Harry Reid courtesy usatoday.com

The NY Daily News is reporting that Harry Reid, Senate Majority Leader and in charge of setting the agenda in the Senate, will not be putting forward any new gun control measures for the remainder of the 2013 session. Harry made the announcement in front of the Moms Demand Action gun control advocacy group, who were no doubt quite displeased with the news . . .

Joe Biden, along with Pat Toomey and Joe Mancin who pushed their flawed “universal background check” amendment, had been screaming that the other side was softening in their opposition, and were clamoring for a re-do. But, happy Harry throwing in the towel puts the lie to all that. It was yet another effort designed to try to pressure other members of congress to change their votes. And not a single senator who opposed the earlier disarmament efforts has publicly announced a change of heart.

But don’t worry, anti-gunners. Harry says it’s just a temporary setback.

“I think sometime next year we’ll revisit that issue. I’m almost certain of it,” Reid (D-Nev.) told the group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, according to a reporter for The Nation who was allowed to sit in on the meeting.

Right. Because trying to enact gun control legislation in an election year has always been a proven recipe for success.

  1. I like the new look, Robert. It will take getting used to, like anything new-fangled.

  2. Of course they’re backing down… there’s an election next year. They’re going to try and sweep this under the rug and bring it up again if they aren’t voted out.

    • This is why we do not forget who tried to screw us (people of the gun) over. Remember the names, show them that violating/attempting to violate our rights comes with a cost: their job.

    • Yep. If they don’t get burned hard in the elections gun control will be back front and center right after.

    • Yes, this. Same reason to push the employer mandate back.

Too late, I suspect. The stink is on you, Dems. Not going to wash it off that easily.

At least, I sure hope so. After the 2012 election, I think I lack the capacity to be completely shocked.

  3. I have a nice fuzzy feeling after reading that, but I also have a sneaking suspicion IT’S A TRAP!

  4. Good news, however, I certainly don’t trust a pol as far as I can throw Chris Christie. I’m not letting my guard down. Knowing them something will end up attached to some other bill.
And that cover? Wow. No words there

  5. The Pennsylvania Gun Blog has an interesting post suggesting this is a strategic move by Reid to try to protect the vulnerable Dems in 2014, and the vote will be in between the Democratic primaries and the general election. The idea is basically:

    1) He knows this will not pass, but parts of his base really want a vote on this
    2) If the vote is BEFORE the primaries, weak Democrats like Begich in Alaska will be attacked by Bloomberg and the crazies if they vote no. This is bad for them, as it puts pressure on them to vote “yes,” which will kill them in the general election, and maybe cost the dems the seat
    3) If the vote is after the primary but before the general, the weak dems in pro-gun states can vote “no,” and then brag to gun owners about how they “stood up to Obama.”
    4) This timeline also distracts the NRA, GOA and other pro-gun groups from the election because they’ll be fighting background checks at the same time

In other words, the whole vote is an elaborate sham to try to hold on to the Democratic majority in the Senate.

I don’t know whether it’s true or not, but it’s a pretty interesting hypothesis.

    • “suggesting this is a strategic move by Reid to try to protect the vulnerable Dems in 2014”

Anyone remotely informed on politics knew that the second this was announced. Call me a cynic if you want, but I only see this as a move to protect themselves in the 2014 elections.

However, if gun control was as popular as they claim would they need to take it off the table?

    • I am more concerned with Nov 2014 to Jan 2015 during the Lame Duck Session. No one will touch this between the primary’s and the election. The biggest risk is after the election but before the new guys come in.

      Thanks
      Robert

    • (I’m still goin to horde ammo. Sorry about that. Fortunately, I’m married, and my discretionary income truly sucks at this point. Just bought 650 rounds of .22 LR at $.06 / round to replace the 300 rounds of 9mm / .40 / .22 down range)

  6. It makes me happy that it makes them scared of the repercussions, but its too late. We have to keep pushing for our 2nd amendment rights in the states that went full r-tard this year.

  7. During the peak of all the bloody shirt waiving, we frequently heard something along the lines of “if we can save just one life from being taken by gun violence, it’s worth it”. If they really felt that way, I guess they really DON’T give a sh!t about the “victims of gun violence” after all. CONTROL was obviously their motivation and I believe this proves it. It was obviously tougher than they thought so they’ll move on to lower hanging fruit now.

Kudos to Reid for throwing in the towel…even if it’s for the wrong reason.

  8. Too late. I won’t forget and I’ve been waiting to get electoral retribution, I don’t care who I have to vote for to do it.

  9. with obama’s hissy fit after the manchin toomey deal, this doesnt surprise me. they didnt expect such a strong back lash,so theywant everybody to forget about it. bring it up during elections and go from there. or let everybody forget and bringit up AFTER elections when theres umpteen more dems in power.

  10. What is Ole Harry gonna do when Obammy signs the UN Arms Trade Treaty? Just pretend it didn’t happen? I expect The Obamster to sign it on a Friday this month so it doesn’t get a whole lot of publicity while congress is on vacation, but he will sign it. Then all bets are off and guns and ammo will be flying off the shelves again.

  11. Think gun owners are to thank for this after the April vote we stayed there and made sure M.S.T. bill does not come back so its gun owners who did it. Polls sow no support for gun bans ect anymore. So they are waiting for the next really BIG mass shooting to push there gun bans again. Robert Fargo told me this personally its over till another idiot murders again. Be vigilant for our rights still.

  12. Dem playbook to hold the Senate:

    1. No new gun control measures until after the election.
    2. Push back the employer mandate of Obamacare until after the election so that the low intelligence voters won’t lose their jobs until the election is over.
    3. Stir up as much racial sh1t as possible.
    4. Blame everything sucky on George Zimmerman, Edward Snowden and the NRA.

  13. If they couldn’t ram this legislation down our throats after Sandy Hook, they’re hopeless.

  14. Wait and see.Next year mid terms coming up,sounds like political suicide.Be prepared and ready.Keep your powder dry.

  15. Most likely they’re just laying low with prepared legislation to ram through after next mass shooting. After the best time to ram poorly thought laws through is when emotions are riding high.

  16. I’m glad it’s off the table for now, but it’s not going away. These a holes are in for the long game. Whittle us down, one voter at a time. We have to be always vigilant and careful because these anti’s may be flawed in their thinking, but they are not stupid.

  17. and pray tell, are there pictures of Bloomberg’s head exploding upon learning the news? I would pay dearly for that photo

  18. hey brothers; don’t forget that two of duke bloomers hoe’s are on recall in Colorado and if they go down in spite of the duke bloomers money that will be panic with reid and his hoe’s for all to behold and rejoice in it.
and that is in September; which the message to get across to them is; yes we are here and we are not going away and we are coming for ya.

  19. WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER! I’m glad he’s making that public announcement, but I agree with the Admiral Ackbar fans here…be wary of the evil ones…they will continue to sneak around and try to erode our 2A rights any way they can…

  20. I wouldn’t count on Dingy “Hairy” Reid not slipping something in this year. However, I suspect he realizes they need to sand bag it until after Nov 2014. Bloomer did a lot of damage in some states and even old Chuckie Schmukie realized that.

  21. We combined with this guys ended up enjoying the nice principles from your web-site and next all of the sudden got a horrible mistrust I never ever expressed value into the blog owner for all those approaches. My guys been due to this warmed up to see these individuals and now have in place in reality been recently making use of these false claims. We appreciate a person getting only thoughtful also picking such type of amazing subjects many people are genuinely wanting to be informed in. My very own trustworthy regret for not expressing gratitude for your requirements before.
