How is something like this even legal?
I would think that this would be highly questionable legally, most everywhere. If it is loaded with blanks and mounted up high, pointing up, in a rural area, it might be legal. Were someone to be injured (in Virginia and Ohio for sure) it would be considered an illegal firearm trap. That is a felony.
I’ve seen similar devices that were well over 100 years old. Meant to be loaded with real ammo and half-buried in the dirt with bait tied to the trigger wire. Varmint traps. Mostly 4-legged kind. Nothing new.
This didn’t come from a Paladin Press book, did it? One of their handbooks on improvised weapons (hopefully out of print now) featured designs and parts lists for electrified pitchforks, freon-injection spiked clubs, and blackpowder lightbulb bombs.
