The importance of securing your firearms from children cannot be overstated. When an unsecured firearm leads to a gunshot injury, it’s usually because one child finds the gun and shoots another. But this disaster can unfold in many terrible ways, and a Georgia toddler recently shot his own mother when he found her loaded handgun . . .
23 year-old Joanne Winding thought she saw a prowler outside her Hinesville, GA home on March 26th. The young Army wife retrieved a handgun and loaded it, in case the prowler tried to break in. Nobody tried to break into her home, but Winding failed to secure or unload the handgun before she went back to bed.
‘Oops’ doesn’t quite cover it.
Whether you’re talking guns, gasoline, matches or drain cleaner, nothing on Earth can ferret out trouble like an unsupervised 2 year-old boy. Winding’s toddler apparently found the loaded heater next to her bed, and promptly shot her with it.
Not everybody can be an IGOTD like Mrs. Winding and live to tell the tale. She was lucky that he only shot her in the arm, and she’s expected to recover.
Any of the Armed Intelligentsia could have told her that all firearms must be either locked up or on your person if you’ve got children in the house. Mrs. Winding will have time to consider her bad decision and good luck while she admires her gleaming IGOTD award.

My father once collected a debt from a friend who had no cash – he accepted instead a very high quality metal replica of a nickel-plated semi-auto pistol. When he brought it home he placed it on the table in the hall next to the telephone and three weeks later, in a house with four kids from 4 – 9 years old, that pistol was in exactly the same spot.
Shortly afterwards he gave it to me (the only boy) to play with, out in the street, in Chicago. Yeah, it was a long time ago.
I’ve heard the Remington 1911 line is supposedly pretty good, I really like the enhanced and carry models, any thoughts?
Not everyone agrees with your nanny state approach. It is that thinking which is a hairs breath from the PSH leftist BS. I am a firm believer in the “mind your f ‘ing business when it comes to their household.” I won’t tell you when to lock your doors, windows car, garage or how to treat your kids, wife or dog. You don’t tell me what the hell to do with my guns. End of discussion.
There is a significant differentiation between telling you what you must do and giving you really good advice.
On the other hand, maybe Darwin had a point.
Seriously! If I want to let my children drink gasoline and play cowboys & indians with real guns, that’s my right as an American…don’t tell me how to raise my kids!
Firearms need to be on you or in the safe, regardless of whether or not you have children in the house. You never know who is going to make their way inside, invited or not.
“(Wells Fargo says) only the government, not a private employer, can be sued over alleged constitutional violations.”
Are these people kidding? Case law doesn’t support this and if the court rules in WF’s favor then it will be perfectly fine for businesses to discriminate against people because of their race, creed, color religion sex etc because its not the federal gov’t doing it.
nothing on Earth can ferret out trouble like an unsupervised xx boy except 18yr old boy and where trouble is a young female creature.
As the population ages, be aware that many of the same dangers apply to the elderly, as do to the very young. Whether mental diminishment or physical impairment, responsible firearms ownership requires guarding against unsafe handling by some of the elderly, as well.
only question I have is, was the “thief” in the vicinity of Leland Yee’s SF abode, and if yes, does the thief have a shitload of Triad tats? 🙂
Leland. . . . . they are coming for ya. . . . rat now.
Maybe it was a Glock “safe action” pistol? And why oh why is anyone giving the cop a pass?
Impossible. CA only allows safe handguns and they are extensively drop tested.
If only it had been a smart gun there would have been no way for the cop to have an ND with it.
car door slightly open, car accelerates and sharply turns to right side at the same time, momentum will cause the door to swing open quickly (clipping the cop) and then swing shut… and now, why not wait until Monday before Monday-morning quarterbacking? I’ve done this with my car, sans cop and gun though…
My 2 youngest sons are the best behaved , most respectful and I think the best 18 & 21year olds in the world. Never hit ’em. My brother also has 10kids & doesn’t beat them. It’s possible to train your children without treating them like a dog. BTW I’m NOT against spanking. The whole point about remembering being 2 had nothing to do with training your kid. My wife has vivid memories about her 1st birthday, while I have vivid memories about my mother taking me into the women’s locker room at the YMCA. LOTS of boobs & dark triangles LOL. I think I was 3. In conclusion keep your f##king guns out reach of your 2 year old.
Thank you and I agree and as we do not spank either but I guess that makes me a too permissive parent yet my daughter is very polite and well behaved.
A shock collar would work and hell you would not even have to get up off of the lazboy! Just sayin…
In a city as liberal as San Fransisco, I would find it far more likely that the officer either fired at the car when it accelerated towards him, or had his finger on the trigger and pointed at the vehicle when it sped away and jolted him enough to fire an unintentional shot, and the PD came up with a very implausible scenario to forestall city-wide complaints, protests, and shrieking news media reporters about “trigger-happy” officers shooting at a fleeing subject that is not known to be armed. As it is, I’m just going to take this report as a “trial run” explanation until something that makes better sense comes along. Stories tend to change as more information comes up–whether for better or worse depends on the honesty of those telling the tale.

Wow….not the po po isn’t even TRYING to come up with believable lies.
They just throw out whatever drek they like and expect it to fly.
No way this is credible. You expect me to believe he struck an officer and only one shot was fired?
You say “negligent”, I say if it wasn’t meant to happen it’s “accidental”. Too much lawyer-speak in the word
“negligence” these days.
Ichy-ichy-ptang!
I think we can all look back at different circumstances in our lives and find instances where unintended consequences were a result of trying to do the right thing. In todays world where right is forced to be accepted as wrong, and wrongs are forced to be accepted as right.. we have to use our own sane judgment..
The domestic battery was dropped. But being admitted voluntarily for a week to a psychiatric ward ten years ago could be construed as anything without the facts…Look.. 40 yrs ago I had an aunt that was found unconscious on her kitchen floor by a neighbor. The stove pilot light went out and she was passed out from the fumes…that was the short version..they stuck her in the nut house for observation because they thought she was suicidal . the details were she was old..and so was the stove..she wasnt suicidal, Just slow moving around..Fact is, the guy didnt say why he was in the psych ward..Just that he was there.. that doesnt mean squat… its like saying if you are sitting in jail you must have done something wrong and we all know that Jail is just a blanket answer warehouse.. it doesnt mean anything unless you are convicted…
The guy should elaborate on why he admitted himself… maybe he was dupped into going by some slick talking shrink.. maybe he had a moment of weakness.. and didnt understand the consequences..
Ah, China…
Proof that America does like Oppressive Communist Systems, given that we can exploit the lower class people for cheap, nearly slave like, labor in order to lower the cost of manufacturing our products.
While simultaneously shipping current American jobs overseas to decrease the cost of production, yet not decreasing the overall cost of products to the American consumer. But, increases the profit margins of uber wealth corporations and the bonuses of their, also uber wealthy, directors and officers. Whom pay literally nothing into our America tax system due to tax loopholes for large companies and the wealth class.
Yay, China!
Hey Anon, I’m on my mobile so I can’t respond directly to your comment; I’d say the thuggery of the ATF would top that list but then the rest of those three letter dens of iniquity would be close behind in their “Eye of Sauron” malevolence and the danger to our freedoms far out way any chance of injury or death from a terrorist attack.
Special forces and SWAT teams don’t get arrested for shooting the wrong person. Half the time they get promoted for it.
Getting back to the bigger issue: Why in the blue hell would you ever want to carry a gun that weighs more, holds less, costs more, and is slower/more complicated to fire?
Unless their servers is heavily encrypted (and one can safely bet they aren’t) the NSA likely already has the data. What are they doing with it? Also likely nothing at the moment. But it’s being woven into the algos they use to attempt to divine the past – and the future.
Beyond the current logging of every single byte that flows through teh interwebz, they routinely penetrate ‘servers of interest’. Anyone who still thinks that NSA hacking stops at Congress critters, reporters, and big corporations, is fooling themselves. We’re now all ‘suspected terrorists’ subject to surveillance. Why? Because they can.
Nick, this unfortunately is a lose-lose situation for you. Sell your baby and you’ll regret it; don’t get your pilot license and you’ll regret it.
Me, personally, I love my guns and I love flying. (I’m fortunate enough to be a professional, and ex-military who’s only ever paid for taking the written tests and never for a single flight hour. Commerical Rotary Wing, Instrument, CFI, CFII, and ATP-Helicopter writtens were all on my dime.) But, if I had to ever choose, I’d have to give up all the guns except for the triumvirate for home and personal defense. A large caliber/capacity pistol, an AR, and a defense shotgun.
Actually, this is mostly old news. NSSF filed its lawsuit months ago, about the same time Pena v, CID was amended to include the microstamp law. The only thing new is the motion for preliminary injunction. This suit is much cleaner and simpler than Pena, as it attacks only the microstamping law and the tech behind it Pena, on the other hand, attacks the entire safe handguns law, and that is a much harder case because the roster, when originally enacted was to assure drop safe firearms. If it had stopped there, I doubt that it would have ever been overturned–and since there is still that facet of the roster active, it may undermine attacks on the less obviously safety related requirements for roster listing.
lol… karma?
I can always hope that after receiving the order to violently end a standoff with an otherwise law-abiding AW owner, LEO’s promptly pepper spray the ass-hat that gave the order & claim self-defense.
Why isn’t she in jail for child endangerment why is she not put away for child neglect why would u go to bed at 2am knowing ur toddler is awake and u are worried about an intruder I also read in one of the articles that she lived in filth with dog poop everywhere and kids dirty its all a shame
