I watched an interesting show called “Underworld Inc” on overseas ghost guns, recently.
Families living in huts in the jungle were making fully functional 1911’s with old world gun making tech. Hand made guns out of blocks of steel.
The guns (no serial number and completely untraceable) sold for $150 per gun and one family could make about two guns per week. As the guns transferred hands (unused) the price went up to about $2000, once it reached the States, which isn’t an unheard of price for a new gun in America.
Once the gun was used in a crime, through ballistics it became traceable, and the price went down, accordingly, due to being “hot.”
Then, once the price dropped to a rock bottom number, less than its first $150 price tag, it was shipped back overseas to another third world country. Once again, becoming untraceable, due to third world policing not having the resources for mass ballistic identification.
The the ghost gun was made, sold, transported, resold, used (during crimes), resold, transported, reused (during crimes), and God only knows how many times this process took place and where. And one of those places the gun ventured was California, the banner state of the gunsense crowd.
Gun control is useless in regards to criminality. It only stops people who give a sh*t about the rule of law. It only hurts the people who plan on sticking around for the police after a shooting takes place. The other folks, who don’t plan on sticking around, not so much.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know what parts of a gun leave a “fingerprint” discernible to the latest in forensics tech? “Run a file through the barrel and across the firing pin” used to be considered sufficient anonymization, but that may have been at least partially due to revolvers not leaving casings behind. Are there now ways to identify a gun based on markings on the case walls and/or case head, assuming you’re shooting an auto and forget to pick up your spent shells?
With my very basic understanding of ballistic science, I’d say barrel, mag, firing pin, extractor are the only ways to do it. But that’s just a guess.
Just based on general reading, it seems the whole idea of “fingerprint” for a handgun is predicated on revolvers. With the wide-spread availability of semi-auto pistols, simply changing out the slide makes a whole new gun. without a total gun and gun owner database, it is impossible to actually trace a gun to an owner, gun parts to an owner. even “micro-stamping” the firing pin is useless.
