Daily Digest: What I Learned In School Edition

PMAG 25 LR-SR courtesy magpul.com

MAGPUL is now shipping their new PMAG 25 LR/SR for rifles chambered in .308/7.62. The new mags have all the standard features of the Gen3 PMAGS you’re used to, including the slim floorplate and the dot matrix area for marking. The mags feature a 25 round capacity and a window, and are designed for ammunition that falls within SAAMI specs for overall length. For shooters that prefer to shoot ammo that exceeds the SAAMI specs, such as match ammo, a design to accommodate the longer rounds and still drop free from “all but the smallest of mag wells” is coming in the fall of this year . . .

Tarpon Springs, Florida will soon be home to a sprawling, multifaceted gun range facility, if developers have their way. Tarpon Springs city commissioners voted unanimously to approve the 60,000-square-foot Reload Gun Range on Tuesday. The large facility will feature 45 firing lanes, a cafe, gunsmith service, classroom space, a firearms store and training areas for law enforcement, and could be open by this time next year. There were loud voices on both sides prior to the vote, with opponents expressing fears that the range would bring noise, pollution, and crime to the city. Commissioners instead decided that the range would boost tourism, create jobs, generate tax revenue and remove a long-standing eyesore, as the chosen location is currently occupied by a long-abandoned Days Inn and an IHOP. The one concession the commissioners required from the developer was that they had to abandon plans to display a tank in front of the completed facility. Good trade.

An altercation on an RTA bus in Dayton, Ohio Monday morning resulted in a gun being pulled, then dropped, and a man being arrested. Two men started arguing in the back of a city bus, and one pulled a gun. Somehow he dropped it, and the other man picked it up, and hit the first man with it, injuring him. No shots were fired. The driver stopped the bus and opened the back door, and both men got off. The wounded man was found by police at a nearby library, and was taken into custody. According to police, he faces at least weapons charges. They’re still looking for the other man, and what they’d charge him with is unclear. Personally, I think he deserves nothing more than a handshake. Someone pulled a gun on him and all he did was hit the guy with his own gun. That’s a lot of self-restraint.

Two former students of an expensive Philadelphia prep school were charged on Monday with running a five-school drug ring, using the contacts obtained while members of the lacrosse team at the school. The drug ring, headquartered out of the $35,000-a-year all-boys Haverford School in Philadelphia’s affluent Main Line suburb, was selling cocaine, ecstasy, marijuana, and hash oil to students. Police recovered over eight pounds of marijuna, about $11,000 in cash, a loaded assault weapon [gasp] and two other firearms while executing a search warrant. One of the two students obtained the marijuana from a contact in California who said that the pot would “sell very well on the Main Line because everyone between 15 and 55 loves good weed.”

This looks like they had some fun. Don’t think too hard about it, just enjoy the show.

The best one is clearly the Halo Energy Sword, although who doesn’t love a good sticky mine.

When will Magpul make a 7.62×51 mag for us guys with Armalite AR-10’s?

    1. avatar Guy says:

Still waiting on some good M1A mags…

    2. avatar doesky2 says:

I’m officially starting the unfounded rumor that AK74 is next on tap.

    3. avatar Rusty Shackleford says:

      Where are the HK91 Mags?

      1. Hk 91 mags are cheap and easily available as it is- try finding an HK 93 mag! With a bunch of c-93’s out there, it might profit magpul to make 20,000 or so mags for them- I’d buy several, myself.

  2. avatar Lfshtr says:

    And sicom, hmmm.

  3. avatar Tom in Oregon says:

Not compatible with the rock river LAR8.
    Sniff, sniff.

  4. avatar Jeremy says:

Dayton PD its probably looking for him just to harass him for picking the guys gun up. Just seems like something they’d do, most of the Dayton cops are walking jokes anyway.

I laughed out loud watching the chalk warfare when the almost-high-five happened.

  7. avatar Sixpack70 says:

How do gun ranges bring more crime to an area? I would really like to see where they get this information. Oh, I forgot. Guns=Crime…

  8. avatar William Burke says:

Sick and tired of measly 30-roung mags? Try our new, improved 25-round mags!

    1. avatar LC Judas says:

To my knowledge they’re pushing the bar up from 20 rounds of .308 not down from 30. Question is…will these stay in stock? Cuz the 20 round ones have doubled in price where you can even get them.

      1. avatar mumson says:

I’ve been waiting for these 25 rounders for over a year. During that time, I have come across a potential theoretical problem with them – they might be too long to effectively use in the prone position. Does anyone else think that might be a concern, or am I over/under-thinking it?

  9. avatar Steve Case says:

    >> Someone pulled a gun on him and all he did was hit the guy with his own gun. That’s a lot of self-restraint.

    He’s a better man than I. Props.

  10. avatar Azman says:

Definitely no magpul ak74 mags. Not with the atf bs about surplus ammo.

  11. avatar mumson says:

You refer to the drug dealing preppies as having an assault rifle, but the linked article doesn’t say that – it says they had an assault weapon (sic).

I always feel disappointed when our side gets them confused, but it does show how sinister the creation of the term “assault weapon” was, when people who know the difference get them mixed up.

    1. avatar Ing says:

I don’t think they had a gun at all. Technically that’s impossible; schools are gun-free zones.

      1. avatar Vhyrus says:

They’re drug free zones as well. Must be a hoax.

    2. avatar Matt in FL says:

Less “get them confused” and more “typing in a hurry.” Usually I have two screens, so I can read on one and type on the other, but in this case I was flipping between tabs on a single screen, and I fell victim to a faulty memory along the way.

      Still, text amended.

  12. avatar 0351 says:

Of course, now that the 25 rounders are illegal, I am SOL in my state now… Then again, I wonder if they poke in the dirt with the increased length over the 20 rounders. I would personally like to see a box mag design for 30/40 rounds by magpul. Though of course I’d have to move first or hope for the useless laws to change.

  13. avatar MarkinVA says:

Need help: Can anyone identify these cartridges (and one shell)? I am told they may be 7.92×57 Mauser but the one on top looks like a 7.62×39 but the base looks to big (but this could be dirt): http://tinypic.com/r/2hz0588/8

    1. avatar Ardent says:

The top one appears to be rimmed and thus not a 7.62×39 though it does resemble it otherwise. Beyond that it’s very difficult to say from the supplied image. If you could clean them up, show head stamps and a few of them standing vertically with a known round for size reference identification would be easier.

  14. The chalk video was amazing.
