Quote of the Day: And the Horse You Rode In On Edition

“Agreeing to the (UN) treaty does more than trample Second Amendment rights. It also threatens to erode all liberties guaranteed to Americans in the Constitution by establishing the precedent that the UN has some level of authority to govern our lives.” – letter from Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott to President Obama [via foxnews.com]

  1. This whole brouhaha about the UN treaty is just rank ignorance and fear mongering.

First of all, no treaty of any kind can trump the constitution, and there are SCoTUS precedents going back 2 centuries that clearly define that.

Second of all, no treaty is valid unless it’s ratified by 2/3 of the Senate. They voted on this treaty a couple of weeks ago and it was soundly voted down. No matter how much the Administration wants to endorse this treaty, until they get 66 votes in Senate, it’s never going to be binding in any way.

Lastly, the wording of the treaty itself says that each state has the right to regulate and control conventional arms within its own territory. On top of that, the the new provisions of the treaty have no teeth…there is no policing mechanism equivalent to the international criminal court. Even if we were to violate the treaty, all other member states can do is use harsh language in response.

There is plenty of proposed legislation, and actual legislation, that are a real danger to our rights. We don’t need to invent pseudo dangers to go with them.

    • The biggest impact that can be made to defend the 2A at this time is to call your Senator’s office today, leave a message over the weekend or even better call Monday morning and demand that they oppose all gun control proposals headed for the floor next week. The number for the Senate switchboard is (202) 224-3121. Universal Background Checks lead to Confiscation! Stop them now.

  2. they adjusted the features test in the bill as a concession to Beretta to make their new rifle legal. And they leave anyway. It’s like a double F-U to O’Malley.

Honestly, good – the people of Maryland need to wake up and understand what the legislators really stand for. Maybe now they will finally understand. And i can say this because I am cautiously optimistic that much of this will be struck down, and because the bill has many loopholes anyway.

  3. I would love to see Kali turn a new shade of purple on this. But let me ask ya this – how is it Kalifornians can get their asses to the pols over Gays, but have let their gun rights slip into oblivion? Until this State seriously reconsiders it social priorities it will just get worse.

  4. I know everybody is kind of crapping on this thing… But I still want one. It’s a weakness, I know, but I have a thing for Bizarre guns, useful or not. I love the answers to questions that were never asked. For that reason alone, with the price as cheap as it is, I want one of these in my collection just for the conversation value.

  5. “Question: why isn’t anyone in the mainstream media putting the UC cop shop in their figurative crosshairs?”

Because the UC cop shop is part of the state which elevates them to god status — thus by definition they can do no wrong.

I have a better question. Our U.S. Constitution specifically prohibits government from granting titles of nobility to anyone. And yet that is exactly what police officers are because there is a separate and much more lenient set of laws for them. Can we nullify all of the “exceptions” for police in the bazillions of firearms laws under the Constitution’s prohibition of titles of nobility?
