The Violence Policy Center’s Slanted, Racist Take on Black and Brown Gun Owners

The Violence Policy Center (VPC) on Monday released a 39-page report about the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the gun industry as a whole. The gun control group takes issue with the NSSF and NRA “targeting” blacks and Latinos as first-time gun owners… “Mr. Sugarmann’s theories that the firearm … Read more

At Least 2500 People Shot Since Las Vegas Spree Killing. And At Least 3900 Defensive Gun Uses

“nvolt’s been three weeks since the October 1 massacre in Las Vegas, the worst mass shooting in modern American history,” Jennifer Mascia (not shown) and Alex Yablon write at thetrace.org. “In that time, at least 2,545 more people have been shot across America, 772 of them fatally, according to the Gun Violence Archive.” Setting aside the … Read more

IMI Systems Quote of the Day: Concealed Carry Killers?

“Concealed carry permit holders are supposed to be the ‘good guys with guns,’ but our research shows that far too often the opposite is true. Permit holders don’t stop mass shootings, they commit them. They don’t help protect law enforcement officers, they kill them.” – VPC Legislative Director Kristen Rand in More Than 1,100 Non-Self Defense Deaths … Read more

VPC: “Open Carry Thugs Terrorizing Americans”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPOlbP68bAc

Josh Sugarmann of the Violence Policy Center (VPC) has penned another polemic conflating facts with opinion, anecdotes with analysis. In other news, the sun came up this morning. Still, you gotta give Sugarmann credit for reaching new heights of hypocrisy and misdirection. Let’s start at the end. “When the issue is life and death, feelings should never trump facts,” Sugamann concludes. “Even when there’s an armed mob arguing otherwise.” Anyone even vaguely familiar with the VPC crusader’s writings, whether at the Huffington Post or at kentucky.com, knows that Sugarmann’s plea for a rational debate on gun control is as credible as Kim Kardashian calling for new privacy laws. For proof we need only contemplate the end of that sentence—armed mobs?— or return the beginning of Sugarmann’s rant . . .

Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence Takes Aim At Eddy the Eagle

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Violence doesn’t like Eddy the Eagle. Neither do I; the bird’s eyebrow work creeps me out. But the Brady Bunch have a different beef. They agree with The Violence Policy Center that “The primary goal of the National Rifle Association’s Eddie Eagle program is not to safeguard children, but to protect the interests of the NRA and the firearms industry by making guns more acceptable to children and youth . . . The hoped-for result is new customers for the industry and new members for the NRA.” In case you missed that, the NRA is “Joe Camel with feathers.” Brady Prez Paul Helmke’s latest blog asserts that “the cartoon bird provides a kid-friendly excuse to oppose stronger laws that would keep guns away from children — laws requiring adults to safely store their firearms out of the reach of children, for example . . .

Violence Policy Center: “Concealed Carry Killers” March Update

[HTML]

“Because most state systems that allow the carrying of concealed handguns in public by private citizens release little data about crimes committed by permit holders, the VPC [Violence Policy Center] reviews and tallies concealed handgun permit holder killings primarily as reported by news outlets. It is likely that the actual number of fatal incidents involving concealed handgun permit holders is far higher.” If you can’t see anything wrong with that statement, you’ll probably take the VPC’s most recent conclusions about conceal carry firearm fatalities at face value. The fact that the March update doesn’t actually include a March-specific update should raise some skepticism. In any case, Violence Policy Center Legislative Director Kristen Rand goes for it:
