Common sense is pretty common, actually. (courtesy alphadesigner.com)

Proponents of civilian disarmament will stop at nothing to further their anti-gun agenda. If that’s not scary enough—and it is—consider what they do to the English language. “Assault rifles,” “weapons of war (on the streets),” “high-capacity magazines,” “gun safety”—just a few of the terms the antis deploy in their endless crusade against Americans’ gun rights. Over the last couple of years, the anti-gunners have managed to insert the phrase “common sense gun control” into public parlance. The insidious anti-gun agit-prop sends a powerful “turn your brain off” message to the fence-sitters’ subconscious minds. Luckily, the Obama Administration spent part of today degrading the expression. “The White House asserted Sunday that a ‘common-sense test’ rather than ‘irrefutable, beyond-a-reasonable-doubt evidence’ makes the Syrian government responsible for a chemical weapons attack that President Barack Obama says demands a U.S. military response,” chron.com reports. Keep that one going guys. Please.

  3. As soon as I hear the term ” common sense” being spoken by any form of political group anymore my mind just goes numb. It’s either that or hulk out on the nitwits using that term for moronic propaganda…. anyway, I got a chuckle from the map

    • Whenever I hear “common sense” I think “last refuge of a scoundrel.” Common sense means you can’t articulate a succinct, logical, evidence based argument.

      • I enjoy a healthy logic and fact based debate. More so than most of the other people I hang out with. I tend to exhaust their patience while debating. I have had, on more than one occasion, heard someone say “I know I’m wrong, but I feel right”.
        That is exactly what I equate “common sense” arguments with.

Whatever happened to the good old days when an assault rifle was a shoulder fired air cooled gas operated SELECT FIRE ( semi full burts etc.) weapon of intermediate caliber designed for engagements out to 300 meters? Now if its black and holds 30 rounds people soil themselves in fear and God forbid you use hollow points!!

    • In my gunsmithing course ARs and Aks are called modern sporting rifles this assault weapon thing is merely a fear mongering media term invented to catch ratings. How many heard that the mass shooter at Sandy Hook used an m4 before they changed it to pistols with extended magazines?

      • Actually, “assault weapon” was used by manufacturers and sellers as marketing speak before the ban.

        Now we’re stuck with it.

        • Yes and nothing will ever be fun again the constant stigma of taking my assault weapon to the range will just ruin me… btw the assault weapon in question is a mossberg 500 pump with a box magazine feed receiver and a blackhawk stock oh and its black yes people have actually called it an assault weapon.

        • I’ve also noticed in gun catalogs that they have *** HIGH CAPACITY MAGS!!! *** advertised in big flashy letters.

          Maybe we should start emailing them and tell how their marketing gimmicks are damaging our cause by lending legitimacy to these terms.

          Even if “assault weapon,” “high capacity,” and others were in fact invented as marketing gimmicks by gun vendors, the fact is that they are loaded political buzzwords these days. The gun community should avoid legitimizing them, including gun and gun accessory companies.

        • Seems to me that if “assault weapon” was used in advertising first, that is only further proof that it’s a term only fit for propaganda and had no place ins rational discussion on the subject.

        • As an European with a large interest in guns the war of words in the USA seems weird and at times annoying.
          The vast majority of the literature, including American classifies weapons using the same words, so does NATO and even… Wikipedia.
          AR or AK = Assault rifle
          M14, FAL = Battle rifle
          Uzi, MP5 = sub machine gun

          and a pistol is a Bereta M9 , a Glock or my favorite 1911, not some cut down AR or AK because some legal loophole says so.

          An AR has been designed as a weapon of war, not as a ‘modern sporting rifle’, this does not mean I don’t think it could be a fun sporting rifle, it certainly can be, but a potato will still be a potato, even if you use it as a projectile.

          It annoys me when some political non sense makes people do all the verbal ballet we see all the time.
          Convince each other based upon the facts, not by trickery!

    • Hey, if they want to call it an assault weapon, fine…weapon of war, sure. I don’t care if they want to call it my baby extermination stick! As long as we agree that I have a Constitutional Right to possess it, we’re good.

  5. If you listen to some of the talking heads about why we should attack Syria, you will here pro-gun arguments. They are using pro-gun topics for Syria but happily ignore them for the gun control agenda.

  7. The repeated use of the term “common sense” indicates that those flaunting it have none and aren’t about to acquire any. Just another meaningless political term.

Common sense calls for each Syrian freedom fighter who receives a (non military grade) weapon courtesy of US foreign aid to undergo a full background check to make sure they have not been disqualified from firearms ownership. Hopefully none of them have ever committed a crime of domestic violence. Each fully automatic weapon provided must go to the back of the line for an NFA transfer, their local CLEO has to sign the form, and provide fingerprint records. Each explosive round for anything M203 size or larger is a separate destructive device and must also go into the NFA transfer waiting list. We will make sure to cash all their $200 transfer fee checks immediately, though.

    And just to be clear, as a common sense measure, no trusts will be accepted unless each freedom fighter allowed to handle or use trust owned NFA items is thoroughly checked, cleared, and fingerprinted

      • Wouldn’t that be a hoot? A rebel in the midst of a firefight pops off 7 rounds, hears that deafening ‘click’, pulls the mag and sees a sticker of Bloomberg’s smug-ass face on the follower. I can see it now.

    • Here’s a few more…

      Every weapon issued to a freedom fighter will come with a locking device of some kind. As Syria is a more dangerous place than we may be used to, use of the locking device will be mandatory when not actually engaged in combat. The residence of each freedom fighter will be required to have some form of certified gun safe or other secure storage system.

      Freedom fighters planing to move from one district to another must submit proper paperwork to the ATF before moving. Retreating before an attack from an armor brigade is not an acceptable excuse for failure to submit the forms.

      Freedom fighters engaged in actual combat operations with NFA items will be required to keep a copy (recommend it be laminated for durabiity and legibility) of their authorization papers with them. If spot checks during firefights find that said forms are not present with each NFA item, the responsible freedom fighter may face federal charges. “I lost it when I got hit by an artillery strike” is not an acceptable excuse.

  10. Hey Robert, just wondering if you are either a sheepeople, racist, or hypocrite. You have done lots of whining about Obama…we know he is bad. Move on. Now, if you supported Bush and his lies that got us into not 1 not 2 but 3 wars over false WMDs and could not find Osama while his VP shot someone in the face and got away with it and allowed his previous buisness to gain millions if not billions in government contracts but you are against that chemical warfare has been used and nothing should be done. It goes back to my question. Which one are you?

    • If you think the President is bad and constantly doing bad things, how can you move on when he’s still in office, and still doing bad things?

      I seem to recall back when the reasoning for the Iraq war was being laid out, there was a period of UN inspections at various sites in Iraq said to contain either chemical weapons, short range ballistic missiles, and assorted equipment related to each. I also recall, down below the noise of the media soundbytes, information that much of the chemical weapons stockpiles were being moved to… wait for it… Syria. Where the current President says there’s a problem with WMD. But he’s telling the truth. Anything said by anyone else at any time in the past was a lie.

      Now, I would never say out loud in a public forum that the dedicated, well trained, and quick-witted UN inspection teams didn’t do their jobs properly, but when you hear about sattelite imagery showing convoys of tanker trucks moving from suspected WMD storage facilities to the Bekaa Valley, or UN teams at the front door of missile factories being delayed while large, covered but suspiciously missile shaped objects are moved out on flatbed trailers from the back door, I’m sure going to think it real hard.

      I do admire a President who can look at a map of Pakistan and play pin the tail on the donkey and plan a covert mission to get Bin Laden all by himself just through sheer brilliance, instead of giving the go order to an operation that was based on years of intelligence gathering and other covert ops from many different government and military organizations, dating back all the way to… the previous administration.

      I did find the Haliburton and KBR contracts ridiculous, until I realized that the Army had cut all the support units that would have performed those contracted services due to budget cuts. I think this happened under President Clinton. Unfortunately, I think every war in the history of mankind where the politicians promised we’d be “home by Christmas,” or similar, has shown said politicians to be liars… so that a politician caused the military to structure itself accordingly is not a huge surprise.

      I won’t accuse you of being a racist, but your seeming inability to move on from your anger at the previous President while telling RF to move on makes you look suspiciously like a hypocrite.

      Not going to apologize for Cheney’s hunting accident, though. Because I think he already did.

      • I find it horrifying that Assad has missiles that can reach the shores of our fair country! Thanks for the info.

        • Not sure if that was sarcasm or not. Hussein at the time was suspected to have medium range ballistic missiles, nothing big enough to reach the US. Still larger than he was supposed to have, though, and the intel said he was trying to make more. I think this was a large part of the reason for the inspections. It’s been several years, obviously. I don’t remember all the details.

          Assad is not suspected, as far as I know, of having serious medium or long range ballistic missiles. I don’t recall any word of Hussein’s missiles being transferred, just the chemical weapons. None of this was substantiated, probably because nobody wanted to tangle with Assad’s air defenses.

          • Well. Then. How is this any of the Unites States’ concern? Has he threatened our shores? Sworn to obliterate Washington, DC? New York? Perish the thought.

            As for this so-called “gas attack”, a week ago, approximately. one of the “rebel” (al-Queda) leaders admitted to press that they released the gas, not Assad, and said it was an “accident”.

            You could search the term, “rebel leader admits Syrian gas attack”, but you’re more comfortable thinking I’m a crackpot. Military leaders stateside who’ve been blessed with a peek at Obama’s evidence said there is nothing of substance in the report.

            It’s gratifying indeed to see you’re capable of believing Obama instead of me. Have some more Kool-Aid. A long draught.

        • Ahh, sorry. I guess I let my irritation at the poorly worded attack on RF get the better of me.

          I don’t support any kind of attack on Syria. I don’t believe he is a direct or indirect threat to the US or to any government friendly to us besides Israel, and I think they are well able to handle themselves.

          What I was trying to do is show that it’s stupid to be angry and accuse Bush of being a liar regarding chemical weapons existing in Iraq to start a war, when much of the intel supporting Assad having/using chemical weapons has got to be from the same sources. Stupid, especially when shawn appeared to be angry with RF for not supporting an attack on Syria justified by chemical weapons.

          I also believe the situation on the ground in Syria to be so chaotic that what intel we have today is likely to be worse in quality than what we had in Iraq. And with several of the rebel factions being either linked to Al Qaeda or using the same tactics and under the same ideology, I have no problem believing the rebels were the ones to use WMD. In fact, I actually thought that to be the case when I first heard it days ago- why would Assad do the one thing that might provoke us into an attack, however poorly justified?

          And I will go a step further. It’s ridiculous in the extreme to talk about toppling a foreign government, no matter how evil, in favor of a bunch of Al Qaeda linked, West hating, Muslim terrorists, especially when our theatrical outrage was nowhere to be seen during the months he was busy killing civillians by the thousands and ten thousands with conventional weapons. Gas, bullet, bomb, rocket, bayonet, what makes one more evil than the other when it is used to kill non combatants? To kill women? Children? Even then, I would not want us to attack them. It’s a civil war, and there is evil on both sides in probably equal measure.

          This is a farce. In every way imaginable. WB, I don’t think we disagree as much as you think we do. Sorry for giving that impression.

          • I agree. We don’t disagree on a lot of things. I was just reacting to attempt to sell the American people a used car and pitch it as a new one.

        • Also to show it’s stupid to give the current President credit for one covert ops mission and therefore all the credit for ‘getting Bin Laden,’ as though the previous President had single handedly been responsible for each failed day before that when we didn’t get him. I mean, it’s as single minded an approach as assuming the Emipire to be defeated just because the Death Star blew up.

    • I always enjoy that whenever RF mentions Obama, Shawn will show up, constant as the sunrise, to blame it all on Bush.

  14. I saw this story a day or so ago. The logic that a ‘common sense’ test would hold Assad directly responsible for the chemical weapons attacks led me to wonder the following question. By this ‘common sense’ logic, shouldn’t Obama be held directly responsible for Fast & Furious, Bengazi, domestic spying, etc., etc. ? Seems he of all people should be careful of the type of tests he uses before assigning blame.

  17. Technically, only the southern tip of Florida is “Cuba Libre”, the rest of the state is either the part you visit to go to Disney World or the part you really hate driving through if you live in South Florida and you’re on a road trip.

  19. A real “common-sense test” would implicate the rebels for a chemical attack. Fortunately we don’t have to rely on that test, because there happens to be a fair amount evidence that it was the rebels.

    Honestly, the White House sales pitch for Syrian intervention on behalf of the rebels is the single most egregiously disgusting act hypocrisy and duplicity I have witnessed in my adult life.

      The best being an outright admission by a “rebel” leader. He said they weren’t taught how to handle sarin properly, and that it was an “accident”; that part is a lie, I’m pretty sure.
