A suspect has been arrested in the death of a Kentucky man who was fatally shot amid a protest in Louisville over the killing of Breonna Taylor, police said Sunday.

The suspect was hospitalized and being interviewed by homicide investigators, interim Louisville Police Chief Robert Schroeder said at a news conference. The person’s name was not immediately released.

Police were conferring with prosecutors on criminal charges to be filed, Schroeder said

Tyler Charles Gerth, 27, of Louisville, died after being shot at Jefferson Square Park in downtown Louisville, authorities said.

In a video of the shooting shown during the news conference, the suspect was surrounded by several people before shots were fired and people scrambled for cover. Schroeder said the suspect had been participating in the protests since they began and had been arrested a few times.

“He had been repeatedly asked by other members at the park to leave due to his destructive behavior,” Schroeder said.

Another video posted on social media later showed at least one person bleeding profusely on the ground.

The shooting was at least the second during nearly a month of protests in Louisville over Taylor’s death. Seven people were wounded May 28 when gunfire erupted near City Hall, prompting Taylor’s mother to issue a statement asking people to demand justice “without hurting each other.”

Taylor, a 26-year-old Black woman, was killed in her Louisville home in March by police who were serving a no-knock warrant. Protesters have been calling for the officers involved in her death to be charged. One of the officers was recently fired.

Several dozen people gathered Sunday at the park. A few Louisville police officers arrived to hand out flyers that said overnight camping and cooking were banned at the site, but protesters would be allowed to continue gathering during the day. Police removed tents from the site and told protesters they could pick them up at a separate location.

John Kriner knelt for nearly 30 minutes at the site to pray for peace. He said it was his first visit.

“I just want there to be peace and calm,” Kriner said.

For weeks, the park has been the epicenter for protests in Louisville after the police killings of Taylor and George Floyd, who died last month at the hands of Minneapolis police.

Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, was originally charged with attempted murder after he fired a shot at one of the officers who came into the home. Walker has said he thought he was defending from an intruder.

The no-knock search warrant that allows police to enter without first announcing their presence was recently banned by Louisville’s Metro Council.

      • I dunno, the new law here seems like a mixed bag.

        It ends qualified immunity, at the state level, for local and county officers but not the state and in so.e circumstances makes them personally liable for the violations, up to 5% or $25,000 whichever is less.

        OTOH it sets up some hard rules that I think will make policing harder based on the definitions and how the courts parse them. A ban on lethal force for non-violent crimes sounds good on paper but in practice could become a mess.

          Written specifically to allow citizens redress for violations of the constitutional rights.

          Qualified immunity makes that section of law moot.

          Even if the cop knows full well that they are violating your rights, they need just claim that they “believed” what the did was legal. Ignorance of the law IS AN ACCEPTABLE DEFENSE if you are a cop.

          QI is ultimately a product of the Warren Court decisions. Prior to the 1960s cops didn’t need qualified immunity because they did things like beat confessions out of people with no repercussions. If you are under 60, you have no idea what the police got away with.

    • They knocked at Taylor’s residence. It eas a joint warrant. They no knocked the stash house and nobody died.

      • Can you prove they made anything resembling an adequate attempt to awaken the people in the residence? The survivor was shocked awake by the door crashing in. Taylor was killed by gunshots fired from outside and thru a covered window. The suspect they were after turned out to be in custody already.

        The degree of incompetence and careless disregard for the safety of citizens is enormous.

        • She was a named party on the warrant. Her current boyfriend admits firing the first shot. So the cops shot back. He claims he thought it was a home invasion. Why would he think someone would invade her dwelling? He knew her ex was a drug dealer and I can see him thinking, “yeah right the police. Not going to believe that.

When they make it personal, I get relentless.       • No-knocks are wrong, wrong, wrong. If you want 1 person, or 9 people from that address, you put them under surveillance, and pick them off, one at a time. When there is nobody left, you move in and serve the warrant, in a respectful manner, so as to preserve both life and evidence.

        No-knocks are a big part of the reason we are seeing an uprising in the ghettos. They’re tired of the utter disrespect for life. Can’t say that I blame them.       • The “joint warrant” thing doesn’t excuse the raid because it’s precisely the heart of the problem. They had good evidence the primary location was a drug house. Then they glommed Breonna Taylor’s home onto the same warrant for no other reason than that she had visited that house on a several occasions. That should never have flown. Sure, someone visiting a known drug dealer could have been a criminal associate. But drug dealers have family and friends outside the drug business, and they offered no evidence she was involved in that side of his life, let alone that she was so especially dangerous that it would be safer to bash down her door under cover of darkness.

  13. The video was confusing. It looked as if one guy walking towards the shooter in the very beginning may have had a gun- if so, he fled and didn’t use it. Later on a few protesters(??) with ARs show up around the guy bleeding out. Did they shoot the perp? Apparently someone did.

    Lot of shots fired for very few deaths. Good thing the shooter- who would have been called a protestor as late as a few hours before the shooting- either wasn’t accurate or only had beef with that one guy.

    • I normally jump to conclusions but sometimes there are genuine glitches. I have had innocuous postings not appear. But I have my suspicions.

      • Either way I really miss the ability to edit my posts. Seems my phone autoincorrects things after I’ve typed them and moved on. It’s really weird.

        • I need an edit function for both autocorrect and my habit of my brain moving faster than my fingers. It takes multiple edits to get it right.

        • Click “Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.” and you get five minutes to edit your comments.

          As for the comments section, its hit and miss. I find comments “glitch” and never even go to the moderation bin. Its been happening more often but C&P to your computer clipboard is an easy work around right now. It’s easy to spot because there is usually a delay when “post comment” is hit, when there is no delay, the comment needs to be posted again.

    • We have never been monetized by Google. They don’t monetize gun-related sites.

      The WordPress comment system is its own mystery. We have certain obvious words that cause a post to hang up for moderation, but very few. Beyond that, sometimes it pends comments for no apparent reason.

    • “cleaning up” aka censoring the comments section doesn’t eliminate what people feel and think, it does drip gasoline on the fire though, one person at a time.

      It’s normal site function for that you describe, usually replies to a deleted comment are also deleted. Some comments seem to be flagged with all responses going into a moderation bin, and some users seem to be restricted from posting to certain articles. I have put comments on different articles from the same author just to test that aspect but it doesn’t seem to apply.

      Hard to know how the back end operates, it can only be speculated at from the behavior of the front end.

        • Yeah, always heard the old saw “You could be just 2 paychecks away for being homeless” and never considered it could be me. WRONG! Although the decent into homelessness took 15 years and a handful of bad breaks one after another, starting with a serious back injury at work in 2000. Probably could have fought to get disability but that was not in my nature. I knew I was still able to do something to carry my own weight, so I did. I pushed on, took a 60% cut in pay, needed an emergency appendectomy (with no health insurance) to the tune of $23,000, credit shot, car wreck and finally employer(who knew 9 months in advance but hid the truth from me) restructured pay scale cutting my annual income from 22k to 9.6k with just 4 weeks notice. I had no choice, business expenses (7 day/week newspaper motor route) roughly equaled 70% total income, I had to quit. Evicted and living in my vehicle with my 2 dogs for the next 19 months. Found part time work right away but stayed homeless mostly due to bad credit and eviction (disqualifying at most all rental properties). Took a solid year + to get a section 8 housing voucher. I continue to struggle both physically and financially but preserver none the less. I’ve made mistakes along the way, but I own them. The fickle finger of fate and my own choices got me where I am today. I accept responsibility for my situation, But I will be damned if I’ll take the blame for anyone else’s.

        • Also, since we are talking about the shirt, got mine 2 years after getting out of the Army. Drugs were a factor for me. Got low, etc etc… Woe is me, pity for the helpless and family finally had enough of my shit, gave me some tough love, helped me clean up and get VA assistance. I filed for PTSD last december and I just had my first check this month. With back pay. I never wanted to, but through the “counseling” (Really just documenting for my claim) and words from my family they encouraged me to b/c it would help me from going back to where I was, twice since 2012. Another thing that saved me, and I have been vocal about here, is guns! Crazy right? A family member that I was staying with at the time of my recovery was all about guns and it’s how I got into all the stuff I am in now. Literally saved my life and gave me a reason to fight. Now the government funds my boog shit, and I have obtained quite a few things in just 4 years. Overdrive now. Better late than never.

          Obviously, would be harder for non veterans especially homeless without a residence to get assistance, but there are ways, and just because it’s hard does not mean it cannot be done. You have to help yourself. Most homeless people don’t want to do that. I know I didn’t. Sometimes it takes a swift kick in the ass.

        • In the state of CA, my home for the time, you cannot buy a firearm without proof of residence. And not just a DL. You have to have something else with the same address on it. Utility bill, vehicle registration, etc.

        20 year white kid coming home from work was shot and killed in a robbery in decent neighborhood. How would peace officer prevent or respond to such an event?

        • A hypothetical? What does race have to do with this or are you baiting, disregard, I already know you are troll baiting.

          I can’t know another person’s mind and neither can you, but the behavior I expect from a peace officer would be to immediately stop the threat if the crime is occurring in the presence of the officer. Robbery is an inherently violent crime and its fairly difficult to rob someone without the use of force. Pickpockets need not apply. With regular patrols and the application of force, word will quickly spread throughout the dregs in the uncivilized parts of the city that certain neighborhoods are off limits.

          I have family in Houston that lives in an up class neighborhood and it’s still fairly nice while the surrounding city is going to ****. The community has at least one constable patrolling at all times and the crime is low within the community despite being surrounded by a deteriorating city and being without walls.

          If the crime has already occurred, there isn’t much that can be done but pick up the pieces and put out a BOLO. Hopefully the peace officers nail the offender before he commits another crime. Maybe if we started executing them more and releasing them less, we wouldn’t have people going in and out of the justice system 20, 100 times, only to come out and continue to commit crimes.

          How much surveillance you want in your community, electronic or otherwise, and how many constables you want to fund, if you want a wall, etc, will play a role in how effective the peace officers are. Their effectiveness depends on having supporting elements or they will be handicapped.

        • Well I do own a Winchester Model 1894 produced in 1906 passed down from my great grandfather. As to if it would take a buck at 1000 yards with iron sights well i don’t have an overly narcissistic open of my marksmanship so I wouldn’t take a shot like that and risk an just wounding of an animal for it to run off and die someplace. On the other hand even at my decrepit age I still have the field craft to stalk a deer to a realistic range.

  22. The civil unrest in Louisville is derived from an absence of trust, which is derived from a consistent absence of truth. The void left by a lack of truth is immediately occupied by guesses, conjecture, and wild hypothesis that are only limited by imagination.

    Until the truth is told on a consistent basis, trust can never be established, and our society will further devolve into unwarranted violent actions/responses. At this point, our logical recourse is to pursue the truth and reject the temptation to let our imaginations run wild.

    If we can’t find the strength to pursue, to demand the truth; then we will live an existence more desperate than we are able to conceive. We are at a tipping point.
