Our friend John Boch, president of Guns Save Life in Champaign, Illinois, recently relayed the difficulty one of his members had trying to hand over some junk at a gun buyback held earlier this month by the Stone Creek Church in neighboring Urbana. The church ultimately claimed it managed to collect 107 guns during the event. But John, being the ‘trust but verify’ type that he is, filed a Freedom of Information Act request to find out exactly what was collected and he’s emailed us his findings . . .

Church claims 107 guns collected. FOIA request, with NOTHING redacted, shows 33 guns turned in. Only 33 guns turned in. Sum value of all:  Scrap metal at first glance.

Looks like the good church is either lying or the agencies split up the take. Next week I’ll FOIA bomb the other three agencies that might have been present (Champaign, U of I, and County).

Also got a private email from the sheriff, who I’m acquainted with, apologizing for the unpublished conditions imposed upon those wishing to participate.  Apparently when the Urbana Police Chief (it was their baby, so to speak) found out about the “Are you friends with John Boch?” and similar questions, he told the church people to knock it off.

    • But, but, but… the pastor claimed repeatedly he was a member of the NRA!

      Maybe he’s like millions of gun owners in America who at one time was a member but still consider themselves NRA members even though they haven’t sent in their annual dues in the last twenty-five years.

      Then again, maybe he’s a misguided NRA member in good standing, who believes, however foolishly, that criminals will surrender their guns.

      In any event, surely that $5,000 the church spent could have better been spent in other areas to show that church’s love for their fellow man in the community.

      I see this gun turn in and the negative publicity it’s created for the church as a big, completely unnecessary distraction from the church’s mission to spread God’s love among the community.

    • Unfortunately, it appears so. Sadly they do exist, and even tell lies to their own. THOSE are not my kind of church. IF they lie, they go against the very thing they claim they believe in.
