New Mexico State football helmet, compete with Pistol Pete (courtesy usatoday.com)

Here’s the new helmet design for the New Mexico State football team. Not the best rendition of Pistol Pete (based on cowboy Frank Eaton) I’ve ever seen, but it’s nice to see that political correctness hasn’t hobbled the Aggies’ mascot. Yet. I wonder whether Smith & Wesson or Ruger might like to sponsor the team . . .

  1. I think a S&W sponsorship would first require the Aggies to render a safety lock on their pistol.

    • my friend’s aunt makes $83 hourly on the laptop. She has been unemployed for eight months but last month her payment was $13781 just working on the laptop for a few hours. Go to this web site and read more… CAℕ99.COM

  2. This ought to be interesting… In New Mexico, we are mostly out of the attention of mass media and coastal-based activists. Wonder if they’ll pick up on it or just say, “screw it, it’s New Mexico State after all. no one will care.” Symptomatic of a land with more lizards than people (and we like it that way).

    • Old, disparaging term for students who attend an “agricultural (and mechanical)” school or college. Some states in this part of the country have old colleges that were once known as Agrigcultural and Mechanical shools (example, Texas A&M, shortened over the years) that had names changed over the years, but the students are still referred to as Aggies, who while they may often be the butt of many so-called Aggie jokes may still be a source of pride as a label to those who attended that school.

What does an Aggie call Cheerios? Donut seeds. (as an example… there are ENDLESS such Aggie jokes).

    • “Aggie may be a diminutive form of Agricultural, which forms part of the name or historical name of many schools, particularly in the United States. The following schools, or a student, alumnus, sporting team or newspaper of one of these schools may be referred to as ‘Aggie’:” -Wikipedia.

Texas A&M’s mascot is the Aggie.

      • I work at Texas A&M, though I did not graduate from here, and before one of the true believers comes and has hysterics let me correct your statement. The mascot of Texas A&M is Reveille, a collie who lives with the Corps of Cadets. The university is the Aggies and has this long explanation of what is an Aggie… blah blah blah.

At any rate if you encounter an A&M Aggie save yourself the pain and don’t mix these things up lest you be treated to a tall class of maroon colored Kool-Aid. Though if you want to annoy them mention that Kansas State University is the original Aggies (Est 1863 as the Aggies) and that A&M are just a bunch of Johnny Come-Lately’s.

        • I was accepted to A&M and in fact attended for a year (didn’t like the school, career path led me to different places, etc).

I was going to mention reveille in the post but deleted it as it wasn’t Germaine to the conversation. Indeed you are correct, however most only know them (am I allowed to say “us?”) as the Aggies.

Revellie when I was there was perpetually scared of anything. She constantly barked during games and yell practice. She was scared of everyone except her handler.

          I *was* class of 2010.

        • That would have been Reveille VII who was retired after a biting incident. Reveille VIII is much calmer. Last summer we saw her wandering our hallways unattended (a huge no-no) and that was an amusing few minutes. Found her handler in one of the offices a little while later.

  3. If you want to see a good rendering of Pistol Pete, look no further than Oklahoma State University. I’m proud to say that OSU’s Pistol Pete proudly wears his six gun and carries his double barrel shotgun at all OSU sporting events. Nothing like a double barrel shotgun blast to bring the Pokes to their feet!

“Proud and immortal, bright shines your name. Oklahoma State, we herald your fame . . . .”

  4. OMG! This is going to encourage college students to carry guns to football games and kill each other OMG! Think of the children! ©

NMSU is now officially my favorite football team. I don’t watch football, but I support them in spirit now.

    • New Mexico has a lot of people of Native American heritage. Guessing a lot of NMSU Aggies are Redskins, and prob own guns. Hard to create any sort of sound bite with that one in a state no one is really aware of (I grew up in NM). Of course, I’m saying this as a gun owning, Navajo-Hispanic-White mix who happens to be a MENSA member who works in advertising in Chicago…

  5. Yep Ruger or Colt (S&W doesn’t make a single action revolver) should proudly sponsor these great kids!

  6. Yeah… BUT! One line of the school fight song promises:
“And if we win this game, we’ll buy a keg of booze
And we’ll drink it to the Aggies ’til we wobble in our shoes!”
    So… guns AND booze!
    Oh the humanity!

    NMSU ’77

  7. GO AGGIES!!! When I lived in northern NM, I rooted for NMSU (in Las Cruces, about an hour from El Paso), because the U of NM coach (Mike Locksley, now an assistant at the University of Maryland) was, and still is, the world’s biggest asshat. He punched one of his assistant coaches once.

    GO AGGIES. GO PISTOL PETE!

  8. Aw shucks. This makes me proud of my alma mater. Good on ya, Aggies! Bout time someone showed some common sense in this country. New Mexicans are conservative and slow to change, or they used to be anyhow. NMSU didn’t vote down the traditional Swastika as the symbol on the cover of the annual Year Book until 1982. It was a traditional symbol found in Anasazi petroglyphs, like the Zia symbol on the NM state flag, and they didn’t feel that a temporary Nazi adoption of an ancient symbol should taint it enough to be abandoned, at least not until the era of political correctness arrived. Hope they stick it out with their mascot’s guns, too. Speaking of which, at Aggie football games, the home team touchdowns, and half time and end of game, are demarked with a howitzer blast from a pound of black powder and wadded up newspaper… the confetti sometimes makes it to the 30 yard line. good times…

  9. NMSU grad here.

There was a point a few years ago when the antis got to them and they switched the logo from a six shooter to a lasso. It really pissed the students off to the point that they unofficially changed his name from pistol pete to brokeback pete. It actually made it onto an episode of oreilly. They finally realised how much money they were losing in merchandising and switched it back.

  10. Haha. My vote for most unoriginal university goes to New Mex St. A&M is the Aggies. OK St. Already has Pistol Pete. Texas Tech has guns up. What’s next? NM State will have a war eagle too?
