Weekend Digest: As Good As It Gets Edition

A rather daring and unusual string of robberies took place at three gun sellers in Mississippi last Friday night. A man (not shown) rammed his truck through the front door of Cook’s Gun Shop in D’Iberville (De-eye-berville), smashed several display cases and grabbed up several handguns. Minutes earlier, the man tried the same tactics at pawn shops in Gautier (Go-shay) and Ocean Springs (Oh-shun Springs). He got away with several guns in Gautier, but was unsuccessful making it inside the Ocean Springs store. One source told reporters that as many as 20 guns are now in criminal circulation. Click here to see the video, and note the guy’s not dumb; he used the back end of his truck. . .

A challenger for U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham’s (R-SC) seat is going to use a gun to try to get it. State Sen. Lee Bright of Spartanburg will be raffling off an AR-15 in a drawing set for February 15th. Entries are free, but require entrants to provide their name, phone number, and email address as 2A-supportive voters. Bright said the giveaway is to raise awareness that “we are more pro-gun than Lindsey Graham.” (In my opinion, not a terribly high bar to step over.) The gun comes from Palmetto State Armory, and will be paid for with campaign cash. I assume you have to be a SC resident to win, but if you want to try your hand, go here.

AM-TAC Precision introduced their new .416 Hushpuppy round at SHOT this year, with the concept of having a suppressed round with a maximum point blank range of 200 yards on a man-sized target, and creating a wound channel larger than a 12 gauge buck or slug due to the yawing characteristics of the bullet when it encounters a soft target. The Firearm Blog has details and pictures on this stubby little round. It’s comical looking. Whether or not it’s effective, I guess we’ll have to find out.

SilencerCo goes night-vision hog hunting with their new Saker 762. The more videos I watch, the more I want one, which I suppose is the point.

The Washington Secretary of State’s office has officially certified one gun-related initiative to the Legislature, and is starting the review of a second. The certified measure, Initiative 594, would require universal background checks on all firearm sales in Washington. The second initiative now being certified, Initiative 591, would prevent Washington state from adopting background-check laws stricter than the national standard, which requires the checks for sales by licensed dealers but not for purchases from private sellers. It would also prohibit confiscation of firearms without due process. If you’re thinking those two are diametrically opposite, you wouldn’t be wrong. If the legislature takes no action, both proposals will be on the ballot in November for the voters to decide. I wonder what happens if they both pass…

Jerry Miculek hauls a S&W .500 Magnum out to the range, and rips off five shots in 1.14 seconds. My hand hurts just thinking about it.

  1. After far too many colonial wars and two World Wars, the best of the Brits did not survive to propagate the species. Modern England is what you get when your gene pool is like a fetid Louisiana swamp.

  2. …but, but there are LAWS against this guy possessing firearms! He broke into a store, how did he pass the NICS check?!? Doesn’t he know what the LAWS are? Oh, you silly criminal, not following the LAWS!!!

  3. From the video it appears that the bad guys used classic “coyote” tactics. One guy distracts the target and draws his attention while the second guy makes the attack. The tactical lesson here pay attention and protect your rear and flanks.

A couple of years ago I was out walking my dogs and got approached by two surly looking guys who “wanted to know if I had a cellphone charger” I kept the dogs between me and them and did a quick look around to make sure there wasn’t a third guy lurking behind me. I kept my face towards them and walked backwards. I’d like to say that I was ready to pull my gun but to be honest between controlling the dogs and keeping aware my gun handling skills were definitely impaired.. The dogs weren’t belligerent but I could tell that the potential perps were intimated by them and kept their distance.. I don’t know if the dogs saved me or the two guys were just goof offs.

    • I do what I can. Glad it helped.

I didn’t know how to pronounce the first two, and it didn’t seem fair to leave Ocean Springs out of the fun just because they have a pedestrian name. And it made me laugh to write it.

  4. I just saw a guy using these on a Youtube review and he was successfully using them for 5.45×39. He was loading them to 33 rounds and claims they have been cycling well. He also takes them apart. The video to search for if interested is MWG IK 520 40 Round AR 15 Magazine In 5.45×39 Reliability Test & Review (HD)

I have read lots of mixed things about the C Defense Mags and I’m looking for an alternative. If these work well for 5.45×39 AND 5.56/223 then that makes these have even more appeal to me since I can use them in.

Here’s a quote from their site on the product description page: “Designed by renowned development engineer Ivan Kolev, designer of the Bulgarian high capacity polymer AK Magazine.”

Scotch00 also has a good review of them on Youtube.

  5. “ropingdown says:

And: What is it with the shotguns? Is it the new AR? CO, Navy Yard, MD…”

I have a thought on this. Shotguns are cheaper than ARs, and to new or untrained shooters seem easier to use. In the case of CO and MD, these seem to be more spur of the moment crimes. In DC, the murderer tested an AR, but bought the shotgun. He’s dead, so we won’t know why, but easier and cheaper seem reasonable. In CO, the kid bought a shotgun. Could have bought an AR, but for whatever reason, he didn’t. (I’m thinking, HS kid, no money, shotty’s cheaper.) In this case, we’ll either find out the guy has had this shotgun in his closet for years, or he bought it that morning. He wasn’t going on a spree killing, (probably) he was getting revenge for being cheated on. (again, probably.)

And BTW, can we, the PotG, please stop referring to murderers who use guns as ‘shooters?’ They’re MURDERERS. We don’t call murderers who use knives ‘stabbers.’ Let’s stop buying into the terminology of the anti-s. I own a shotgun, and I like to shoot it. I’M a shooter. YOU are shooters. People who use guns to murder lots of people are murderers. And assholes.

  6. It’s not just the fast shooting. Its not even that he did it double action and kept them all on target. It’s the chuckle at the end. His forearms must be made of steel.

  7. I just purchased one of these and spent the first day at the range. Used cbc ball 7.62×51 to break it in and then moved to other 7.62×51 and .308 factory loads to test it out. I used a Zeiss Conquest scope and nikon M-223 mount. I found that SSA 168, and 175 gr ammo both yielded consistent 1.5″-1.75″ groups. The federal gold metal match 168 Sierra match kings a solid 1.5″ as well. Finally Hornady superformance 165 gmx did a 2″ group. What I truly love is that the rifle ran every shot perfectly and is VERY clean after all these rounds. I’m shocked how well it shoots and it’s and absolute pleasure maybe aside from it being a tank.

Also wanted to add that it likes to be fouled. Took about 20 rounds after cleaning for it to settle down. And monarch 150 gr SP (read cheap) will still put down 2.5″ groups which is fine hunting (around here) accuracy out to 200 yds. All my groups are 100 yds.

  8. The fact that citizens are not protesting the arrest of this business owners says that they have lost their balls and that the government has become a kleptocracy.

  9. I was wondering when the stolen guns were going to grace the digest. Such a shame they successfully stole from Cooks. Cooks has a very good staff with a decent inventory. The one in Ocean Springs…..not so much.

  10. Those Europeans sure are sophisticated, I thought a criminal was like…a no good pos. Now I find out that you must have tea & crumpets awaiting for these most valuable members of society. Jolly old England, where steak knives aren’t just for dinner anymore, Randy

  11. “…Mr. Woodhouse forgot to STFU when the Old Bill arrived. “I swung out like a mad man between six and ten times. I was just lashing out man, I was hitting as hard as I could.””

That’s just asinine police work. Or the cops are outright anti-self defense. There’s no reason that bit of nervous rambling had to go in the report. If it’s obviously a good shoot, or good fence posting as it were, a good cop would have no problem reminding an individual “You know, you do have the right to remain SILENT. You can WAIT ON YOUR ATTORNEY. ANYTHING YOU SAY can be used in court…”

  12. Why isn’t the gun-grabbing community seeking to ban all Nissan Titans? I mean, that vehicle was used to commit a crime that resulted in guns being stolen. Possibly those guns could be used in nefarious activities, like redistribution.

  13. Mr Woodhouse will most certainly be robbed again in court as the criminals sue him for injuries and damages. They they will have a landscaping business they can use to better themselves. Perhaps using it to rob people by pretending to be employed as landscapers.

  14. If you live in a state with 10 round limit then why not g26.One of the best shooting guns. Not limited? g19 all day . And the new g30s is even more similar to the 19 but is harder to shoot than the 30sf because of the lighter slide. Now glock has a 380 called 42 and I held it and loved it. They are all better than not carrying a gun.

  15. I have owned a stainless SA 1911-A1 since 1994 and it has been my favorite pistol. Only a few upgrades- trigger, grips, and wilson combat magazines. I did have the feed ramp polished when I bought it at the recommendation of the gunsmith. It feeds anything, is tight and extremely reliably. It is my most accurate pistol and after 20 plus years I am pretty darn happy with it. I do own a 228 Sig, 380 Bersa, Ruger SR 1911 (recent purchase and awesome) and a SW sigma which I fixed. So- I would buy another SA 1911 in a heartbeat if I needed one.

  16. Very Interesting. Eugene was almost a child prodigy with midrange computers in the 80’s. He and his father had a software company called VESOFT. It was software for HP/3000 midrange computers. I attended seminars where he and his father spoke.
