Self Defense Tip: Carry a Bible

While the good book may be beneficial for the soul, it can also be pretty handy when it comes to protecting your chest. “Rickey Waggoner, a Dayton RTA bus driver, was making a mechanical fix outside his bus when three assailants approached him and shot him in what appears to have been a gang initiation, the Dayton Daily News reported….Waggoner reportedly told police that one of the assailants was heard telling another to kill the man ‘if you want to be all the way in the club.'” We’re pretty sure we know where Rickey will be this Sunday morning . . .

More from

Waggoner was shot twice in the chest at close range, but a contemporary version of the Bible, titled “The Message,” absorbed the bullets that would otherwise have killed the 49-year-old bus driver, according to police documents obtained by the newspaper.

In the interest of promoting peace and brotherly love, we’ll avoid speculation as to the caliber the yoots were using. Despite being unarmed, though, Waggoner didn’t turn the other cheek.

Waggoner was shot in the leg after he tried to wrestle the weapon away from one of the suspects, according to the newspaper. While another assailant stabbed him in the arm, Waggoner was able to grab both the gun and knife, prompting the suspects — described as being 15 to 18 years old — to flee.

While it’s probably prohibited by his employer, The Message here appears to be praise the Lord and pass the concealed carry pistols.

    Any word on the caliber?

    1. avatar Curtis in IL says:

I recall a news article reporting the assailant used a 30 caliber magazine clip and emptied it in half a second.

    2. avatar CharlesT says:

A story from the AP would suggest that the caliber was a .25 ACP since police recovered a .25 Caliber Handgun at the scene. If so it is not surprising that a one inch thick anything stopped the bullets. What is surprising is that the perp maintained a grouping the size of the book.

      1. avatar Steve in MD says:

        .25 ACP?

      2. avatar peirsonb says:

He missed the memo about spreading your shots out around the torso.

It sounds like the police should take some shooting lessons on marksmanship from the gangbangers.

      4. avatar Cliff H says:

I had a friend in Dayton years ago shot twice in the chest/abdomen with a .25, then went on to a long career in the Cincinnati Police department.

Another report at the same time in Dayton was a rather heavy set man (fat) who answered his door to be confronted by his GF’s ex and a .25. He took six shots to the body and was fine until a shot in the mouth knocked him unconscious. He also survived with only minor surgery and some dental work.

This was about the time I upgraded from my cheap Raven to an S&W Model 19.

      5. avatar S.CROCK says:

an iPad stopped a .40. it hit at an angle so regardless of caliber it all depends on the angle.

    3. avatar ropingdown says:

Of the perps? Yep. Low caliber, headed for lower.

  6. avatar Dev says:

Surprisingly, the local police are investigating this attack as a possible hate crime. I say surprisingly because the victim is white and the attackers are allegedly black.

    1. avatar Ike says:

I had heard this too. I work about 20 minutes from where this happened, and a few of my LEO friends were saying that the assailants will be charged with a hate crime. Apparently one of them said something about “let’s kill this polar bear” or some such nonsense. Glad to see these hate crimes can go both ways for once.

      1. avatar Evan in Dallas says:

I actually wish the “hate crime” charge would go away all together. The motivation for a crime should not matter. Only the action itself should matter. Hating someone for some superficial reason is no doubt douchy, but you do have that right. Attacking them for it and then getting an increased sentence is pretty much saying that “thoughts” can be a crime.

        1. avatar Big John says:

agreed. when you boil it down, EVERY crime is a hate crime. there should be no distinction.

        2. avatar Rokurota says:

But we need crimes to be even more illegal!

        3. avatar jwm says:

Evan, what about in cases where the attack or crime would never have happened except for the race, religion or sexuality of the victim?

      2. avatar Mister Fleas says:

        Yep, hate crime.

        From the article:

“Police believe the shooting may have been a gang initiation after Wagoner told investigators that one of the suspects said ‘we need to shot a polar bear to get in a club.’”

Wagoner is white, his attackers are black.

    2. avatar Dave says:

It can be a hate crime if the victim’s white? Do they allow that?

  9. avatar BDub says:

“There was obviously some kind of intervention involved in this incident because (Waggoner) should probably not be here,”

Yeah, HE intervened on his own behalf and that’s why he is still here. Why do people insist on crediting invisible old guys or inanimate objects with all the responsibility, rather than the people involved. I’m certain that if the almighty can guide a bible into the path of a bullet or vice versa, he could have maybe just not had the bus break down in the first place.

    1. avatar Evan in Dallas says:

I don’t think that was the point. The point was we always read a story or see a movie where a bible over someone’s heart saves them, and here is a case where that pretty much happened in real life. God can have as much or as little to do with it as you want. I as a church goer think of it as being more of a case of, “odds are it was bound to happen some time.”

    2. avatar KCK says:

Or make the round a squib and let the perp try to fire a second with the first bullet stuck in the tube.

I alternate my EDC bullet stopping ironical miracle books between Dawkins, The God Delusion and Hitchens, God is not Great. (Paper back)
I guess Lott’s, More Guns, Less Crime would do the trick as well, but that wouldn’t be a miracle would it.

    1. avatar lolinski says:

When I need protection I simply use the Norwegian law. Book is thick enough to stop pretty much anything level 3A would. And if you hit them with it, you can say you threw the book on them.

      1. avatar S.CROCK says:

if i need a book to stop a bullet, i usually use my cali gun law book. its rated for anything .308 or lower.

  11. avatar Bernard says:

Btw, “Turn the other cheek” is interpreted in different meanings.

  13. avatar Ralph says:

Instead of a bible, atheists may choose to carry a copy of “Stranger in a Strange Land.”

    1. avatar Mark N. says:

And when your copy stops a bullet, you will be able to say that truth is stranger than fiction.

    2. avatar JaredFromTampa says:

I think “Atlas Shrugged” would be more appropriate. The paperback version is what, like 3,000 pages?

    3. avatar ropingdown says:

Being a True Witness I can report that had he read it, he wouldn’t be driving a bus.

  16. avatar former water walker says:

Believe what you want to. BTW …why are vile attacks on this website allowed pertaining to Christian beliefs?

    1. avatar Ralph says:

      WTF are you talking about?

      1. avatar Tietonian says:

The moderators don’t see blasphemy of God as worthy of deletion. That might be what he is talking about.

        1. avatar Ralph says:

Okay, then, WTF are you talking about?

        2. avatar Tietonian says:

To a Christian, denying Gods existence, and mocking those who believe in him is considered blasphemous. I personally do not think such comments should be deleted. Just trying to explain to you (Ralph) what I interpreted his comment to mean.

        3. avatar lolinski says:

Can you come up with any examples?

        4. avatar Tietonian says:

No, not at the moment. I think this question should be addressed to FWW. It is he who is mad about something.

    2. avatar ThomasR says:

That’s OK FFW; I’m a baptized Christian and I have spoken a number of times about abortion being murder with out being attacked for making that statement or about being a Christian. I found most of the comments to be rather funny; especially about an atheist using “Stranger in a strange land” for chest protection; one of my favorite books by RAH by the way.

      1. avatar Tietonian says:

I also have noticed that the abortion debates on this site are rather polite. Unsurprisingly, Glockentoter occasionally spews vileness towards Christianity.

        1. avatar Ralph says:

Glockentoter occasionally spews vileness towards Christianity

I’m no fan of that guy, but “spews vileness towards Christianity?” Really? Could you be any more melodramatic?

        2. avatar Tietonian says:

Not trying to be melodramatic. Borrowed the word from FWW above.
Forgive me if I’ve irritated you.

        3. avatar ropingdown says:

I’m with General Boykin on the issue. There are times when it’s OK to think “I know my god is better than their god.” For example when their behavior shows that their god must be a crack head.

  17. avatar uncommon_sense says:

Say, that brings up an interesting question. What material could someone use to improvise a “ballistic panel” that is fairly lightweight and capable of stopping most handgun rounds? When I say lightweight, I am thinking that a 10 inch x 14 inch book (3 inches thick) would be too heavy.

    1. avatar Ralph says:

What material could someone use to improvise a “ballistic panel” that is fairly lightweight and capable of stopping most handgun rounds?

A human shield would work quite well and is self-propelled to boot.

If somebody shoots at you and your buddy, get behind your buddy.

    2. avatar maiko says:

    3. avatar ropingdown says:

1/4 inch Kevlar panel material is readily available. Doubled up it fits your description. It’s light, and is used to ‘bullet proof’ car panels and briefcases. I have one such which is my designated “go to Southwest Detectives/Lockup at 2 a.m.” briefcase. I rarely carry it.

  18. avatar Paul53 says:

I’m also a water boarded Christian, and still confused by the religious stuff above.

    1. avatar Tietonian says:

Sorry, probably should have just kept my mouth shut. And I’m stealing “water boarded Christian.”

    2. avatar ropingdown says:

I’m with the late Martin Luther on this. He once complained bitterly to the local prince about the “murderous hordes of thieving peasants.” And who could blame him? The ninety-five theses were fine, but that quote convinced me he was the right man to lead the reformation. The bus driver’s probably on board now, too.

  19. avatar m1 says:

The only intervention that will be taking place is Rickey going to prison. Haven’t you heard Rickey Wagoner made the whole thing up. Shot and stabbed himself. Shot his own bible. Yet all of you just totally accepted this racist lie ,because he said Blacks attacked me. I hope all of you feel stupid.

    1. avatar Vhyrus says:

Already been posted. Might want to check the front page occasionally.

  20. avatar m1 says:

    To Vhyrus,
Who posted that the racist liar was a liar before me on this site? Still doesn’t change that he was able to sell this story dud to saying Blacks did it.
