Gut-Shot Home Invader Keeps Attacking, Then Quits After Being Shot In The Hand

Guns aren’t death rays, even with solid center-mass hits. A Houston homeowner is alive and safe after defending his home against a crazed robber Saturday night, because he kept shooting until the threat was neutralized . . .

From KHOU-Houston:

According to the Houston Police Department, the suspect smashed in the front window of the home, located in the 3300 block of Dennis near Sampson, with a piece of concrete. The incident happened just before 11 p.m.

Investigators said the homeowner heard the noise and grabbed his gun. He then saw the suspect at his front door.

The homeowner shot one time through the window, hitting the suspect in the stomach, police said. The suspect tried to get up and come after the homeowner, who then shot him a second time. The suspect was hit in the hand with the second shot.

The Energizer Bunny Burglar shrugged off a bullet in the gut, but threw in the towel when he got shot in the hand? I’ll leave it to the Armed Intelligentsia to speculate as to which form of pharmaceutical mind-alteration he was enjoying at the time.

This story illustrates several important things. First off, keep firing until the threat is neutralized. Shoot until they go down and stay down. Sometimes you won’t land a solid hit, and sometimes an attacker will keep attacking even after getting their heart shot out. As long as they’re taking coordinated offensive action against you, you need to keep shooting. This homeowner figured it out, and he survived the night unharmed.

The second lesson here is a legal one. In many parts of the country, shooting an attacker through a window would land you in the hoosegow on felony assault charges, but Texas law strongly favors homeowners in cases like this.

Stay safe.

  1. Someone please define “cooperating with police.” I see that all the time. Does that mean ignoring the STFU rule and submitting to police questioning?

  2. I’d buy an XDs in .45 in a NY second if he State of California would allow it. I have an XD9 that is simply too thick for me to carry, but that I trust to operate reliably, and I never could find a holster that allowed me to carry a 1911 with a full size grip without printing.

  3. This is how I look at it … There are way too many cops who kill people (or dogs) unnecessarily … far too often innocent people. If this prevents them from doing that, it’s a GOOD thing.

There are scenarios in which someone can really “look like” a bad guy but may not be. As a general rule, it’s not a great idea for cops to be executing people as opposed to bringing them to trial. There are at least three scenarios I can think of where using non-lethal force should be absolutely required:

    (1) the person who is normally good and peaceful if they’re taking their medications, but for whatever reason (be it “doesn’t want to” or “can’t afford it”) they aren’t up to date, and are a bit out of control;
    (2) the person with a diabetic emergency whose blood sugar is too low, and they’ve turned into a raging monster;
    (3) the person who is depressed and suicidal and is angry at the world.

As Jeff mentioned above, I don’t know if having the lethal and non-lethal options on the same weapon is good or bad. I think that really good training would be an absolute requirement so they don’t shoot someone they’re trying to subdue non-lethally. Perhaps they’d have to use it with their trigger finger wrapped around the pistol grip of the gun so that they don’t accidentally fire …? Dave’s suggestion of added to a non-lethal bean bag gun might be a better option.

On the other hand, as far as using this product for home self defense …. no. No way. If someone has broken into my house, I must assume that they mean to injure or kill me. If I need to use force on them, it will be lethal force.

In short, I like the concept, even if not necessarily the implementation, as far as for police using non-lethal force. I don’t like it at all for civilian use.

  4. No, and she isn’t living in South Africa nor intending to return there soon, is she?

She acts well, looks fine, but she has only the fool reasons for worrying about guns, very personal ones. My mother never shot my father, and my father never tried to shoot me, nor any of my siblings. We have always treated firearms with respect, but treat humans with even more respect. Try to find that respect in South Africa. There are little patches of it.

  5. For $1.4 million, I can’t think of any combination of “at least 65” guns that are not replaceable with gold plated versions.
    Just saying…

  6. Looks like pure junk. Maybe this would work for indoor range loads or gallery loads so they can mass produce practice ammo. I don’t think it will ever compare to real brass or even steel cases, for serious match loads or hunting loads, and wouldn’t even want to load it ever into a defensive weapon.

  8. In other words Chicago’s mayor needs time to purchase the property in the only locations where the city will allow gun shops … as well as time to solicit bribes from companies for permission to build gun shops on his newly acquired properties.

    What a racquet.

  9. What is sad, is that even after he was fired, he has had time to reflect and he still doesn’t get it. Listen up, Metcalf. You gave aid and comfort to the enemy by penning your misguided column.

Here is what a man of your stature should understand by now!

No amount of compromise is enough for liberal gun hating, democrat voters. The end game is confiscation and civilian disarmament. Period. So, a little regulation here and a little regulation there, isn’t enough.

So, a NO COMPROMISE stance by the gun rights movement, in your opinion means we are radicals?
If refusing one more encroachment on our 2nd amendment rights makes me a radical, then I will wear that badge with honor sir!

You can be a democrat gun owner. But if you pull the lever and vote for Obama or any other democrat, you are part of the problem. I don’t see how you can reconcile, the two. It is the democrat party coming after our gun rights!

That said, as a firearms trainer, I don’t care if your democrat, republican or independent. I will teach all that wish to learn. Once my students are trained, they will make the journey politically that makes sense to them. As a trainer, I don’t even mention politics in my classes. I do encourage them to join the NRA or some other grass roots organization but that is it.

The real problem Metcalf, is that you don’t understand what you did. You threw the movement you were in for decades under the bus. You gave aid and comfort to the enemy! Yes, our fellow american citizens are our blood enemies. People like Bloomberg and Feinstein have to be our enemies. They are elitist, who have NO problem, taking away your right to self defense, because we as tax payers pay for their armed protection.
The 2nd amendment, isn’t up for debate. That debate ended in 1791 with the ratification of the Bill of Rights. If we accept more gun control, we allow them to take the next step, which leads to the end goal. Confiscation and civilian disarmament.

    Enjoy your retirement!

Quite simple, really…Democrats who own guns value other things over gun rights..and they may well conclude that their ability to own Fudd guns will not be restricted.

      For now, anyway…

  10. The simple fix for my PF-9 was to stack an extra extractor spring on top of the existing one. It was a $1 part from Kel-Tec with free shipping. Fixed my FTEs perfectly…zero FTEs since and that’s several hundred rounds later. Prior to that it would FTE on nearly every mag (factory new ammo). The fix took all of about 2 minutes: remove the screw holding the leaf spring, stack another one on top, replace the screw. Done. Here’s the part, SKU: PF9-182. http://www.keltecweapons.com/pf-9/pf-9-parts/pf9-182-extractor-spring/

  11. I do agree.

Should we also not give these things minimal coverage? Say it happened and move on! All this trotting it out every few months serves the same purpose as glorifying the shooter. Even if the shooter is forgotten their act won’t be, and so the motivator is still there, at least in part.

  13. I have never seen a company that has such a disparity between the quality of its handguns vs. its longuns. Kel-tec rifles and their 1 shotgun have gotten fairly favorable reviews. I think gas operated subcompact pistols are hard to get right. I have not heard many bad things about their PLR-16 pistol which is essentially the same frame as the SU-16.

  14. I previously owned the Mossberg 930 SPX and liked it.It was light and FAST! It was definateley more reliable and weather resistant than my Benelli M1S90. I managed to have one pushrod in the gas system shear off and jam inside the action, but Mossberg replaced it free. My friends 930 also had a crack in the gas system. Often the 930 had shell retention issues in the mag tube. A number of the 930s were shipped with canted front sights. I prefer the FNH gun, but the 930 is good if you have a well made one.
