Third Shooting in the Last Four Days in Seattle’s CHOP Zone, Police Want Back In East Precinct

From the AP:

Seattle police are investigating another shooting that happened near the city’s “occupied” protest zone.

The shooting of the man in his 30s happened around 5 a.m. Tuesday in the Capitol Hill neighborhood east of downtown. A spokesperson at Harborview Medical Center said the man’s wounds were not life-threatening.

It was the third recent shooting near the “Capitol Hill Occupied Protest.” One man was killed in a weekend shooting.

Of the Tuesday morning incident Seattle police said “the victim refused to provide any information about the circumstances surrounding the shooting or a suspect description.”

Police said there were additional reports of shots fired in the area around the same time but there were no reports of additional victims.

Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan said Monday the city will move to wind down the protest zone following the shootings.

The mayor said the violence was distracting from changes sought by thousands of peaceful protesters opposing racial inequity and police brutality.

Durkan also said police will soon return to a police station that the department largely abandoned in the area after clashes with protesters following George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police.

The city is trying to work out a way to re-take the “autonomous zone” and get police officers back inside the East Precinct which they abandoned during the rioting. The building is now inside the CHOP zone.

As for what’s been going on in the cop-free area, Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best told that things aren’t pretty in there since the cops abandoned their local base of operations.

The chief said several criminal acts have been reported in the days since her officers left the precinct building. She said the incidents included shootings, rape, assaults, burglary and property destruction.

“I’m not making this up,” Best said. “These things happened. Our officers need to get back into the East Precinct.”

Do tell.

Is that uniformed person to the right (the photo viewer’s right) side of Seattle’s Mayoress Durka-derp holding his own coffee as they traverse the abused streets, or is he holding it for Ms. Durka-derp while she reaches forward to grabs someone’s rights from them?

Regardless of whose coffee he is carrying, the uniformed cop is damn lucky to have the mayor there to protect him. Judging by the lettuce on his cap and the stars on his collar, I doubt he’d be of much use if things went sideways.

    2. avatar Leroy Jenkins says:

Near CHOP/CHAZ is not in CHOP/CHAZ.

Capitol Hill has a few shootings a month on average. So this isn’t out of the ordinary, and also where it happened, police could were nearby, but it was Seattle Fire and Rescue that was dispatched, and took him to the hospital.

As far as I can tell from the news reports, the first shooting in the CHOP/CHAZ was also not in the CHOP/CHAZ, and the police response, like almost all cases, was after the fact, after the victims in that case were already in the hospital.

      1. avatar Mike H in WA says:

I’m a photojournalist in the local media… the first two shootings did happen inside the CHOP. People keep saying CHOP is “six city blocks”, but that’s not accurate. It also includes Cal Anderson park… first the southern half, then slowly the entirety of it. The first shooting happened in the southern half of the park in the playfields where protestors have set up their tents. According to one of the organizers that my reporter and I interviewed Sunday, some yahoos were setting off fireworks under the trees there, and the 19 y/o victim went to tell them to knock it off because it’s dangerous, and a scuffle broke because (SHOCK!) the protestors don’t like being told what to do.

This latest one (the third) happened at 11th and Denny… that’s the northeast corner of the park (which is part of CHOP), in an entirely residential area of the neighborhood. Specifically it happened across the street from the park. So no, it didn’t happen inside of CHOP, but that’s sort of splitting hairs… it happened 15 feet from CHOP.

Capitol Hill has a couple of incidents a month… but Capitol Hill is a huge area. This many shooting in this tiny of an area in this short a time is unheard of.

It’s almost as if all the reporters stayed right next to the police lines and faked everything else.

  6. avatar Scott says:

This should have been stopped long ago. These protesters are like kids throwing a tantrum to get something they want. The cops are gonna have a very hard time with this and I wish them luck. 11. avatar Chris T in KY says:

The Seattle police should get really, really, sick. They need to stay home and take care of their health.
It is NOT HEALTHY for a Seattle cop to enter the CHAZ. Especially when the communist city government does not support the police department.

No officer owes his or her life to protecting civilians who hate them and want the police abolished.
And the majority white residents of the CHAZ have adopted the same mentally of many inner-city blacks.
    “A no snitch policy.”

They Refuse to cooperate with the police. If you don’t cooperate, then you have no Rule of Law.
Because civilians must participate in it. A social contract that everybody agrees to. Whether or not they say so publicly or not. But now they refused to cooperate and participate. So now you they have the CHAZ.

Don’t help them. It’s a state issue only. Trump is very smart. I hope he keeps this a state issue. No federal intervention.

    1. avatar Chief Censor says:

Maybe because they shot at someone and ended up getting shot in the arm? Maybe some of that was caught on video and they tried to delete that stream/evidence?

The police chief is a liar. She is power hungry and wants back in her first police department. She also wants to be able to use any force necessary to do it regardless of the results. She is angry that she can’t do what she wants. She is mad at the mayor and the judge that is restricting her powers.

The story the police put out about the first shooting was lies. Their body cams show the truth. And there are obviously more live streams to prove what is true and what was lies. That police department has no trust because they haven’t earned it.

Apparently the two people trying to cover up the crimes out there go by the names James Madison and Oscar Freeman. I first I thought Oscar was Raz. Oscar is very aggressive at intimidating people and using physical force to stop them from recording CHOP. Raz has returned after the fourth shooting during the night, he wants to maintain CHOP and setup some kind of leadership, but he doesn’t want to be a leader.

Will the mayor, city council and police chief be on the front lines? Or will they send the police that they wouldn’t let hold it? Will they insist that the cops not wear helmets or have shields with them because it looks scary?

If that’s what it comes to, Seattle PD needs to mutiny.

      Actual reality:
NASCAR and the DOJ investigated the incident, finding on Tuesday that no federal crime was committed. According to authorities, the rope had already been hanging in the garage as early as October 2019 (it wasn’t a noose).

“It’s an ambush. I have no other way to describe it. When there are that many people out there and clearly no one had been shot. It was just a setup to get the cops there,” Dugan said

  32. avatar Montana Actual says:

Of course the victim says he was shot by racists. He straight up said in an interview “I;m not sure if they were proud boys, or KKK…”

Yeah, okay. At this point, the amount of people who give a fuck or believe you in the first place has fallen to an all time low. I am 100% convinced it was gang related and their false sense of OMERTA to their sets will allow them the opportunity to blame anyone white. I personally will never believe a word from these racists, and am struggling to find common ground with any person in America who supports even a single shred of this crap. It could have actually been some redneck KKK member who infiltrated chop (by infiltrated I mean walking casually) and I’d still lean towards defending that group of idiots over the inhabitants of the zone, for principal.

No police officer should face politically sanctioned lawlessness and violence.

Why are the police asking for permission to restore order? Why are they waiting to take back their police station? Didn’t they take an oath to enforce the law and serve and protect their citizens? All you see is the police wailing like a baby blaming the mayor because she can’t go into the CHOP zone. Wow, what a bunch of neutered city officials including the cops.

No Jail time? No fine? Bring out a paddle, two or three wacks by court order. Didn’t get it as kids, correct bad behavior now.
