Ah yes, Labor Day weekend. The unofficial end of summer. Football is back on the tube. The first leaves are starting to fall (well not here in Austin, but somewhere). You can feel he promise of better shooting weather. And the second semi-annual Knob Creek machine gun shoot and confab’s not far off.
Of course, if you’re planning to attend the fall shoot, you’ll wan to maximize your time on the line with all that fun full-auto paraphernalia by making yourself familiar with as many those bullet hoses as possible.
Hell, even if you’re not going, you probably need an excuse to get away from three solid days spent in close proximity to the family for a little “me time.”
So why not sit back and enjoy a lesson in how to operate the venerable M60 machine gun, presented with all the panache and verve you’d expect from a US Army-produced training film?

The M60 is the result of a FG42 and a MG42 having too much schnapps and Jagermeister and ending up in bed together.
The US Army was going to copy the MG42 but there was a problem with the prototype. Someone forgot there was 6mm difference between 8mm Mauser and .30-06.
8mm – 7.62mm = 0.38mm not 6mm
He might be referring to the difference in case length. The 7.9 had a 57mm long case and the 06 had a 63mm long case.
Can’t count the number of miles I had humped a 60 around… but she was always a lot of fun to shoot off the bipod and even from the shoulder….. all that 7.62 “rock and roll” goodness knocking holes in stuff.

If only we could get rid of NFA and that stupid Hughes amendment. Artificial supply and demand means that I will do without one of those toys, the price for the third selector position is way out of reasonable range for me.

I really miss the days of unlimited ammo and repair parts. We use to joke that a typical Army helicopter gunship crew consisted of four young men, average age of 2 years,, flying a $250,000 helicopter (1966 prices) with modern armament, unlimited ammo including rockets and linked 40mm grenades, vast territories designated as “free fire” zones and if you screwed up and broke the helicopter?
They gave you a brand new one with brand new guns and rocket pods.
I very much miss my youth.
Just yesterday I heard a sound that we never forget. A Huey coming towards my house. I looked out and sure enough there it went over my neighberhood. Doors missing and in a brown and green paint scheme. Don’t know if it was active, gaurd or privately owned.
In the bay area we see all types of flying machines.

I noticed that.
Shot one of those in the Army a LONG time ago. But just in training. Fun to shoot though. Would not want to pack it around but I bet the firepower was great for those that needed it. 50 is even better of course but for packing that beast you needed a truck, an APC or a Tank. At least that was the case when I was in training.
I don’t think that the gunners mate feeding the belt is in a very realistic position.

The 2nd Amendment was put into the Constitution so the people could protect themselves from a corrupt government. That is why it says “shall not infringe” so we can have what the government has to prevent a Holocaust. I believe the people should have what the government has including machine guns. The .50 ma deuce was waaaaay better. Mother bumper to carry round, but I was a 64clutch and 88mickey mouse so all I had to hump it was from the truck to the foxhole and back. Easier to operate, and waaaay simpler to breakdown and clean. Of course not even the Rambo types would try to hip fire that sucker. No assistant gunner crazy enough to hold the thing up for me…errr him. Guess I wasn’t Rambo enough, but putting BIG holes it trucks a thousand meters off in it own Germany was awesome as all get out.
Ohhhh and that video was about as boring as I remember all the Army’s training films were. Might be why I never got any further than I did while I was in.
