Growing Up (Mostly) Gun-less

I am a child of Television. It’s true. Most kids first words are “Mama!” or “Da-da!” Mine was “Popeye.” I am not making this up. I grew up on a steady diet not of ABCs and phonics, but of ABC, NBC, and CBS. I watched everything from Captain Kangaroo and Kukla, Fran and Ollie, to Eliot Ness and Matt Dillon. As such, I was intimately acquainted with guns. Six guns. Shotguns. Lever action carbines. Tommy guns. You name it, and I saw it on TV. And of course, growing up in the 1960s, guns were a regular part of my play. I had that Mattel belt buckle with a derringer in it, where if I pushed out my stomach, I could flip it out and fire it at the bad guys. I had a Mattel M-16 Marauder (a.k.a. a toy M-16/AR-15). I even had a toy Thompson submachine gun. So riddle me this, Batman: why did it take until I hit my mid-forties, before I bought my first handgun and learned how to shoot?

Dear Diary: 30 Days to Conceal Cary, Weekend Edition

Like a large segment of the population, I’m a divorced dad. Not by choice. But one of the things you learn in divorce is that you don’t always have a choice. This weekend was “visitation weekend,” that once- or twice-monthly ritual that single parents go through to see their kids, when they live a-ways away from their children. Because of the distances involved, that means a road trip, with a side order of kid involvement. Bring on the gun education!

Video Review: Learn Gun Safety with Eddie Eagle. Or Not.

Small kids need to know that guns are not toys. That’s the message of the National Rifle Association video Learn Gun Safety with Eddie Eagle. It teaches kids who find a gun to leave it alone. Go tell an adult. Even if you think it might be a toy, just leave it be. Pro-gun and less-than-pro-gun parents will love Eddy; the gun safety lesson is about as vanilla as you can get when talking about deadly weapons. But I’m a 12-year-old. Does the NRA’s message fly with kids my age and older? Two words: Eddy’s grounded.

Readin’, ‘Ritin”, ‘Rithmatic, Rifles & Revolvers

My days in elementary school predate “New Math,” “Outcome-Based Education” and “Moral Relativism.” Back in the day, it was all about Readin,’ ‘Ritin,’ and ‘Rithmatic. But unlike most nouveau educational schemes, the State of Virginia has recently signed into law a new act that will add “Rifles” and “Revolvers” to the three “R”s. And that’s a good thing. As reported by Fox News (who else?), Governor Bob McDonell signed a bill into law that mandates a firearms education curriculum for schools. Liberal outrage was swift, certain, and dare I say, predictable.
