Weekend Digest: Mixed Bag Edition

Because it’s the weekend, I’m leading off with a video. Just a quick one of 22Plinkster neatly severing a piece of swinging dental floss, with slow-mo. We loves the slow-mo, don’t we precious?

Several months back we told you about Liberty Safe’s SafElert system, a small wifi-enabled box that you could install in your safe that would notify you if your safe (any safe) is jarred, hit, pried, moved, opened, over heated, the handle is jostled or most anything else out of the ordinary, as well as sending you weekly humidity reports from inside the safe. Now from The Tactical Wire comes an announcement that Liberty Safe is doing away with the monthly monitoring fee (formerly about $40/year). Once the $199 device is purchased, e-monitoring services will be free for the life of the unit. Most of the objections last time had little to do with price, and more to do with Big Brother, but hey, more money for ammo, right?

BRADENTON, FL (December 2013) – Liberty Ammunition, global leader in high performance, lead-free ammunition for military, law enforcement, personal defense and the hunting markets, has announced a second shift for production of ammunition. Liberty Ammunition’s Civil Defense line of personal defense ammunition for civilians and law enforcement personnel is available in 9mm +P, .45 ACP +P, .40 S&W and .380 Auto. The .223 Silverado ammunition, Liberty’s first round in their new hunting line, is included in the increased production runs. Embattled farmers met at Concord Bridge to confront British regulars who had marched from Boston in the dark of night in order to seize their firearms. There, they fired “The Shot Heard Round the World.” Patriots in Concord, NY will fire a symbolic shot at noon, Jan. 11, 2014, to protest the first anniversary of the NYS Safe Act, passed in the dark of night. The Springville Field and Stream Club (Springville, NY) is urging gun owners throughout New York state to fire their symbolic shot, The Shot Heard Throughout New York State, at noon, too. All gun owners, hunters and shooters will fire in a legal, safe manner. [Wouldn’t it be cool if there wasn’t anywhere in the state that you couldn’t hear a gunshot at noon on the 11th?] [h/t: John B]

In Redding, CT on Thursday, two images of guns posted to local teens’ Instagram feeds prompted a police response. In the first incident, a 13 year old boy posted an image of two handguns above a caption that read “I think I’m ready to go to school.” Police immediately located the boy and determined that the pictured guns were pellet guns, but the boy was still charged with disorderly conduct and released to his parents. In the second incident, the student posted a photo of a revolver with the caption “Colt Anaconda .357. Damn I love revolvers.” Redding police investigated and learned the boy had pulled the photo from the internet and did not actually have access to it, so crisis averted, I suppose. That teen will not face charges. But… Disorderly conduct, really?

Doug Koenig, champion (over and over again) competition shooter, takes us through the process of crafting a Smith & Wesson Performance Center 1911. It’s thinly veiled advertising, I know, but it’s still interesting to see a little of what goes into making them. [h/t ENDO]

  1. Ok, so now what happens to any law enforcement or military member who has to undergo mandatory psychiatric or psychological counseling, for whatever reason. Should they never be allowed to carry a firearm again? If they are, then what’s the difference between the mental health treatment they are getting compared to the mental health treatment that a private citizen gets? That’s the argument that needs to be made.

  2. I lived in Iceland for two years. Nice place, good for raising families. Yes, sporting good stores sell rifles and shotguns. Handguns are restricted to mainly “TARGET” shooting models, basically large barrels and LARGE almost comical looking grips. There are plenty of regular type handguns, both revolvers and pistols in circulation, owned by private citizens and were GRANDFATHERED prior to the implementation of draconian handgun laws around 1995/1996. These handgun owners need permits for each and everyone of the handguns owned. Some of these permit cards are quite extensive and rather thick depending on how many weapons one is permitted to own. Yes, there are extensive and bureaucratic police checks, mental health checks and employment checks if you would like to purchase a long gun or obtain a target pistol. Ammunition is expensive, REALLY expensive, so a lot of the Icelanders who shoot on a regular basis re-load as a regular habit, which is a good lesson for all of us in general.

Just about every major city and town in Iceland has a shooting club, http://www.sr.is/ Some of these clubs have indoor ranges in the basements of apartment complexes. Icelanders are quite talented and participate in international, mainly European, sport shooting competitions. Icelanders are generally an independent lot and have no standing Army or Navy, but do have a small Coast Guard and were/are coalition partners in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The police in Iceland are by and large an unarmed police force and the national SWAT team is called the Viking Squad who are armed. There is some growing violence among recent newcomers, Poles and Lithuanians, who have exhibited a propensity to use firearms, illegally obtained, in the commission of their crimes. Non-firearm related violent crimes involve such things as knives, swords, bats and clubs. In case you were wondering Iceland also has KNIFE CONTROL and you need a permit for certain types of edged weapons.

  3. I can’t help but thing that while this administration has made ‘health care’ it’s crusade they honestly are not doing ANYTHING to help people with mental heath issues. The only exception to that being some talk about trying to make it ‘harder for crazy people to get guns’.

Seems like proof that they’re perfectly willing to pick and choose issues to further their political agenda. Same old same old.

  4. Nice rifle I’m sure but wow, too rich for my blood. I’ve long since planned on getting a Savage Precision Carbine as my second boltgun (first one being a Mosin)

  5. Since Mother Jones presumably supports the gun ban lobby, they can go f*** themselves. You and I can have a beer and talk about Morton Stanley’s adventures and personal qualities — they may not participate.

  6. No, just stick with the “No Firearms Allowed” sign on the front door. That’s done such a good job of keeping mentally disturbed people from walking into the school and shooting children in the past. Just stick with what’s working.
