Bullet found in garden, Worksop, UK courtesy worksopguardian.co.uk

In an incident that I can find no other word to describe besides “pathetic,” a single round of ammunition led to the complete stoppage of repair work at a home in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, a small town in central England. Workmen were replacing a fence panel, but “had to abandon their work after discovering a bullet in the garden.” The workers knocked on the door and told the homeowner, a pregnant mother of three, that they were calling the police because they’d found the live ammunition. “I couldn’t believe it,” she said. . .

“I’ve got to keep the kids out of the garden until it is removed. I’m worried what else could be there.” Not so much for the mom-to-be, but for the workmen, I have no words. That not a one of them would take it upon themselves to move a single cartridge so they could get on with the job absolutely dumbfounds me. Once upon a time the men of England were some of the most adventurous and daring on the globe. Not so much anymore, it seems.

Your Lockdown of the Day™ comes from Lockport [HA!], New York. An empty ankle holster was found inside Starpoint High School just after 7 a.m. on Wednesday, leading to a two hour lockdown (before students were even there) and a search of the entire building. It turns out that an off-duty police officer dropped the empty holster in the parking lot after a school event Tuesday night. Another parent, thinking it was sports equipment, left it on a ledge just inside the door so the owner could reclaim it. “The decision was made to keep the students out of the school, on the buses, until the entire building was searched and was determined to be safe,” Starpoint Superintendent Dr. C. Douglas Whelan said. Parents were notified by phone and email that school would be delayed, but no explanation was given as to why. The lockdown was lifted and students were let into school just after 9am.

Joe Nocera at the NY Times started writing The Gun Report just over a year ago. A few days back, he published a brief one-year analysis. I’ll let you read the whole thing if you want (it’s only about 8 paragraphs), but here’s his conclusion: “The idea that guns, on balance, save lives — which is one of the most common sentiments expressed in the pro-gun comments posted to The Gun Report — is ludicrous. On the contrary: The clearest message The Gun Report sends is the most obvious. Guns make killing way too easy.”

Long Mountain Outfitters is cramped. The sales staff is on top of you. It’s also visibly armed. The customers are focused on the stock. There is very little eye contact. The store is functional, almost sterile. And in that way it’s just like every other gun shop in the U.S. But once you step behind the counter it’s clear this is no ordinary retail store. What truly separates LMO from the average gun shop is Dan Shea’s reference collection. He’s been building it for 35 years. Shea’s library contains over 4,000 weapons. It is one of the most diverse collections in the world, and you would never expect to find it here in a drab complex of low-slung commercial buildings just outside of Las Vegas. Read the rest over at www.polygon.com. [h/t Pascal]

ShootingTheBull410 previously gave G2 Industries’ R.I.P. ammo the thorough going-over that he’s known for in a two-part series. (Part 2) Now Richard Ryan gives it his world-class high-speed slow-mo treatment.

I think the best part was watching the drywall dust come blasting back out of the block as the expansion cavity collapsed. I haven’t checked out his extra footage from the R.I.P. tests, so if you do, let us know what’s worth seeing.

  1. I like the honest reviews.
The opinions of the staff and readers.
The huge amount and variety of information that flows.
Things like, “what’s your favorite gun song”.

The amount of information that gets shared here is pretty neat.

Keep up the great work, guys and gals.

    • They’re probably just terrified at the thought of being charged with touching ammunition which is probably a punishable offense in Britain by now. Muggers are are doing pretty well it seems since you get a harsher punishment for trying to defend yourself than robbing people.

I’ll bet they were when they were telling their HSLD Operator stories in the Pub that afternoon.

  2. So a few quick questions on how you guys read this:

    1. Center cubbies and door cubbies are fair game?
    2. Those that have been through basic don’t need the class and can just apply for the permit?

  7. Damn, I remember when kids used get caught calling in bomb threats. Now they could avoid the trip to juvie hall if they drop an empty holster in a random place on campus. And thus the chicken littles invent a new way to skip a test day.

  8. RIP – Yet another marketing gimmick round. As soon as I saw that bullet face the first thing that popped into my head was feeding problems. Sure enough, the author had one fail to feed in his Glock. I’ll stick with HST, Gold Dots, Golden Sabers, and Ranger T’s, save money, and feel confident that my self defense ammo will feed properly, and expand – penetrate consistently and sufficiently.

  9. As I kind of said in my review – try and set aside the whole “Navy Seal” thing. This book is a rock solid review of fundamentals. It really encapsulates the skills that we all need to have and in that respect, its brevity works to its advantage. It really did contain much of what I have learned in the training I have taken over the years and it serves as an excellent reminder/refresher for the experienced and a great starting point for the new shooter. At $37 its a bit expensive, but it covers most of what you’d get in a typical one day shooting class at a good school. Compare its cost to the $200 or so you would pay for said one day school and its a pretty good deal.

  14. My two cents. I am a military medic, have been for 5.5 years, leave it at that.

Celox-light blows away in wind, you end up packing the wound with gauze after you dump celox in. Still 2 packages for 1 wound in your bag. you have two open those two very well seal packages with slippery blood on your hand and stress, wastes time and space.

Hemcon- has to be placed directly on source of bleed, maybe usefull in OR but the field, dislike, and you need to pack wound with gauze anyway, 2 packages 1 wound.

Quickclot- another one where you need to mop blood out and pack wound with gauze anyway. you can also spill the granules then you are SOL, this kind of stuff happens under stress.

Combat gauze/celox gauze- gauze impregnated with hemostatic agents. This stuff works. Just start packing. You can pack, then ball up the left over so your final dressing puts plenty of pressure on the wound.

Tampons- Stupid, wouldn’t pack one, but i would use one. IE wreck car and a menstrual women says “how can i help?” I guess people assume well gun shots are round and so are tampons! well they aren’t gunshot wounds are big nasty cavities with pulped up muscle tissue around them so even if you plug the tiny entrance wound there is a lot of bleeding out to be done inside.

Kerlex- this is just roll gauze, highly underrated. It works really well, pack the wound deep and hard, the bleed will stop. If it doesn’t you’re doing it wrong.

Xstat- I have not used it so this is just my thoughts and questions. Does the applicator come fully assembled? (celox does not) In the picture the plunger is depressed but contents still inside? so do you pull to activate or is this bad boy longer than they are showing it? Probably have to pull the plunger to extend then depress to despense, which would be a neat way of keeping it assembled and keeping size down.
Also look how fat it is, some wounds are skinny than what? just put it on top press and pray? Where as gauze i can use my fist, my finger, or even a stick to pack the gauze in. OK lets say they make it in different sizes, still more shit you have to carry. I shoot xstat in, need more pressure before i trow my ace wrap/h-bandage on there, well i probably can’t leave a pile of these pellets on top and wrap around that, so i will need to open up a roll of gauze than put my final dressing on. More packages, more crap for one wound.

Final thoughts, if you don’t want to get your hand deep inside someones wound to pack it, and this is why you resort to tampons and fancy applicators, let someone else pack the wound.

  15. It’s obvious that “lapel cameras” are an absolute WASTE of taxpayer dollars. They show virtually NOTHING of what is actually happening. If that’s the best you can do just go with a cheap mic and
    record the sound.

As for the “badass cop” shooting through his windshield…FIRE HIS IGNORANT STUPID TESTOSTERONE FUELED ASS NOW. That action had virtually ZERO chance of actually
hitting the subject but it DID launch a magazine full of 5.56 rounds out into the public with the
words “to whom it may concern” on them. It’s a flipping miracle Mr. BadAss idiot didn’t kill
    a citizen with that insanity,.

  16. A complete lack of morals and being a Godless animal make killing way to easy. It boggles the mind that that the collective “they” argue over efficiency of method vs making any attempt to correct the root cause. Reducing the efficiency of a killer is great unless its you, your spouse, or your children, that they still manages to kill. Its like they are saying that some number of murders per unit time should be accepted and ignored.

  17. Don’t the police open carry? Either she’s lying about handguns being intrinsically intimidating and dangerous, or she’s suggesting that it’s proper for children to be intimidated and endangered by the police.

Most likely it’s just that she doesn’t believe that regular, everyday law-abiding citizens can responsibly carry firearms. Typical liberal duplicity of feigning adoration to conceal their contempt for the stupid unwashed masses.

Froggy has been a bit inactive for a year but don’t let that stop you from checking out his blog. Lots of things to love there and he is all about sharing with his American cousins(he is the non-surrendering type Frenchman).

And as for the English lockdown, pretty sure the property owner will get into more trouble for that improperly disposed alkaline battery. Or they might make it co-equal! Never can tell with leftards.

  20. How do you search an entire high school thoroughly enough to confirm the non existence of a handgun in 2 hours? Thinking of my the average-sized high school I attended I can’t see how you’d do it in less than 2 days.

Off the top of my head:
    -Open every locker
-leaf through every book in the library that’s bigger than a gun
-probe every container in maintenance and the kitchen
    -inspect every space’s drop ceiling
    -open every music case
-inspect every ball in the gym
-inspect every desk and filing cabinet drawer, every cabinet

(probably on some list now, feel free to add your own)

What school do the libs go to for those wonderfull smiles? the Larry Storch school of acting? So far in Wi. the grabbers have STFU, although every once & awhile you hear about Walkers “dangerous” policies. Oh well, the Brits heard the same shit so put a sock in it frances & mothers for mayors money, Randy

  24. Police openly carry something just as “dangerous” all the time. Are police supposed to be “intimidating” to the citizens of Texas? If they’re not, then they should be disarmed!

Really though, I like what the whole Wendy Davis situation says about Texas. In Texas, politicians have to promote how pro-gun they are to get elected. Wouldn’t it be great if it was like that everywhere?

Sigh. The entire point of firearms is that it makes killing easier…killing a deer for dinner, kiling a hog or chipmunk to protect your fields, killing a murderous rapist to protect your family. Killing drug cartel members and the corrupt police and feds who help them, to protect the security of a free state. If it weren’t for guns, people this short-sighted statist would say things like “long pointy knives make killing too easy”.

  28. I have found that one of the greatest challenges when you start taking defensive gun training is to break a lot of bad habits developed via the “stand on line and take a shot every few seconds” approach, aka, “do it yourself training.”

Learning to reload quickly and effectively in your “workspace” is key, as well as making sure you get off double-taps effectively, rather than taking one shot, watching to see where it hits, then moving on to your next shot.

I know there are some folks on this forum who are absolutely convinced they need no professional training and can just “learn themselves how to shoot” by spending time at their gun club, but … take even one truly professional training class and you will come away astounded by how much you have learned and how much you didn’t know before you began.
