I have to assume that someone who points a gun at me has at least some desire to shoot me. The bad guy could, in fact, really want to shoot me, for reasons I’ll never know. Because I’ll be dead.

In the last few years I read a claim:
If an attacker is pointing a firearm at you at contact distance and you are going to try to disarm your attacker, ask your attacker a question right before attempting to disarm him/her. The attacker’s mental process to formulate an answer and communicate it allegedly slows their reaction time — possibly enough to enable you to get hands-on and point the barrel just barely away from your body before they can pull the trigger.
I searched casually for anything that seemed to corroborate that claim and I did not find anything. I even tried my own experiment with family members to see if I could measure an increase in their reaction time and I did not see any noticeable increase in their reaction time.
Does anyone know of any trustworthy sources that can corroborate that claim?

I have no reservations about attempting a disarm if the gun is close enough. It is not that I am brave or particularly skilled it just seems easy enough and I lost most of my fear of dying years ago. I’d also really really like to kill anyone asshole enough to threaten other people so. I do practice with friends from time to time as well. I am not a man of faith but I am at peace with the notion that I am going to die and that it could be sooner rather than later. time.
A domestic abuser who is determined to maim/kill their “partner” will have no trouble succeeding with countless methods that do not require a firearm. Not to mention the fact that the abuser could easily have additional firearms hidden and available at another (undisclosed) location.
Focusing on disarming the subjects of a restraining order is simply wasting limited resources.
And then there is the whole problem with depriving someone of their rights before allowing them to confront their accusers and without a verdict from a jury of their peers.

What makes you think journalists are especially inept when writing about firearms? They get lots of other stuff wrong, too. Like most people, journalists are competent in a few fields but incompetent otherwise. Unfortunately for the subjects of their stories, it’s their job to write whether they are competent or not. I do agree that the least they could do is check with their sources for factual accuracy. They are either too rushed or too lazy to do that.
One core competency of any journalist writing in the United States should be English composition. I see errors in spelling, grammar and word usage with dismaying frequency. Too many of them write at the level of high school dropouts.
what is this country coming too when you now have to defend yourself in court for shooting a dangerous wild animal. I suppose the moose came from a broken home and now the moose’s family will sue the maker of the gun and the shooter.and also the ammo used. and also accuse the shooter of using that ammo because it was more deadly. how about the shooter sue for damages and mental stress he had to go through because of all the money this cost him and that this should have never seen the inside of a court. and he should also sue because the ones responsible for taking him to court are too stupid and liberal to have the job they have. and sue the judge as well because any good judge would have seen this for what it is and dropped the case against him. we really have to start standing up for our rights and deal with these idiots and put them in their place.

I think you will find that the vast majority of the 81,000 either don’t live in NY anymore, are deceased, or don’t own the gun anymore. I don’t think the pistol permit database has been updated since it’s conception.
