It’s hard to know how much of this account [from the FreedomWorks Texas Summit in Austin, TX] is shameless self-promotion and how much is the God’s own truth. Either way, it’s certainly true that American gun owners’ political activism has worked to stem the surge of gun control—so far. On the federal level. In others, in blue states like New York, Maryland and California, in purple states like Colorado, defending Americans’ Constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms against government infringement may come down to a vote at the United States Supreme Court. For gun owners behind enemy lines without a Senator like Cruz, a strict definition of the Heller decision’s “reasonable regulations” can’t come soon enough. In theory.
The more I see this man speak, the more I would really like to see him run for Pres. He already has more creds than Barry.

He’s a solid candidate. I really hope that the DNC is stupid enough to put up somebody to the far left. They are really alienating the moderates in this country and a relatively moderate (comparing to the neo-cons) Republican can probably take a good chunk of the moderate vote.
Personally, I hope to see him on the supreme court before he’s 50, so he can be there for many years!

Legally, it does not matter. There is solid precedent that would allow him to run.
Can you imagine? Republicans freaked out in 2008 over where Obama was born. If Cruz won then there would be massive cries of hypocrisy. I don’t think he could stand a chance.

@pwrserge, there is no direct precedent since the issue hasn’t really come up. There’s nothing on all fours with a case of a child of a US citizen and a non-citizen born on foreign soil. Obama almost fits the bill, but he was born on US soil.
I tend to think he would be eligible, but I think it would take an act of Congress to be assured of his eligibility.

Does he have a birth certificate that says “US citizen born abroad?” If so, he can run. The Constituion only says natural born citizen, but not have to be born here. My niece was born on a base in Japan, but still can be POTUS because she was born US citizen, not naturalized.
Naturalization law is weird. It depends what year he was born in and if his non-American father claimed him. If he was born after, I think it is, 1976 then it doesn’t matter as long as one parent is/was American. This is why people can claim Obama was not a American due to when he was born even though his mom was American. No “American born abroad” needed on the cert as long as he could show his birth cert and his parents

US Bases are considered US territory. There was a court case back in 03′ that reaffirmed it i believe. I think it was Beaumedine v Bush or something like that.
Congress passed a special act to assure McCain of his eligibility, since he was born in the CZ.

Every time I hear from this guy, I’m even happier I gave him my vote. The fight isn’t over though, folks- nor will it ever be. Don’t let down your guard, or let up on your representatives. Keep them constantly reminded that they work for US, and we CAN fire them if they don’t dot eh job their employers have hired them to do.

Excellent senator who understands that additional gun control is not in the best interest of the American public. The content of both senate bills would have cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars, with negligible benefits. I refuse to support bad legislation simply because the president chastises the American public. We could see a real benefit to public safety by allowing teachers to carry concealed – and taxpayers wouldn’t be stuck with another outrageous bill.
Every time he speaks, I am more thankful that I moved to Texas.
I hope in 14 months I’ll be coming back. I leave occupied territory in a few weeks to Kansas which is a huge relief.

Cruz is a great defender of the second amendment, but he seems to oppose the exclusionary rule, which is key to protecting our fourth amendment right to be free of unreasonable search and seizure (watch starting at 2:35): http://youtu.be/Wi6gZU01yF8
The exclusionary rule stipulates that evidence obtained against you in violation of your Constitutional rights cannot be used against you. Cruz points out that it sometimes means that criminals go free — that’s true, but it’s an unfortunate price we pay to be free.

Regardless, I don’t think a criminal should go free because the exclusionary rule was broken. I think instead, a cop and a prosecutor should go to jail.
The point is what’s establishing that you’re a criminal? The evidence in the case. If the authorities were willing to violate the Constitution to collect that evidence, are we sure that we can trust the evidence itself?

I love living in California. I love the perfect weather, the cultural diversity, the availability of amazing ethnic food, and the gorgeous women. But damned if this issue, this ONE issue may drive me to move to the muggy, buggy, and sluggish South. Please SCOTUS, take up gun control soon!

Yep, California isn’t the only state in the west–though it is pretty much ruining the image of the West Coast all by itself.
There’s a lot of territory out here where you can enjoy a true four-season climate and a gun-friendly culture.
Utah and Idaho are right there together at the bottom of the Brady ratings, which we all know is A Good Thing. If you want mountains and/or desert, you can find plenty of beautiful examples in either place.
Or if you want someplace a little more laid-back and laissez-faire (not to say liberal) when it comes to social mores, Washington and Oregon are also great states for gun owners. Portland and Seattle have their share of progressive ninnies, but you can still enjoy urban life (if you’re into that) *and* the Second Amendment at the same time there.
Then there’s Montana and Wyoming…thriving gun culture and lots of great rural places, if you can deal with the desolate winters. Western Montana is beautiful.
