BREAKING: As Many as 50 Dead, 60 Injured in Istanbul Airport Attack

From the Daily Mail: “Three suicide bombers have killed up to 50 people and wounded 60 in a ‘major, co-ordinated’ attack at Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport, opening fire with AK-47s and sparking a shoot-out with security personnel before blowing themselves up. Eyewitnesses have told how a hero policeman wrestled a suicide bomber to the ground just seconds before he detonated his explosives at the entrance to the airport’s international arrivals terminal. It is believed the men were trying to pass through the security x-ray machines at the entrance to the airport, the third busiest in Europe, when they were stopped by security officers and carried out their lethal attack.”

It’s not known yet if this will be classified as a man-caused disaster or workplace violence. Watch this space.

    Those darn Christians strike again!

    1. avatar CarlosT says:

      No, it’s the Unitarians!

    2. avatar Matt in TX says:

      White conservative Christian males!

      1. avatar NYC2AZ says:

Obviously those white, Christian, conservative, male NRA members oppressed and marginalized these poor yutes.

    3. avatar Chris Morton says:

Damned Mormons and their suicide underwear!

      1. avatar Ing says:

Hey now, the Mormons are peaceful people. Those Jehovah’s Witnesses, though…

    4. avatar Mike says:

If anyone cares, check out how Mother Jones is covering this story. They make absolutely NO mention of the AK-47’s used in this attack. Why? Because they know damn well those things are already totally illegal there, and it puts a HUGE HOLE in their anti-gun rhetoric.

    5. avatar BLAMMO says:

      It was Istanbul, not Constantinople

      Now it’s Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Now it’s Turkish delight on a moonlit night
      every gal in Constantinople
      lives in Istanbul, not Constantinople
so if you’ve a date in Constantinople
      she’ll be waiting in Istanbul

Man, I have that song running through my head on loop now. I really like the original version from the ’50s.

Even Old New York was once New Amsterdam…

        1. avatar Jim S. says:

I’m ready for it to be New Amsterdam again.
          Minus NYC, of course…

        2. avatar BDub says:

Why they changed it, I can’t say.

        3. avatar Kirk says:

People just liked it better that waaaaaaaay!

    6. avatar TruthTellers says:

What? Clearly this was the doing of the SBA, Suicide Bombing Association. If it weren’t for them, we could have common sense bomb control laws passed.

  2. avatar DMD says:

Amish and Quakers, incited by that darned NRA, are at it again!!! DMD

  3. avatar Malcolm says:

If you watch the video, it’s another example of a cop turning a victory into a defeat.

The terrorist is shot. He’s on the ground but still moving. He’s reaching into his jacket. But instead of continuing to fire and ending the attack there, the cop (I assume it was the cop standing next to him), runs away giving the terrorist the time to set off his bomb.

    1. avatar Daily Beatings says:

He should have used the Israeli method of combating suicide bombers.

      1. avatar Mikial says:

Damn straight. Ever heard of the Vermilion Zone?

  4. avatar waffensammler98 says:

    *sigh* oh those Methodists…

    1. avatar C.S. says:

I’m telling my congregation on you next time I see them… sometime around Christmas…

  5. avatar Joe says:

Paris, Orlando, now this? How many acts of war do we need for us to realize we are at war!?

    1. avatar Gunsplain says:

Not acts of war. Acts of Congress. That is to say, only Congress can declare war.

When was the last time Congress declared war?

      1. avatar Just Another Day At TTAG says:

        This is my surprised face.

      2. avatar tdiinva (Now in Wisconsin) says:

Acts of War have nothing to do with a declaration of war. A declaration of war is the declaration of a legal state. An act of war is an activity. Pearl Harbor was an act of war. The Japanese never actually delivered a declaration. The message delivered to the SECSTATE was a notice of the breaking off of diplomatic relations.

    2. avatar Dyspeptic Gunsmith says:

Most people continue to give credence to the trope that Islam is “a religion of peace.” People continue to be willfully and deliberately ignorant of what Islam states as a requirement of the observant Muslim.

What is even more ignorant on the part of westerners are these calls for a “reformation” within Islam. Most of the people calling for such a “reformation” are Jewish or Catholic, and are ignorant of what the Reformation was based upon. One of the central issues in the Reformation as proposed by Luther was the idea of sola scriptura, which means that the Christian religion should be based on the text in the Bible. In some Protestant denominations, this is explained as “scripture supersedes tradition or interpretation…”

Well, if we apply the idea of sola scriptura to Islam, we quickly arrive at a point where ISIS is the gold standard of Islam, because they hew to a literal, textual reading of the Quran, Hadiths and Sira.

  6. avatar pwrserge says:

Meh… Wogs killing wogs… I just wish the “religion of peace” would keep their BS to their own third world hellholes. But no, Turkey should DEFINITELY be allowed into the EU. /sarc

  7. avatar GrampsGuns says:

    That’s it… I am tearing up my NRA card…. /sarcasm

  8. avatar Jose says:

AK-47?? I thought only ARs committed these acts of violence?

    1. avatar John L. says:

AKs do too… But only the parts that are black metal. The wood bits are the “good” bits.

  9. avatar Ralph says:

    Man caused disaster ?
Nice, have not heard that one used yet – today.
Any euphemism is better than telling what it actually is.

  10. avatar VF 1777 says:

    It was the Republicans fault!

  11. avatar gs650g says:

Clearly more background checks are required

  12. avatar jay lz says:

    Ban guns!

…suicide vests are fine though. Nothing to talk about there…

  13. avatar MiniMe says:

Clearly the infamous suicide-vest loophole was at play here.

    Ban airports!

  14. avatar Chris Morton says:

Nobody on the “no fly” list should be able to buy a suicide vest!

  15. avatar Matt in Oklahoma says:

GFers killing GFers. Why is this news?

    1. avatar Ragnar says:

They hit the international airport, so I think they were going for a more diverse victim type.

  16. avatar Mr. Woodcock says:

POTUS said attacks like these don’t happen in other countries. Nothing to see here. Move along.

    1. avatar jmmy james says:

My first thought exactly. This can’t possibly be happening because imperious leader said these things only happen in America.

  17. avatar IYearn4nARnCali says:

The sarcasm is biting today, but yes, I am sure “ass salt” weapons will be mentioned by our good old friend Barry, and then the continuing call for gun control will spread out over the airwaves and television screens of the world like digital vomit.

It’s too bad this happened, few deserve this treatment, and there are never any answers for this carnage, except you know, guns. /sarcasm warning —- WARNING SARCASM

  18. avatar Priest of the center mass says:

Someone’s getting a invite to the whitehouse….oops…..all blown up!

    Suicide vest = virgin facilitator

  19. avatar mike says:

So, ban the guns or the bombs?

  20. avatar Southern Cross says:

The Australian Greens have announced that tighter gun laws in Australia would have stopped this terrorist attack from happening, and it is all the fault of the NRA.

(sarcasm = off) but I imagine something like this would be released soon. There is a Federal election in Australia this weekend and all political parties are now on their 3-day media blackout immediately prior to the election. This has allowed Gun Control Australia to release a statement about the “rapid fire” Adler lever-action shotgun and the Shooters Party cannot respond until after the election.

  21. avatar Andrew Lias says:

Interstingly looking it up even though there is no registration you have to have regulatory approval and a mental/physical check up before you can own a gun in Turkey.

    1. avatar Southern Cross says:

From what I’ve heard, in Turkey you can own pistols and shotguns without too much trouble but rifles are another matter.

  22. avatar formerwaterwalker says:

How is this news? Turkey bombsISIS,Kurds and killed 1500000 Armenians 100 years ago. Lotta’ folks are mad at ’em…don’t forget Israel who they used to sorta’ be allies with. And do I still buy that Turkish shottie I’ve had my eye on?

  23. avatar Keystone says:

Clearly they need more Anti-Suicide Vest laws over there.

    1. avatar jay lz says:

      More Suicide-Vest Free Zones!

  24. avatar Anonymous says:

Suicide bombers isn’t the problem here – its the AK47s. They need more gun control. Nobody needs to be walking around with guns in public spaces.

    1. avatar YZAS says:

Yeah, that worked real well in France huh?

      1. avatar Mike says:

I think Anonymous was being sarcastic.

  25. avatar Jp says:

    If Barry had a son…..

  26. avatar Ralph says:

“the men were trying to pass through the security x-ray machines at the entrance to the airport, the third busiest in Europe”

Great reporting — Istanbul, Turkey is in Asia.

MSM nitwits can’t even get the continent right.

    1. avatar Dyspeptic Gunsmith says:

Well, they no longer have to study history or geography to get a humanities or liberal arts degree these days, Ralph. They can “pick and choose” a bunch of courses even more useless than basket weaving to make up 120 credit hours.

Then they go to J-school, where they get lobotomized as part of their graduate degree requirement…

    2. avatar formerwaterwalker says:

      It’s in BOTH Ralph:)

      1. avatar Tom in Georgia says:

Seems the airport is located on the western, thus European, side of the Bosporus, so the statement is factually correct. However, everyone knows Istanbul aka Constantinople is the traditional European/Asian crossroads, and frankly I doubt the MSM knows the context either way.

  27. avatar Mike says:

You’re not fooling me, TTAG- this is obviously a hoax, since terrorists aren’t allowed to buy assault rifles in Turkey.

  28. avatar Dave says:

But but but, these types of shootings don’t happen in other countries! I know because Obama said so.

Islam is a religion of peace. If you don’t convert, there will be a piece of you here, a piece of you there, another piece way over that way…

    1. avatar Owen says:

Peace vs piece, that there was funny!

  29. avatar Indiana Tom says:

It’s not known yet if this will be classified as a man-caused disaster or workplace violence. Watch this space.

    2. avatar Ragnar says:

I was there 2 weeks ago and fly through that airport several times a year. Nice airport, great lounges and has more of European feel than a Middle-East vibe.

  32. avatar Troubled Soul says:

What I want to know is, were these guys on the no fly list?
And shouldn’t this be called a “Mass Bombing”?

  33. avatar Adub says:

Turkey buys their oil from Isis and they have been funneling all the Muslims into Europe. I’m having a hard time feeling too sad for them.

  34. avatar Phil says:

We definitely need more Bomb Control Laws… What are we waiting for to ban this weapons of war??

Update from RT: 41 Dead, 239 Injured

  35. avatar jmmy james says:

Was in that airport about 20 years ago. I don’t remember uniformed “soldiers” with AK47’s and HK91’s being at the airport but they were everywhere else we went in Turkey. With all the recent bombings and other attacks in that country, hard to believe these jack wagons were able to pull this off. These f#ckers need to exterminated to the point they are just a footnote in the history books.

  36. avatar Matt in Oklahoma says:

My babies wernt doin nuffin dem racyst turkey 5ohs just came in and shot dem fer no reason. Dey blowed dem up and everyfang. They was jest fixin to take a flight to get der lives back togedder. Dey even shot der dogs fer no reason. Somebody should burn a Turkish drug store down

  37. avatar Chris T from KY says:

    Open borders right?
All humans have a right to travel anywhere right?
It’s all just security theater. A waist of time right?
Trump is a racist because he wants to ban all Muslims from coming here right?

Our real problem is white Christian conservatives who have sex in the missionary position with the lights off.
It’s pay day. Time to buy more ammunition.

  38. avatar Sian says:

Fully expecting Obama to come on TV today and blame the NRA and Americans’ easy access to guns, and also conspicuously avoid mentioning radical islam.

  39. avatar LHW says:

    Ban bombs. FOR THE CHILDREN!

  40. avatar Mikial says:

Muslims killing Muslims. Where’s the news in that?

But I must say, where’s the suicide vest control laws that would have prevented this? Oh . . . wait, you mean they ARE illegal? Wow, how could this happen then?

  41. avatar Anthony says:

    Ban vest and underwear.
