder did that affirm to him that we needed tougher gun laws or I wonder did he wish he had a gun to respond with?

  5. Ask the Korean shop owners that protected their businesses during the “Rodney King” riots in LA in the 1990’s if they would have traded their AR rifles for something else.

  6. If I need an AR on patrol to deal with dangerous armed criminals, then I need one at home too. And so does everyone else.

  7. The AR is too deadly for any civilian, no, the AR is too deadly for model citizens. You can kill too many criminals with an AR, please stop the insanity. If there are riots in NY I really expect the PD to follow them around so they aren’t shot by no good gun owners protecting themselves. I never thought I needed an AR untill o said its a must have, Randy

  8. Too bad the 5.56 AR15 is not, by any stretch of the imagination, a high-powered rifle. Yes, it’s a rifle, but high powered? Really?

The 7.62×51 AR10 starts to get into the ballpark, but it’s at the lower end of the curve for high-powered rifles. Frankly, until you get to precision rifles firing .300 Win Mag or .338 Lapua you’re really not in the club. IMHO.
