New Shooting Tournament Aims at Breast Cancer

Shoot Like A Girl is taking aim at breast cancer by announcing a new shooting tournament running until February 2016. All proceeds benefit the National Breast Cancer Foundation, and the organization has already raised more than $40,000 in the last five years. Both archers and firearms shooters can do their part . . .

“We raised $8,317.00 this past year, and have set a new goal of raising $20,000 by adding a Firearms Tournament to our already successful Archery Tournament,” said Karen Butler, the President of Shoot Like a Girl. “Cost for the tournament are kept low due to our great partners, with 100 percent of the profit donated to NBCF for early detection screenings and research to end this horrible disease.”

Partners TRUGLO Inc. and McCarthy Printing were happy to help out. “It is a great honor and privilege to be able to participate with SLG2 in an event that raises money for a cause that has touched the lives of so many people. Everyone knows someone that has experienced breast cancer either directly or indirectly,” stated Lorraine Hellinghausen, TRUGLO Inc. Vice President of Marketing.

Anyone can take part: men, women, and children. There are categories for all ages. Archers can shoot a recurve, traditional, or compound bow, and shooters can use a rifle or handgun. There will be prizes to offer for national winners.

Participants can sign up on the organization’s website, upon which special targets will be mailed to competitors. All ranges who participate will receive a certificate of appreciation.

    In 2015, around 220,800 men are expected to be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and 27,540 men will die from it. An estimated 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women and about 40,290 women will die from it.
    
    In 2009, breast cancer research received $872 in federal funding. Prostate cancer received $390 million.

      It looks like breast cancer and prostate cancer are about equally common, but breast cancer is more often fatal. That’s pretty much what I expected.

      Men are not concerned with their own health. They only care about who is the “Top Shot”. I liked the show I hope it comes back. Raising money is women’s work. Historically women were the ones who started charties usually part of a church or civic organization. A man’s job is killing his target.
      
      It is why women live longer than we do. We all have our roles to play in this world. A charity for the care of the “family jewels” ? When pigs fly!

      Yup, Curtis, and those numbers only count Federal money. On the private side, the amounts for breast cancer vs. prostate cancer are even more skewed.

      Breast cancer also can strike women who are quite young.

    I’ve heard more than one doctor say that if men lived long enough, we’d all get prostate cancer eventually. I’m pretty sure the same is not true for women and breast cancer. Which, btw, affects men as well. But you don’t hear about that. I don’t see ribbons all over cars mentioning awareness for either one (as it pertains to the affected men). Nobody cares. But ask women to pay for their own health insurance and all hell breaks loose.

      A friend of mine in the cancer research field made a much more general statement: We’ll all get cancer if we live long enough.

      True, although my point was that at some point, pretty much all men could potentially be affected by prostate cancer. But not all women would suffer specifically from breast cancer. But you’d never know it, judging by all the walks, donation drives, ribbons etc.

I’m a pretty good shot, but I’m not confident I can just hit the cancer without damaging some of the surrounding tissue.

I’m all for tournaments and raising money to beat cancer though.
