Earlier this week, Charlotte North Carolina Deputy Chief Kerr Putney reassured Queen City residents that they’re safe—despite all the increased business the city morgue has been doing lately. Chill. Everyone who was shot pretty much deserved it by dint of their penchant for “risky lifestyles” [semi-paraphrasing]. And then  . . . “Charlotte’s recent spate of violence took a new twist Thursday night when gunfire broke out at an anti-violence vigil in the city’s Villa Heights neighborhood . . . Mothers of Murdered Offspring sponsored the vigil, calling attention to last Thursday’s death of Javon Booker, who police say was fatally shot when he allegedly tried to rob a convenience store on Tom Hunter Road in north Charlotte.” According to charlotteobserver.com, four people were shot. This time. None were seriously injured. This time. Deputy Chief Putney was unavailable for comment. [h/t Timothy K.]

    This is what happens if you let guns out of the safe! They get together, get drunk in the parking lot of the Circle K, and start shooting their muzzles off at each other, and inevitably innocent people are caught in the cross-fire!

  2. Whaaa?? Holding a vigil against violence for a gangbanger who was offed while robbing the local liquor store? That in itself is bizarre, separate and apart from shooting at (theoretically unarmed) vigil attendees. (Which I suppose means they were not “vigilantes.”) Am I to assume that some of the attendees were members of Javon’s gangsta associates, whose rivals took advantage of the situation?

    • True story: a pizza delivery guy was shot in my neighborhood the week I moved there to take classes at UNC Charlotte. Kinda sucks when you can’t get a pizza delivered to your neighborhood, by anybody at any price.

      I resolved the specific issue of the neighborhood by moving to a better locale 6 months later. I resolved the general issue by leaving Charlotte, and indeed, North Carolina entirely, at my earliest opportunity after completing my time at UNCC.

  4. Reports of the dead rising and eating he living are greatly exaggerated in our Lovely City. It’s only a few fraternity pranks during hazing season….

      • I’m pretty sure it proves they have no crime in charlotte…they shoot robbers and they shoot people who support them.

  7. If you acknowledge the evil that the deceased was involved in, it SHOULD become impossible to lay the blame for his demise at our feet. Instead, it is somehow another example of JUST HOW EVIL our gun culture really is… so much so that even poor citizens from low wage communities can’t resist joining us in this imagined orgy of death.

  8. The Charlotte Observer’s comment section has this statement from Mothers of Murdered Offspring:

    “Chris, Mark & Todd. MOMO supports families of homicide victims – does a family hurt any less because their loved one was doing something wrong when they died. We understand how difficult it maybe to understand what someone else is going though. We don’t condone violence or misbehavior of ANY KIND EVER but we do support families….families of a dead son, daughter, sister, brother, mother, father etc. We don’t do many justifiable homicides but when a mother or father calls us grieving, we don’t turn our backs on their grief. Nor do we miss an opportunity to talk to other young people to say – All of this MUST STOP – look at the aftermath and what this is doing to our communities. No one last night glorified this young man’s behavior or the choices he made in fact the very opposite. The real message of last night’s vigil was a lesson to other young people doing things they shouldn’t….violence is NOT THE WAY, consequences are REAL, and death is FOREVER.”

    They just don’t get it. They’re mothers of MURDERED offspring — and justifiable homicide is NOT murder. My heart goes out to anyone who loses a loved one in sudden violence, but I’m also able to distinguish between murder victims and thugs who create victims.

    These “vigil aunties” are useless do-gooders at best (I would say they’re tragedy wh0res, but I’d rather give them the benefit of having good intentions).

  12. Just in case anyone is interested, check out ncgunblog.com and you’ll see quite a few stories of gun related crime in the Charlotte area. It seems to me that every third incident involves someone who was and should still be behind bars.

    Plus! There’s a picture of a pretty rifle for everyone to ogle.
