It’s hard to believe, but the Gun Owners of America (GOA) have staked out a position further to the right than the National Rifle Association (NRA). Whereas the NRA will endorse (if not financially support) Democratic politicians whose election will further the NRA’s goals, the GOA is all republican (a.k.a. conservative) all the time. And how. “Gun Owners of America has two major goals in 2012,” their press release announces. “First — make Barack Obama a one-term President. Second — make Harry Reid the minority leader in the Senate.” B-b-b-ut what if Obama’s challenger has a strident anti-gun rights agenda? Someone like . . .

Gun crime. Gun crime. How do we stop gun crime? Hmm . . . I know! How about we mandate that all guns come equipped with a firing pin that stamps the weapon’s serial number on the cartridge—every time it fires! That way, if anyone commits a crime with the gun, all the police have to do is collect the casings, read the numbers, check their records and see that the gun was stolen from someone at some point. How great is that? If a criminal dares to file down the firing pin, we’ll charge them with weapons’ tampering, just like we do now! OK, that’ll be $30 million dollars please. Illinois Launches Pre-McDonald Gun Control Bill Blitz

Sometime this summer, The U.S. Supreme Court will strike down Chicago’s handgun ban. While the Highest Court in the Land’s™ ruling on the McDonald v. Chicago case will likely leave a bit of wiggle room for state and local firearms restrictions, The Windy City’s gun control laws will have the wind knocked out of their sails (leading to lots of gun sales). In the run up to that event, prior to the legislature’s May 7th HFTH (Head For The Hills) deadline, the Illinois state legislature is trying to ram through as much gun control legislation as it can. To wit (provided and summarized by the duh duh DUH National Rifle Association):

House Bill 180, introduced by State Representative Deborah Graham (D-78), would establish a state-based licensing scheme for Federal Firearms License (FFL) holders that sell handguns.

Mayor Daley’s Gun Control Proposals Unleash Quote Wars

Every year, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley holds a press conference on gun crime, wherein Hizzoner proposes some initiative or another for reducing illegal guns/gun crimes. Every single time, he trots out a victim of same to justify a legislative agenda that impinges on the rights of non-criminal gun owners. This year Dick wants to turn “knowingly sell or transfer a gun to a known gang member” into a Class 1 felony and mandatory “micro-stamping” (to link handguns and bullets in CSI heaven). Whether or not that’s a good thing depends on your stance on gun control. But this time out, Daley’s lost the big ‘mo. He’s looking down the barrel of a Supreme Court ruling which could strike down Chicago’s gun ban—and any other plans he might have in that regard. Still, they don’t call it “the windy city” for nothing. All sides of the debate are ready, willing and able to provide sound byte nation with a brief blast of hot air. As are we, courtesy The Sun Times. Todd Vandermyde, the National Rifle Association’s Illinois legislative liaison gets his quote on. “I’m quite used to the mayor using the Second Amendment as toilet paper. But, now they want to use the First Amendment as a doormat and the due process guarantees of the 14th Amendment as a dishrag.” As Mr. Bumble would say, MORE?
