We’ve been following the rise of so-called vigilante groups in southern Mexico. In truth, they are revolutionaries: an armed populace rising up against their own government. And why not? The drug cartels own the police and military lock, stock and American-sourced AR-15s. The torture and violence visited upon the locals by drug thugs and government goons alike beggars description. At some point, anyone would grab a gun rather than suffer. We recently posted on the Mexican government’s response to the uprising and predicted that the “legalization” of the “vigilante groups” would go nowhere fast – mandating as it does that the revolutionaries register themselves and their weapons with the federales. True story. borderlandbeat.com reports on the movement’s spread throughout Michoacán [republished after the jump with permission]. At the same time. BB’s running a story on splits between the “self-defense” leaders spearheading the armed revolt. No surprise there. Civil war is a messy business . . .
Self-Defense Movement Advances towards Yurécuaro
January 28, 2014—In the community of Yurécuaro, Michoacán, hundreds of people rose up in arms this Tuesday morning; they said that they were fed up with the injustices carried out against the citizens from organized crime.
It was approximately around 10:00 hours when the movement arose on the streets of the center of the town, which is also the county seat, where most of the economic activity is concentrated in.
Nearby communities have also taken up in arms: El Sabino, Santa Cecilia, Rancho Las Palomas, La Joya and San Antonio. It is expected that during the next few hours, other villages and towns will hopefully join.
Yurécuaro lies between the boundaries of Michoacán and Jalisco. It is in this area where multiple violent acts have been carried out such as kidnappings, the burning of vehicles, extortions, and various executions. For these reasons it is seen as a red flag for security experts, who have not addressed these acts and now its inhabitants, have decided to rise up in arms in order to defend themselves.
Yesterday a leader of the Self-Defense Groups, Estanislao Beltrán, stated that they will not stop advancing and declared “We are going for the 113 municipalities of Michoacán because there is a problem in all of them. It is clear that there are bigger problems in the Tierra Caliente region.”
I’d like to get a glimpse at my Grandfather’s old collection, but my Uncle took it and we’re not on good terms.
But to answer the question, my Marlin 336 30-30, nothing special about it, but Isaved up and bought it used. It’s not pretty, but it’s mine dammit.
They are truly patriots.
Wait, what? They didn’t all sign up with the gummint and register their weapons? I don’t believe it….
Good for them as long as they do not get carried away and start terrorizing the very people they claim to protect.
Unlikely in Michoacán, but possible in some of the poorer areas.
It wouldn’t happen so soon. What I fear might happen is that the revoluçionaries will organize, somebody will appoint himself generalissimo, and we’ll just see another rerun of the same old ancient story.
It’s gonna spill over.
GEE let’s go try the same thing at the same airport and see what happens!
No traction in US because the people recognizing government is in league with criminals. While no where near the crisis in Mexico, should Americans realize our government plan to restrained our liberty, we may take matter in hand as well.
This HAS been covered by mainstream media, but they prefer to use the pejorative term “vigilante”.
Do a google-fu on “mexican vigilantes”, and the hits come rolling in, as if on queue:

As mistakes go, this is a pretty bad one to let out of the factory. I can see a bad primer in a box, but boxfulls of overcharged rounds? Is there no lot testing?
So they want a amnesty for people who are in the United States illegally so they can drain the welfare state and make legal potential terrorists or people carrying illnesses that were eradicated in this nation. But they are against amnesty for legal residents who were screwed by the postal service and their own government.
Good thinking.
Sorry, two most sentimental.. my dad’s early 22 colt woodsman pistol, and the Ithaca 20 gauge single he bought me at age 8 (with a hammer and hinged break open to reload)…. got my first partridge with the latter… my brother got his old J C Higgins 12 guage that was mail ordered in the sane days when FFLs weren’t even a sick thought in any Fellow Traveler’s mind.
I would say what mine is, but in case the goobermint decides to go full retard and do nationwide confiscation, I’ll just be content knowing that it’s mine and no one else has to know about it.
I just received my XDS back from Springfield a few hours ago. They were nice enough to include a extra 7 rd magazine along with the pistol. Guess what?! The magazine does not lock into the magazine well like all other magazines in any other pistol I’ve ever owned. You can’t even feel the mag retention spring offer any resistance. It just pushes in and locks with a forcible clunk. Then I noticed that the grip safety, the very thing that I spent months waiting for Springfield to supposedly improve, does not engage. You can literally depress the trigger without holding the grip safety. I am pissed and have lost confidence in this pistol. I will call Springfield tomorrow for a return authorization, again. I am happy however, that I purchased a S & W Shield while waiting for the XDS to be “improved”. The Shield has been a joy to shoot, with no malfunctions whatsoever. I also own a Springfield XDm 45 which I am very happy with, so I am not biased against Springfield. I do feel however, that they rushed a product into production without fully testing it. I will be selling the XDS as soon as it is returned again from Springfield.
MEXICAN SPRING. spread the word.
How long until Holder sends them guns???
Why do they think anyone wants to register them anyways?
Nice. But a Glock with $2400 worth of ammo and mods is nicer. I can’t afford nice, nor safe queens. When the pinheads at the lottery get around to drawing the correct numbers (mine) I’ll take a dozen.
This could be a cool new feature. A lot of people (myself included) are ignorant of the gun cultures of other countries, and it would be neat to see how gun rights (or a lack thereof) are exercised elsewhere.
Samurai,
Brazil was one of many South American countries to shelter Nazi’s.
We on the other hand only took in scientists who worked on rockets and other stuff (regardless of what they did in the war).. We also gave a pass to the Japanese guy who tortured and killed American POW’s after WWII to get his “scientific” information from using chemical warfare on US prisoners..
We (our leaders) have always been high principled.
The grunt in Afghanistan, the sailor and the low ranked airmen are the only principled people in the military I know and I met way too many high ranked idiots . . .don’t get me started!
A “compromise position.” Uh huh.
I almost stroked out when I read the CAGV press release, talking about “compromise.”
Apparently “compromise” means pass a horrible law, and when people don’t comply, give them more time to comply with the horrible law and pass another horrible law.

Thank you so much for writing this! As a resident of CA the constant bad mouthing by my fellow 2A in the free states is disheartening. My job and all my family resides in CA, I grew up here. Instead of abandoning the state, I continually vote in attempt to bring conservatives into office, and I do my best to spread the joy, knowledge, and safety lessons of being a proud gun owner.
Again, thank you for the support.
The flaw in the logic here is that the thing that causes these lefties to leave those states is the bad economy, not the gun laws.
You could magically make California a gun haven/heaven, but people would still move out of it (maybe even faster because OMG! Guns!), come here, and vote leftist–because the economy will still suck there.
So changing their gun laws would help the GOOD people of these places, but it would not prevent the political kudzu effect from happening.
Having been convicted of a felony involving a firearm, stripped of my rights, lingering for years, and eventually gaining an expungement that returned me to full citizenship, gun rights, concealed carry and all I think I have a perspective that is insightful. I should first say that what I did was be caught in a bar with a gun in Ohio before we made that legal. Second that I have been to jail and I know what that’s like. Third, it was the first and only criminal case I’ve ever faced in my life before or after and fourth, the ONLY crime I was committing was being in a liquor establishment with a gun, if I did the same thing in Ohio today it would be completely legal.
Given all that, if I were a resident of Connecticut (or NY) today I would be so gone so fast that unless I got pulled over on the freeway on my way out they would never even now I’d left. They really will put you in prison for silly things that don’t seem to make sense or even matter. They will threaten you with so much prison time then offer probation for a felony plea that even the best lawyer will tell you to take it. They will lie, plant evidence, steal and every horrible thing you can think of to put you away. Cops and Prosecutors get kudos for arrests and convictions, not upholding the law or the constitution, not for common sense or good judgment.
Get away from places like CT as fast as you can legally drive even if you have to couch surf for housing at your destination. Midland Texas has a huge jobs boom and it’s the same in parts of the Dakotas. Get out of there before you end up a felon. The only other response is to fight when they come for you and you’ll not only loose, we wont be coming to help. We’re already in places where liberty is mostly intact, where the gun laws let us have all of what we need and most of what we want, where we carry concealed on permits easily obtained. There will not be an uprising when local and state police come to take you away in CT, CA, NY and the like. The forces you need will be peacefully and mostly comfortably residing in states that respect their liberty
No general uprising will occur unless there is a federal confiscation. You’re cut off and on your own in the states that pass such laws and remaining there your only reasonable options are to submit to tyranny or get out. If you cannot exercise your liberty of bearing arms exercise your liberty of travel and just get out.
I’ve heard every argument against leaving these states that I can bear: If we don’t fight here it will spread. (Not if you move to a pro 2A state where your vote will count.) I have family here. (Leave and offer them a room to stay in until they can establish themselves in a free state.) My kids are in school. (They are being indoctrinated against the values you hold dear, all the more reason to flee.)
Armed revolution isn’t going to save you in the states that have devolved into tyranny and if you can’t make the effort it takes to leave I seriously doubt you’ll risk property, liberty and life to resist. You surely can’t expect the rest of us to make the ultimate sacrifices when you won’t simply move out of state?
I’m ready for the counter arguments because they are hollow. If money or not displacing your family or anything but liberty is dearer to you then you are already lost. You simply will not do what it takes to be free and thus assume the chains of tyranny with at least acquiescence, if not willfulness.
However if liberty is what you most admire then moving is your first priority. Come to where you can be free and join us in fellowship and in voting to keep our states free for all of us.
Note, anyone who has not already been checking out schools and jobs in a free state can save their blustering; your priorities are off, or you’re fooling yourself, or you’re in fact a fool.
FYI, the economy is fine here in MD. It’s the politicians that suck.
I thought the Zombies were the reanimated corpses of Xtian believers who have risen because Gabriel’s Trumpet sounded.
On a lighter note, there’s speculation that the vampire myths were really about people who got bit by rabid bats, and started acting rabid.
I say we raise an army of millions and invade those states. Win the war by moving our ‘army’ into homes there, getting jobs then voting.
Dude, there ARE NO JOBS. You don’t read so good, do you?
I’m looking forward to the ‘forthwith’ part.
Or he was playing with a gun and. “It went off” so he concocted a story about three muggers.
Wow.
I am incredulous.
Sometimes, I have a difficult time thinking like ‘they’ do.
This is one of those times.
I can’t decide, a frontal lobotomy, or a bottle infrontofme.
“All would be well and good with this, except these blue state expatriates also bring with them their political ideology, too.”
Well, that is a hell of a wide brush. As a California escapee, I can tell you that is inaccurate at best.
Someone please explain how this decision couldn’t be used to easily justify banning semi-auto pistols or revolvers if single shot handguns were still available to the public?
Or pump/semi-auto shotguns if single shots were still legal?
Clearly this is not the right conclusion under Heller …
This guy knows his shit better than a sod farmer! Who is he anyways? I’m a long time lurker, and THIS^^^ is what I want to see more of on TTAG. I don’t mind the politics, but getting some real TRUTH ABOUT GUNS is what I come here for and this author has it down. I bet it wont be long before some big rag picks him up, but after stepping on the toes of REMINGTON, SAVAGE, HODGEDON, and disporving tons of ‘WISDOM’, im sure he made some enemies. If the editors of TTAG read this, you need to get MORE OUT OF THIS AUTHOR! He is by far the best one on TTAG right now, and that’s saying a lot.
hey Josh if you read this, i’d love to pick your brains. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK MAN!!!
Thank you for writing and posting this. This is the message we need to get out to the rest of the country.
$5 donation and an entry into the contest. Friday is off to a good start.
While the others laughed at her for holding “just” a pistol, Sheila couldn’t help but smirk, secure in the knowledge that she was the only one not compensating for a small penis.
